I spent a short time fishing and managed to get enough for about four stacks of tuna and crab meat. Then I made myself some beer battered tuna sandwiches for the stat bonuses. I'd say it was worth my time.

AS Fishing; Natimbi Foraging
My druid porter is maxxed fishing with his companion; he is bound at the bank in Abysmal. I had him maxxed fishing long before GoD. But thanks to GoD baking, I am 228 from making foraged Cragbeast and Hynid steaks and pies. I am trivial with Hynid steaks, so I have been giving those to friends who need food; otherwise I sell them in bazaar for 15 or 20 pp each depending on market conditions. Cragbeast meat I use for skillups for myself to keep a WIS food item.
On the other hand, my rogue has increased his fishing from about 90 to 191 since GoD came out, and I too benefited from the pre-nerf pricing. Since the nerf, I still fish there, as he has increased his baking to 160 from making crab and tuna foods. He in turn makes the Tuna food for my INT casters. Lately I haven't cared much to make anything from Crab meat, mostly out of boredom I just sell it back to a vendor.
I keep a mixing bowl handy and break down the meat into 1 lb sizes for ease in stacking. I have also started keeping track of how many lbs. of meat I get from 1 stack of bait. Currently, my average is 162 lbs per 20 bait, an average of about 8 lbs per cast. That equates to about 8 baking attempts for each 3 cp fishing bait. I am about 100 brewing, so I make the best sauce available for approximately 7 or 8 gp. Add about 2 sp for water and jug of sauces, I can make beer-battered crab or tuna soup for less than 1 pp each, which will take me to about 162 baking.
My point is that Abysmal fishing is still good for something: it could take you to 250 baking (Beer-battered crab souffle = 252 trivial)
EDIT: Abysmal Sea now has a Magus that will take you to Natimbi or Nedaria, located in the central Hold area, which I thought at first was the captain's room, since Morden Rasp was initially there...

Abysmal Sea is a Great Tradeskill Zone...
I know it's an old thread, but I came across it during a search and I just have to clarify that AS is still one of the most useful zones in the game.
First, you can get to 54 in ALL tradeskills, free, using quests in Abysmal Sea.
Second, you can get to 250 skill in baking by doing nothing but the free quest and then crab/tuna up to 200 and hynid/cragbeast to 250. It costs next to nothing. In fact, it's highly profitable if you sell your products in bazaar. I get as much as 14.9 pp per item (298pp per stack) selling both to people who want the stats (6 wis and 4 int thrills casters) and people doing the Breakdown in Communication quest.
There are ingredients to many cheap, vendor-only or mostly-vendor recipes which are sold ONLY in AS, or only in AS and one other obscure zone.
And don't forget that AS has many of the obscure spells which were previously only on unique vendors and have NOT been added to PoK vendors, like the shaman warder spells.
And is there another zone where you can buy all the parts to make Grobb Liquidized Meat in a single room? I make a pretty penny selling those, too.
And the new poison vial recipes, which don't require any skins (to my annoyance as a tradeskill fodder dealer) require an item only sold by vendors in AS, right? That's how I got my pottery up to 200 with almost no expenditure or effort.
