  • From rags to riches selling cod oil?

Just a small rant before I get to my question. I find the four word search restriction on most message boards very frustrating. I couldn’t search for Cod Oil because both words are less than four letters long. *sigh* Oh well, I did do a search for Cobalt and I didn’t find what I was looking for. So hopefully I’m not duplicating a huge thread someplace.

I’ve read references to selling cod and/or cod oil in the bazaar for “big bucks” on several message boards. I understand the concept of selling trade supplies to players with more money than time. I wish I were one of them. However, I can’t help but question what I’ve read. First of all, as far as I can tell cod oil is only used for Arctic Wyvern tailoring. That in itself is a fairly small market I would think. Unless of course it’s a major skill up path. I’ve not taken tailoring far enough to know for sure. I would also expect that many such tailors are druids with easy access to Cobalt Scar. That would seem to further reduce the market. Also, the trivial for making cod oil is very low, only 68. A player could gain 68 brewing skill in an hour or less with nothing more than fishing grubs and water. According to some of the posts I’ve read cod oil sells for about 100pp each. Is this truly the case?

I did a search on my server this morning before leaving for work. There were no Cobalt Cod for sale and only one vendor was selling cod oil. He had about seven for 150pp each. Unfortunately I don’t know if he sold fifty of them an hour earlier at that price or if those seven have been sitting on his vendor for the last two months. Has anyone here had experience buying or selling cod oil?

    1) yes - Arctic Wyvern is a skill path - especially for those without Luclin.
    2) yes - while druids have easy access - but theres the issue of factions. After all, if you start hunting the Arctic Wyvern, its a bit riskier to travel here to fish. And we all know just how reliable that low-level invis is.
    3) yes - the brewing trival is in fact low and really doesnt have any factor on this discussion.
    4) TIME is the major factor. It will take about an hour or non-stop fishing to catch a stack of Cobolt Cod. And assuming you're a reasonable brewer - this will make 18 or 19 cod oil. An hour fishing can be mighty boring.

So when all is said and done, dont be shocked now, YES - Cod Oil is priced that high by alot of players. Howver, what you're seeing in the bazaar is the upper limit that WONT sell. Thats the guy selling to the truely desperate. If you priced your Cod Oil at a reasonable price, it will sell reasonably fast.

If you want a definative answer, go fish some Cod, make the Oil and put one for sale at a low price. when you sell that one, raize the price 10p. Eventually, you sales will slow down and you'll know the upper limit of what your server will tolerate.

There is no faction hit for hunting the Arctic Wyverns, only if you hunt the named one.

For fishing, the thing to avoid hunting is the Othmir, as they are the ones down on the coast where you will be hanging out fishing. They do have a faction hit for killing them.

Or just do a bazaar search and see what the reseller who just bought yours has marked it up to.

Othmir Faction can be fixed by hunting the Walruses hanging out in Eastern Wastes.

Or just sit somewhere on the beach where the othmirs dont roam. Can reccomend the last piece of beach at the SG zone wall side of the beach, only 2 stationary othmirs there, can easily find a spot to fish without getting aggro.

I can't speak for your server or comment on how viable artic wyverns for high level tailoring. But I can say that I sell my oils at 50 plat each, which seems to be the average on my server, and always sell within 2 days or so. I almost never sell them all straight away but they sell very steadily and when I do sell them it's almost always one person buying all the ones I have in stock.

What I mean by steadily is that because they take fixed amount of time and you can't really power your way through fishing (althoug AE fish farming would be interesting to see) there's no one mass producing them and undercutting the prices.

On Stormhammer, I generally try to keep about 150 jars of cod oil in stock at around 100pp each (everybody else sells smaller amounts for 150pp each).
The thing is, I don't generally sell them all that quickly. Usually a couple days goes by before someone picks them up. However, I'm not trying to sell them quickly, otherwise I'd always be fishing all the time, and not exping.

See, when I go out, I fish for 5-8 hours (at 200+mod skill) to get 150 cod. Then it takes 15-30 minutes to brew it into oil. So it's time consuming to produce, and I'm not getting any experience in the meantime.

My point is, if I wanted to spend all my time fishing in cobalt scar, I would, but 1 day a week is about all the time I want to spend fishing.
That's why I sell cod oil for 100pp. If I sell it for less, I'd be out of stock more often, which means I'd have to go fishing more, which means less exp for me

Yes, the arctic wyvern is a nice skillup path for when you just cannot take any more robes. Also provides something else not terribly expensive (if you farm the parts) for those with no cultural combines. After awhile when you start having many robes work, buying the velium and such even for arctic wyvern can be cheaper than making more chains. I stopped robes somewhere in the 230's and made just the wyvern masks. There was never anyone selling cod oils on my server or I would have happily purchased them rather than the hours of straight fishing. About the only good thing about fishing them myself was saving plat and I could buy wyvern hides and othmir furs from the farmers directly.

I have made probably 200k in the last 8 months or so selling cods on the Karana server. I sell them for 50pp each and fish them while surfing the net and other stuff (woohoo windowed mode!). But the cash cow appears to be over.

For a while they sold well. After the "Aid Hamel" (sp?) quest became known I couldn't keep them in stock. I'd fish a stack or two and they'd be gone in an hour. I saw people buying them and then turning around and sell them for 80pp each. I used the money to help fund my own tailoring habit.

The market has crashed, at least on Karana. I haven't sold a cod in 3 weeks. I keep an eye on the other sellers and see that they haven't sold any either. It has completely dried up and it happened overnight. Luckly for me I GMed tailoring at about the same time.

The place I fish is the little rock just off the beach near the wall to SG zone. It's just big enough to stand on to fish and I never get aggro from any of the mob.

                        Haddon?

Ever fish in QH? Sit down with some bait and wait for haddon. When he pops you can loot him for a fishbone earring and sell that for pp. currently selling for 2k. If you can forage, get some surefall sap too. Just my 2cp.

Arctic Wyvern IS a major skillup path. Once you get past the 220's makin solstice robes becomes expensive as you get too many successes. That puts you right into Reinforced Rockhopper and Velious Tailoring territory.

Of the various velious tailoring arctic wyvrn hides are the easiest componet to farm (or buy in the bazaar). The limiting factor is the cod oil. If I had had twice as much cod oil I would have sold twice as many Arctic Wyvern Masks to vendors.
