  • Question about pole breakage

I am currently doing some fishing for my RL grandchild's character who is working toward GM baking, he wanted Storm Salmon.
The short version of my story is:
5 broken poles in about an hour of fishing.
Do you think my RNG is hiccuping, or is there some bug that causes pole breakage to be much higher than usual?
    Longer version of story:
I had a tinkered pole, which I had had for several months, but I hadn't done intensive fishing as I did on July 2nd and 3rd.
    1. started casting in PoS at 19:45:41, my tinkered pole broke at 20:02:50.
    2. went to PoK and bought 2 poles, started fishing again at 20:25:15. Seven casts later, pole broke at 20:27:33.
    3. started casting again at 20:28:15, pole broke at 20:59:24.
    4. went to PoK and bought 5 poles, took some time off for hunting with friends, and decided to do the Fishing Companion quest.
July 03, I got the 4 fish needed, PoN: started at 21:16:47, had 4 cichlid by 21:26:26. PoV: started at 21:42:06, had 4 discus by 22:01:48. successfully combined the bones, sold the poles I had bought and headed back to get the fish so grandchild and a friend could do the quest. I summoned the pole, started fishing at 12:53:21, the pole broke at 13:01:13.
    5. summoned another pole right away, continued to fish, pole broke at 13:07:34.
    Summary from EQlog parser:
    Fishing:
    Bad casts: 11
    Casts: 395
    Fish caught: 224
    Chance of catching fish: 56.71%
    Scales/Sandals/etc: 101
    Chance of catching "other": 25.57%
    Nothing: 69
    Chance of catching nothing: 17.47%
    Lost bait: 8
    Chance of losing bait: 2.03%
    Beer spilled: 48
    Chance of beer abuse: 12.15%
    Poles broken: 5
    Chance of breaking pole: 1.27%

Though 1.27 seems not a very high number, I still feel that 5 poles in slightly more than an hour and a half of actual fishing is pretty scary.
If it matters at all, fishing skill is at 190, I did get 2 skill raises in that time (had KEI and wis maxed at level 61).
Is this just a run of VERY bad luck?
***edited to correct a typo and add some time fishing that I omitted***

Thanks for any insight anyone might lend me.

That seems high to me too, but the RNG is streaky like that.

I went through 500 bait in Cabilis tonight with a skill of 200 and summoned brell poles, only broke 3 times. Might just be the RNG frowning on you.

I suspect it’s just the RNG. When I first started playing EQ a couple of years ago I bought a fishing pole for my one and only character, my druid. I fished off and one for a good long time as I learned my way around Norrath. It wasn’t until I had reached 95 skill that my fishing pole broke. Until then I had no idea they could break. Since then I’ve never had a fishing pole last that long. I’ve done a lot of fishing with my last two characters. During an average hour of fishing I usually didn’t have a pole break. But sometimes I’d lose three poles. The RNG is just fickle, that’s all there is to it. I’m just glad all my characters now have Fisherman’s Companions. It certainly beats having to buy five poles every time I want to go fishing.
