  • I am new to brewing...(little help)

I have looked all over the brewing boards and there is nothing like on the baking side, where there is a skill up path... the only one I heard was to 122 with water and grub...

    is there anything beyond that?

There's quite a bit available after that. You might want to look over the recipes on the main site and plot your skill up path. If you can forage, there are a number of options available to you.

If you don’t mind reading through my babble, I’ll be happy to take the time to try to answer your question.

The way I look at trade skills there are two ways of doing them: the fun way or the fast way. The fun way is to look at the recipe page and make things that sound interesting. For me this works best with baking. I love all the crazy things you can make with baking. But brewing has some of these as well, such as Gruppa's Poppin Ale, Jumjum Spiced Beer, Ogre Swill and Bleeding Brain. It can be fun to make things like these and hand them out to random people, especially players new to the game. It’s an amazing way to break the ice and meet new friends.

The fast way is to make the cheapest or easiest items that will get you to your skill goal as quickly as possible. There are certain paths that most people take in each trade skill when they are going for pure skill. The path branches off in many places, as different people will have different ideas as to which path is best, but in general the paths are very similar.

Ravenstorm’s post has a little bit of both the fun way and the fast way. For anyone new to trade skills I’d suggest doing as much of the fun way as possible. And the reason is simple, its fun. But if you are in a hurry to reach a certain skill level there is a slightly faster way. So here’s my suggestion for the fast way to 250 brewing, for whatever it’s worth.

              01-122 Fetid Essence
This is extremely fast and extremely cheap if you have the Planes of Power expansion. There is a short gnome guy, as if there were any other kind of gnome guy, standing on the porch of a building across from the “evil” section of the Plane of Knowledge. He will sell you fishing grubs. A lady vendor around the corner from him will sell you water. Combine one water and one fishing grub to make Fetid Essence. That’s it. That will take you to 122 skill.

              123-151 Skull Ale
This is a nice combine because it uses so few items in the combine. Unfortunately it also requires a Cyclops skull, which is returned after each combine. If you are high enough level you can kill an undead Cyclops in South Karana and loot his skull. If not, you can try searching in the bazaar. If you can’t find one, just skip ahead to Faydwer Shakers.

              152-188 Faydwer Shakers
This is another good choice because there aren’t a lot of items to combine and everything is store bought. If you have good Freeport faction, East Freeport is a good place to make these. Everything you need is in two close by shops and one of these has a brew barrel.

              189-248 Minotaur Hero's Brew
Now you’ve reached the point where most people cringe. The reason most people do Hero Brew from this point on is because there is nothing else so cheap and easy and is all store bought. The only down side to this recipe is that it has nine items that are combined to make it. And since you are making Hero Brews over such a long stretch of skill points it ends up being a LOT of clicking. Personally, I never found Hero Brews to be as bad as most people seem to think. After spending countless hours farming materials for just a few tailoring combines I truly appreciate being able to buy everything from a vendor. And after baking Halas Pies until they trivialed, I also found the relatively few mouse clicks somewhat refreshing. But for anyone new to trade skills this will be a true test of courage, or at least manual dexterity.

              249-250 Kaladim Constitutional
You could also make demi-sec champagne at this point, but the champagne is FAR more expensive so I suggest constitutionals instead. Constitutionals will require you to pick up ground spawn in the dwarf city of Kaladim, but they all spawn in a one garden so they are easy to find. The big expense for constitutionals is you have to buy a corking device, which is made by gnome tinker player characters. The priced have dropped a lot recently, but they are still costly. However, the device is returned after each combine and if you want to make many of the stat drinks you’ll have to buy one anyway.

That’s it. That’s one of the fastest ways to reach 250 brewing. But do try to stop to smell the roses, as it were, every now and then. Have some fun with the skill. After all, having fun is what brought us all together.

woot thanks calabar. thanks for helping with more indepth detail. am at work and dont have the time to go into details :/
all my post are pretty short and fast. cant use government systems to do much outside the net.
fun way and fast way. fun way are always fun just takes longer to level up.
fast way...its very boring. but with fast way when you reach certain skill points ie., 180-200 you can pretty much make lots of neat stuff. (5 percent geerlock helps too, or 10-15 percent if theres one out there)
dont forget to drink some of your brews you make. lol
some of my favorites: egg nogs for xmas
                vodka
                qeynos ice tea
                kaladim consitution
                fruit and berry juice good

ps...brewing and baking is fun.....................................fishing and drinking is umm roflmao

If you don't have (or can't get) the Cyclops Skull, try doing Ol' Tujim's Fierce Brew for a while. It trivials at 135 and all the components can be bought. (I switched from Skull Ale to that since I do my Brewing in PoK and there isn't any Short Beer for sale there) Barley, Hops, Yeast, Malt and a Cask. Makes 2 per combine.

