I dunno, when I did mine, I already had fishing skill of 200.... (which I got (the last 2 points) while fishing the fish for the quest... woo hoo!)

preparing the valorian discus and nightmare cichlid was not trivial at 171....I have since raised fishing to 186 but haven't prepared any fish at this level.

Its not that hard

I got my fishing companion fairly early. While practising at the pool in PoK someone came into the zone asking about the quest. After chatting a while it turned out that he had 6 valorian discus, but no idea about what to do with them. Having all the kit on me I offered to try. He gave me 3 of the fish and I suceeded with 2 of the 3 attempts.

Being please to have his Valorian discus bones he gave me the remaining 3 fish and I suceeded twice more . Needless to say I was delighted, having no idea where a non PoV level 49 cleric was going to get some.

That was at around 132 fishing with a 3% lure. (4 from 6)

At that point we raced up to the stream in PoN and had Kane Bayle's first Planar fishing competition. I was delighted to get my Nightmare cichlid first and combine them for the bones before popping down to PoK for my companion. (As far as I know the first on server - but I may be wrong)

A few minutes later I combined his cichlid for him and we went our own ways happy with a summonable fishing pole. ;-)

Now I am regularly seen with my pole in hand even when raiding, if only the pole summoned bait instead of beer! Oh well off for some more Gunthak Mackeral..................
