  • Broken pole -- AGAIN

I've got my ranger hunting in Nedaria's Landing lately. Since she's on the low end for the zone, there's a LOT of down time between fights, so I figured I'd get some fishing in. However, it doesn't seem I can go more than 5-10 casts without breaking a pole. I think I've gone through 5 poles in as many days, plus all of the time between breaking one and actually getting to somewhere to buy another. Since it's not a great zone for cash drops, and she's got arrow parts to buy, I can't keep pouring money into fishing poles like this.

Is there anything that might be affecting this, or have I just been unlucky? Her skill is EXTREMELY low (< 20) , might that have anything to do with it? I wouldn't think there would be a zone modifier for chance of breaking a pole, but it's getting to the point that I'm about ready to superstitiously avoid fishing there with ANY of my characters.

    Endless Poles

I don't think there is a zone modifier so its probably your low skill. If you can try and get the fish bones for the Fishermans Companion. It will summon you endless fishing poles and you will not have this worry again.

I can't tell you how much it would cost but you should at least look into it.

That's kinda what I figured, since I don't remember losing this many poles with any of my other toons. Then again, that was a LONG time ago, my memory may be fading.

I'd love to get a Fisherman's Companion... but I have a feeling the bones are going to cost more than I'm wanting to spend for this toon, and I can't get them myself, so I think that's probably out. I'm going to either have to spend the money on normal poles or keep my fishing to other toons, I think.

Kind of a late post but I would look into doing the Fisherman's quest in the PoK. This is especially helpfull if you are going to do a lot of fishing. The parts to it can normally be bought in the bazaar for a nominal fee.

It is your skill that causes you to break that many poles. Though you have hit the bad side of the RNG.

You can get both sets of these bones for 50pp per bones=200pp on MT server. It summons endless poles that have a modifier. When I started fishing I also started a new toon for fun, a forager. I did research and found he could make lures with what he was hunting, Gnolls. So I kept those furs and skilled-up using the lures, then started fishing. By then my skill was high, I had a pole and homemade bait that had modifiers, and I didn't waste anytime farming for nothing.

Silly superstition perhaps, but I started tradeskilling with my wizard and on my first few fishing expeditions I was breaking poles left and right.

From then on I've always bought 2 and kept a spare on me, and the breakage has stopped!

It may have been my imagination, or it may have been something real. Always hard to tell when you do as many tradeskills on as many alts as me over the course of 5 years. However, I *do* remember a much higher rate of breakage at very low fishing skill. It was bad enough that I made sure my fishing mules had enough levels under their belts that they could get at least 30-40 in fishing, if not more.

Of course, since I'd be fishing and foraging at the same time, and then leveling these mules up to get better at both, this usually meant that my "mules" suddenly got into their 30s, 40s, then 50s, before I realized what I was doing.

There's a fishing vendor right next door to nedaria in Natimbi. Talk to the Magus and he should send you there.

Also, you might want to check out Forgotten Halls zone. Talk to some guy at the left most dock, he'll give you an expedition to go in, follow the blue line and click on a rock to get in. You'll have to say 'i'm ready to leave" to the guide near where you zone in if you want to get out.
It doesn't work real well in Everfrost to tell the Magus you want to

Also in the Karanas there is a Barbarian fishing village, really nice people there. Stop by there AFTER you have stocked up on bait in either Qeynos or one of the other Karana villages or farming outposts. It's right by the beach and you can fish and break poles til your hearts desire.

An' can buy baits an' poles from East Freeport docks an' North Ro barbarians (but they don't like neato necros ) an' can fish inna middle of the desert which is kinda weird. Maybe Ros aren't deserts but really wide giant beaches!

I've been fishing in some lesser used zones while waiting on pita spawns lately so I've been able to use an alt to stock a merchant with a few extra fishing poles and stacks of bait. Might not work in a crowded zone, but the fishing/foraging/divination practice is handy sometimes.

PS. WOOT! Stormfeather popped in the middle of posting this. Guess my fishing will stay at 138 for a little while.

I normally try to avoid buying from or being around barbarians - some slight misunderstanding about killing some guards at a village in West Karana in my youth or some such....

Somebody posted something about stats (specifically Strength) having something to do with it.

I dunno about that, but I do know my 105 (unbuffed) STR Fishing Barbarian is still using the same pole he started with, but my 105 unbuffed Enchanter goes through them like frat boys through free beer.

RNG is odd. I fished all the fishable supplies to get a stack each for faith/spiritstones, and broke a pole a grand total of two times in like five hours. When I was doing fishing a few months ago I'd break like 2-4 times an hour.