Or Double Brewed Double Stout Dwarven Ale. 2 Dwarven Ales, 2 Short Beers and a Cask. Makes 2, trivials at 142.

(I'll probably move to Kaladim to do Brewing after I trivial the Ol' Tujim's and go back to making Skull Ale)

Incidentally, the Undead Cyclops is actually a giant Skeleton.....with TWO eyes! (I bought my Cyclops Skull, but I looked him up at Alla)

You are exactly right; he's a giant skeleton. Maybe for some strange reason his two eye sockets fuse together upon his death. Perhaps it’s a curse. *shrugs* And if anyone plans to hunt him for his abnormal skull, be aware that he cannot be snared or rooted. He was green to my 51 druid, but several attempts at both spells all failed. So be prepared to have him right on top of you as you try to bash or blast him to death. Or is that re-death, considering that he’s already dead?

He is also pretty fast. If you are chasing him from behind, forget about it if you aren't SoW'd or have some other speedy buff. I saw him running in the distance and started chugging after him. I couldn't catch him for the life of me. And unlike most other mobs, he never stopped, milled about, then took off again. He constantly ran. I eventually lost site of him, but saw him again about 3 minutes later. I cut across the middle of the zone so I could head him off. Barely made it in time. Got my skull.

That was the way it was both times I killed him. Never stopping. Always running. I haven't followed him on his whole path, but basing on where I saw him running I would guess that he just continually runs a giant circular lap around the zone. So if you see him in one area and he runs out of range, just hang out there. He should come back around in a few minutes, provided nobody else waxes him first.

maybe in its flesh form it had one magical eye and some necro made him/her into a skel. maybe it drank something bad it brewed and gave itself a splitting headache...drum roll. and as you mentioned the two eyes became one.

Since the recent patch that allows casks to be stacked, there are a number of other recipes that now are viable options. Below is a lit of the ones that I think are reasonable to work with now (note, I'm not suggesting this as a PATH but rather a list of some more options).

31 --- Short beer: barley, hops, malt, cask
51 --- Short ale: barley, hops, water, cask
58 --- soda water: soda, water flask
68 --- Ale: barley, malt, water, cask
                          68 --- Red port : 4 bottles red wine, cask (success = 1 port, 4 empty bottles)
135 --- Ol' Tujim's Fierce Brew: barley, hops, yeast, malt, cask
142 --- Double brewed double stout dwarven ale: 2 dwarven ale, 2 short beer, cask
142 --- Tail kicker lager : 2 lizard tail, vinegar, malt, yeast, 2 flasks water
148 --- Armadillo simmer ale: Armadillo meat, ogre swill, vinegar, malt, yeast, armadillo husk
155 --- Hulgarsh: 2 vodka, water, fishing bait, cask
155 --- Skunk breath ale: 2 skunk glands, gnomish spirits, short beer, malt, yeast, cask (Skunk glands from large skunks in Butcherblock)
188 --- Faydwer shaker : elven wine, gnomish spirits, dwarven ale, mead, cask
                          248 --- Minotaur Hero's Brew : 3 malt, yeast, 2 flask water, 2 short beer, cask

Soda water does not require a cask but there might be a market for it in the bazaar to make money on.

Tail Kicker Lager and Armadillo Simmer Ale also do not use a cask but thy are frequently over looked as options. Depending on what race you are, they may be GREAT options due to the potential ease at finding the ingredients.

                              If I may?

Fishing Grub + Flask of water = fetid essense. Trivs at 122. Cheapest way to get over 100 invented. Easy, everything stacks, everything to be found in PoK so no dangerous runs.

                              if you want cheap:

1 payala (sp) fruit + 1 flask of water = Shar Val Essense. Trivs 168. This is cheap, pick up groundspawns for FREE and water flasks which can be found all over (and with the moon being available, I mean REALLY over ) Norrath. Skips the fierce brew and the faydwer shakers.

OR if you want store purchased you can do skull ale or Ol' Tijums Fierce Brew and Faydwer Shakers to your heart's content. I'll bet you could purchase enough fruit from the Bazaar to get the essense up though.

Once you are over that, however, there really is no other way to cheaply and quickly raise your skill over 200 than MHB.

                              Just my two cents,
