I'm not sure if it's just me, but I find that making Misty Thicket Picnics are easier, more profitable, and cheaper than that of making Halas 10lb Meat Pies.
My skill is at 217, so I still fail quite a bit when making MTP, but these sell for 20p each on the Tribunal server while HMP only sell for 3p each.
I find it easier to make the MTP subcombines than those of HMP.. you don't have to filet the meat, make the cream, then combine them, make the dough.. blah blah..
I am also getting nice skill ups. In the last 2 days I have made about 200+ MTP at 213. Now I am 217. Good enough for me

It has not been true for me over the past couple of days.

Over the past two days, I have made over 285 combine attempts without a skillup. Most of those have been MTPs. Current skill is 196. (I say "Over 285 combine attempts" because I do MTPs in batches of 60, and I forgot to count how many MTP attempts were left out of 60 the last time I got a skill up. Might have been as many as 15 left out of that batch of 60, so possibly as high as 300 attempts without a skillup. But it's been 285 since I started counting.)

Of that 285, 51 were ohabah truffles, 3 were candied cockroaches, and the rest were MTPs.

Woulda saved myself some time if I'd just gone ahead, picked up a few hundred plat, and just clicked "destroy."

There are fewer combines with MTPs for sure. A lot of this has to do with the yields on the sub combines. The HMPs however have a MUCH higher success rate than MTPS. At 250 skill I think MTPS are slightly better success rate than 50%. So if your success rate vs sale price to get rid of them comes out better for you, then I say yes, use them. I know I don't make HMPS anymore unless I actually need them. Just too much of a PITA for something that sells for 2.5p. That said, even at 2.5p I make over 1.5p per pie. But this means that for all the subcombines needed for 100 attempts at pies, which takes me over 2 hours to do counting getting KEI, ruinning back and forth, NOT counting farming mammoth meat, etc. I end up with about 560-580 pies. Not bad really, but 560 x 1.5 = 880pp

That's if you farm your own componets. It's far far too easy to make better money without getting carpel tunnel syndrome than to make pies.
