  • Cobalt Cod

I needed some cod oil for my tailoring run so it was off to CS fishing poles in hand I went.

1000 bait and 7 fishing poles later I had:
    360 Fresh Fish
    223 Dragon Bay Snappers
    148 Cobalt Cods

Didn't count fish scales or other garbage.

13-14% seems to be the standard as far I have seen reading thru past posts.

Last night, my 42nd level druid decided to go fishing for Cobalt Cod for the very first time. Since she has only killed about 50 frost giants for CoV faction so far, I decided to leave all her stuff in her new bank space in case she died.

After using eight stacks of bait, a friend called for help in retrieving his corpse. So, for 160 casts of her Brell's Fishin' Pole:

      Skillups: 157 to 162

      Fresh Fish: ~ 45
      Fish Scales: ~ 45
      Cobalt Cod: 22
      Dragon Bay Snapper: 21
Misc. rusty daggers and sandals littering the ground

When she ported to her friend's location, he asked, "Why are you naked?"

And she replied, "I always fish naked!" /smirk

Question: Do you find that your head starts bopping along with the Othmirs' calypso music as you fish? Now I know why people kill those cute little guys -- TO TRY TO STOP THE MUSIC!

Cobalt Cod is about a 1 in 6 drop

I fish with my druid and enchanter in CS for Cobalt Cod. They stand side by side (two boxing) fishing. It's sort of a race to see which can get the most Cod. The druid used to win easily, until i increased the Wisdom on my enchanter. Now, they each have 140 wis (druid has lame equipment), and they each have 200 fishing skill. High INT did not help the enchanter, but higher WIS seams to help. The drop rate is about 1 cod out of 6 bait. The drop rate did not increase much after about level 120 fishing skill. Having level 200 fishing skill will not help you get more cod. This is boring, slow, painful, definately not fun. My time is probably better spent leveling.

Think of it as a break to sit and listen to the music and watch the otters at play, rather than "Dang, where's that cod?" Bring friends if you can, make it a beach party. Take regular breaks to get brewing up on the snappers or buy up the wyvern meat of the otter vendors and pickle 'em (if you have a spit, you can do this without stopping fishing). Check the time and get screenshots of sunset and sunrise.

Competitions are always fun (a friend and I ended up drinking a summoned ale every time we caught a named ... when you are trying to stay sober you'd be amazed at how often you seem to get the rare fish). Try to make it a point of the "journey" rather than the "destination" and you'll find it a lot more stressful

Before I go into CS and start fishing, what do I need to know about faction there? I am a 43rd level Barbarian Shaman. I've participated in maybe a total of 25 Giant kills in GD. Other than that, I don't think there is much I've done to affect any Vellious factions.

Hmmm....if you are KoS to the Velious dragons it is a little harder but once you get down to the water's edge you should be ok. The biggest problem for you will be the kiters (CS is chock full of druid/wizzie quad-kiters). If they pull CoV mobs (wyverns, drakes, etc.) past you and then have to evac you could be in trouble. Fish way over on the eastern edge of the lake, near the eastern-most othmir camp; in my experience few kiters go near there.

Quinner, if you haven’t been to CS let me explain the layout a bit. When you first port in you’ll find land running to your right and to your left. But if you run strait ahead you’ll very quickly be looking, or falling, down the edge of a cliff. At the base of the cliff is a sandy beach, water and several othmir camps. If you do not have decent factions with the dragons, the main danger is at the top of the cliff where the dragons hang out. If you invis and levitate yourself before you port in, all you have to do is run strait ahead and float down to the beach. Unless pulled there, the beach is dragon free. And I don’t think the othmir will hate you unless you’ve been killing them. And if you’ve killed ulthorks in Eastern Wastes the othmir may actually kiss your feet. And if you’ve ever killed ulthorks and gotten tusks, these can be turned in to the chief of the othmir, four at a time, for a reward, which can sometimes be a blue diamond.

                Happy fishing.

Thanks for the advice, Calabar and Deeger. I will be having some fun fishing this weekend. I found 200 catch-a-lot baits on a vendor and have taken it as an omen to go fish!

I normally bring alot of scent of marr and solvent and combine CE's while fishing...normally get about 15-20 cods per 10 stacks of CE's.

Brell's fishing componian is very cool!!

Yep, I love my Brell's fishing companion. It’s worth every plat I spent for the bones in the bazaar. And as fun as the summoned ale is, it would have been so nice if the pole instead summoned bait. Oh well, EQ was never designed for self sufficiency.

One other thing: there is a dragon that spawns in the water occasionally; I forget his name. He can see invis and will have you for lunch if he comes near you. I have no idea his pathing so he may never come near the shore.
