MTPs are exactly what collapsable tradeskill containers are all about. I usually keep my collapsable sewing kit in inventory, but it's easily replaced with the spit, fletching kit, or mixing bowl if circumstances require it. When it comes to actually making the MTPs, what I equip is:
One full 10-slot bag each of sandwiches, salads, mints, beer, and mature cheese
One and a half stacks each of steel boning and woven mandrake
Two and a half stacks of jumjum cake
I arrange everything so my collapsable sewing kit is in the lower-right corner of my inventory, and when it's open, it's immediately adjacent and to the left of the oven container.
For each run of 20 attempts, I first do two combines of the steel boning and woven mandrake in the sewing kit to make the picnic baskets. I put the first 10 in the oven temporarily while I make the second 10, but ultimately, all 20 end up in the sewing kit. Next, I do 4 conversions of jumjum cakes into slices in the oven, transferring the slices into slots in the sewing kit as I produce them. Next, I move one stack each of the sandwiches, salads, mints, beer, and mature cheese into the sewing kit, then do 20 attempts. It's not the most time-efficient way to make MTPs, probably, but I think it's pretty efficient in terms of inventory space.
Personally, though, given the choice between MTPs and cheesy casseroles for skilling up, I'd go with the casseroles...even if it takes you 2 or 3 weeks to stock up enough for 100 attempts, I was consistently getting 4x as many skillups off of casseroles as from MTPs...I was getting about 10 skillups per 200 attempts with casseroles (for example, I went from 240 to 250 in just under 220 attempts at 255 WIS), whereas MTPs would give me 5 skillups per 400 attempts.

I didn't count how many picnic combines it took me to get those last points, but it was lots.
However, I must be unique in actually enjoying making MTPs - there is a great post on the old message board from ages ago on how to make lots of picnics whilst just using 3 10-slot bags, a technique I still use today. It can be found here:
RNG hated me last night. I have 300 Wisdom and usually do batches of 5 stacks of MTP and average about 1 per stack. Last night went through 5 stacks (100 attempts) and only got 2 point. So I decided to try again and combined 5 more stacks and got 1 point. 10 stacks (200 attempts) and only 3 points. I am hoping it is better tonight. Stuck at 243 atm.

Guess its just me then, MTP is hard for me to make. I do all my baking in SH, rest in Halas (cept Jewlery). Yes MTP is easy to make once you have ALL the supplies needed for finaly combine. However evertime i make it, i have to find someone who has veggies and find someone who has brownie parts. Then I have to make a mixing bowl and resell my spit. (my inventory has a container in every slot :P ) After i make/buy mixing bowl have to go find loom. then i have to go make jum jum drink.
Ahh, a suggestion if I may -
1) Dump the spit from the begining - I used to make a new mixing bowl every time as well, but have since bought a collapsable one - this should be kept on you and up during the whole cooking process
2) Get a large sewing kit - keep it available to do combines in as you work
3) Stock up on veggies and brownie parts ahead of time - I've got a ranger twink who I used to farm many of my components - one day in Steamfront of GF farming brownies and foraging took care of my needs for some time.
4) As I said above, do most of the combines as you need them so that you've only got a stack of raw materials instead of several stacks of finished goods - jumjum beer being the only exception. For the jumjum salad, if I'm doing 200 combines, I can either take up 4 slots for a stack of each of the four ingredients, or I can take up 10 slots for the finished salads.
Ok. I finally finished ding at 250 last night. I used mostly MTP to go from about 220 to 250. I had RNG against me the last 20 points or so. I had 300 Wisdom the entire time.
I didn't keep a detailed data but for me to go from 238 to 250, it took me:
~2 stacks (36 combines) of cheesy vegetable casserole
~1 stack (28 combines) of various PoP recipies
~35 stacks of MTP (686 combines)
That is a lot more than what I expected. I figured about 350 combines would be what I needed to go from 238 to 250 but took me almost twice as much. I had as many as almost 4 stacks of combines without a point up. It was very frustrating. I hope other combines are not as bad in the future.
