  • Hobgoblin Surprise

Hobgoblin Surprise is, I'm told, specifically for the Beginner's Magic Manual Quest in PoK. ( I noticed two Traders (Nameless server) in the Bazaar last night selling Surprise for 2000pp each. ) The quest, if you have a Hobgoblin Surprise, is easy, and returns a very nice book that is range slotable. So, can Surprise be used in other quests, or is this the only one? What is the recipe? Skill level required and trivial to make this? ...and does anyone have a spoiler or method of getting the ingredients ? Since Hobgoblins are Planes creatures, they're pretty tough ...and the meat , etc. may be fairly expensive?

I'm also on The Nameless Server So far I've seen Hobgoblin Suprise for sale for 600pp a sandwhich and one guy was selling them for 1k a sandwhich. I myself wouldn't pay over 200pp for a HobGoblin Suprise, maybe I'm just cheap :P However, I found some HobGoblin meat for very very cheap one day, 10pp a piece to be exact Anyways, heres the recipe for the sandwhich...

hobgoblin surprise-- hobgoblin meat, pie tin, bread, brown gravy-- tanaan oven--- Trivial >250

Stats: enduring meal, DEX 5, AGI 5, wt 0.4, medium, none/none

You can get the meat from PoN. Not sure exactly where in PON though since I've never went there. Also, the Hobgoblin Suprise is not used in any other quests, that I know of at least.

Those Hobgoblins are MEAN. The little so and so's killed me twice on my way to the docks in PoN this weekend.

Anyway, the graphic for this mess looks like the graphic for a heart. Not heart shaped, mind you... just like the EQ heart graphic (I have a heart i got off of a named critter I killed in Nek one time... looks just like the surprise)

So far as I know, that is the only quest it is used for... 2000p is darn well ridiculous. On Bristlebane, I have a standing offer to make them for people... for free, provided they provide the meat. Throwing an extra meat my way does not hurt though

I was offered 1000 plat to do 3 combines of hobgoblin surprise, whether or not I succeeded.

I'm soft, I turned it down, it's a ludicrous amount. But people did seem to be quite obsessive about getting their surprise (possibly collecting the meat and having lower level baker friends do the combines and being frustrated at the failure rate?) ... I doubt it will last though.

I have never killed Hobgoblins. All my parts have come from friends or merchants (I love farming merchants after a patch).

I'm on the Karana server and the Hobgoblin surprise started at 500pp and is now down to 300pp. I am still selling them consistantly. I just made GM baker last week and made 20 out of 23 combines

I have only been asked to do one combine when I was about 242 skill. I don't have a "charge" but accept whatever the person thinks it worth.

350 seems to be the normal price on Sol Ro, which isn't that bad for an item that gives 6 wis and int, AC, hp, and mana, imho. Compare that to other wis/int items out there. BAMs go for around 700 on my server, and while jewelry is priced less, its still more or less only competitive when you don't factor in all the additional stats on the book. And the book can go in either secondary or ranged (the latter is VERY useful for my paladin).
Now on the other hand, a quick search using the word 'hobgoblin' showed that someone was attempting to sell the meat for 500...

There is no call for charging 500 for the meat. Sheesh.

I guess it is their meat though. Can't blame a fellow for trying to get all he can when selling his meat, I suppose.

                Oh well.

                    You think that's bad...

I can't sell the Planar Peridot Steins for 225p... and someone was selling Planar Blood Brew for 2500p!

Considering you have to do all three quests to get the final reward (which nobody has yet, they're just now reaching the Elemental Planes), it's a real PITA.

I haven't even SEEN the blood brew for sale in the bazaar on my server, or any of its components (iirc, one of them is no drop anyway), and as a tank, that's definitely the one that would be of the most use to me (I have the other two beginner books - magic for tradeskilling, and stealth for adventuring), so that 1k+ price doesn't really surprise me. It also doesn't really surprise me that the stein goes for so little. The unfired part is the hard part, but you can literally by the parts by the bucketload and dump them on a pottery wheel until you get lucky. The only planar drop needed for the unfired stein is the tainted planar essence, and a quick merchant mining trip will turn up plenty of that. The valar crystals might have been a little trickier to come by since merchants won't buy them - except for the fact that everyone now knows that they're used with the steins, and you can usually find a several for sale cheap in the bazaar. That just leaves the lacquered Peridot, and the JC needed for that.
At any rate, my own feeling is that the stealth book is the least useful of the three, although others may disagree with me.

I sold a lot for 2k each. Certainly, based on the cost to create you could sell for less, but look at the equivalent items (as near as I could find anyway):

                            Hive Fiend's Brain +2 AC +7 Int +7 Cha +30 Mana +1.50 Wt
Golden Idol of Bertoxxulous +4 AC +5 Wis +5 Int +9 vsDis +40 Mana +1.10 Wt
Golden Idol of Cazic Thule +5 AC +7 Str +5 Wis +5 Int +30 Mana +1.10 Wt
Golden Idol of Solusek Ro +4 AC +6 Int +9 vsFire +40 Mana +1.10 Wt
Book of Tactics +5 AC +6 Dex +6 Int +1.50 Wt (also ID2)
Iksar Hide Manual +5 AC +5 Int +10 vsPos +10 vsDis +45 Mana +3.00 Wt

Given that these items probably don't sell for 250pp each, why sell Hobgoblin surprise which essentially gives an equivalent quality item for 250pp?

Call me greedy I guess, but selling for less than 2k is taking plat out of my pocket.

                              Great responses!

I want to thank everyone, and any others in advance, for these excellent responses. I'm finally at 230 in Baking and inching forward each day and I'm hoping Baking will continue to be a wanted service by the folks on my server.
