  • Mamoth hunting questions

    Spent the other evening hunting with my ranger toon in Everfrost so my troll could skill up his baking - killed a dozen calves and four adult mamoths - got a grand total of two meats from the adults and none from the calves.

    1) Do the calves drop the meat?
    2) What are the place holders for the mamoths, if any?
    3) If I bring my troll out to EW, will he have better luck with the mamoths there?
    4) What are the PH for the EW mamoths?
    5) Any additional comments which you think may help are welcomed.

    Thanks in advance!

    EW mammoths

    The area east of the Kael ramp in EW should have all the mammoths you need. Just watch for the occasional snow griffon or manticore.

      Im ~90 % sure that the calves can drop mammoth meats also.

      While youre there, dont forget to check vendors for ones that have been sold. Dont forget to auction to the zone that you want to buy them.

      Can also find them in bazaar for ~5pp ea occaisonally (well on zebuxoruk atleast).

        I know that the calves in Everfrost drop meat... that's the only place I've hunted, so I don't know about other mammoths. In Everfrost, between calves and adult mammoths, I think I generally get meat about one third of the time.

          Calves definitely drop meat.... Just not often. The key is just to keep killing them (unless EW is a viable option for you... It is better there).

          Have fun.... Another way is just to buy the meat off of the hunters in Everfrost. I almost always am able to find a char who has a stack or so to sell.

            I would suggest going to Eastern Wastes. You'll get a lot more mammoth meats there.

              The drop rate for mammoth meat in EW is a lot better than in Everfrost. My ranger has been hunting there for a while now. I’m not sure what the drop rate is exactly, but its been well over two thirds for my ranger. Of course, the mammoths in EW are higher level than the ones in Everfrost. If you don’t have a character that can solo them, I’d suggest teaming up with a druid or a ranger. Both have panic animal spells. A necromancer would also work well, as they can fear just about anything. Keep the mammoth snared and feared and beat it to death. Its not very sporting, but it works.

              I would also recommend pulling to the shore. Fighting in the middle of EW is just begging for adds. If you run along the South shore, you’ll be able to find lots of mammoths. They roam just a short way in from the water and you can pull them back to the edge of the ice and fight them without having to worry overly much about adds. I usually hunt by the Coldain Camp (#11 on the EQAtlas map), but there are often a lot of mammoths by the Portal to Sleeper's Tomb (#10 on the EQAtlas map).

              Best of luck,

                Eastern Wastes vs Everfrost

                I'm just kind of chuckling to hear so many folks say that EW is better for the meat drops ~ I've been levelling my druid there the last few weeks, and have not gotten a single piece of meat dropped. On the other hand, while killing placeholders waiting for the tainted mammoth to spawn in EF for an epic drop, I got about a dozen pieces of meat.

                  Where were you hunting Danae? When Ihunted mammoths close to the bridge long ago, I had good luck with the meats.

                  Maybe the meat god just has not been looking kindly on your activities?

                    I think we're talking about the same place ~ the bridge near the zone to Iceclad? Thats where I was. Maybe Tunare was feeling feisty those days, not sure. I hit 250 months ago, but figured I'd save the meat for future guild supply marathons anyway. :?

                      Calves and Mommas

                      Both calves and mommas dropped Mammoth Meat for me in Everfrost. I went there with my Dwarf Warrior to hunt, and got almost a stack of it in a few days of moderate hunting.
                      Perhaps it's the timing of the spawns? I don't know, as I'm fairly new to all this (but loving it).

                        Anyone know the place holders for the mamoths in either zone?

                        Hunting in EW is no biggy - my 46 troll SK is the one who needs the meat.

                          Don't forget other drops

                          BIG thing not to forget

                          EW = Low cash
                          EF = Tusks cash

                          so for the baker who wants to cover the cost of the other ingredients for Halas pies - I say Everfrost all the way.

                            PH's

                            Cigarskunk,
                            As a note of caution, I have no data to back this up. I strongly believe that the orc shamans and mountianeers and maybe the ice bone skellies are place holders for the big mammoths. This is based only on my observations from leveling my BL on mammoths almost exclusively from lv 26 through 32. I tend to kill all the "yard trash" when I'm out hunting mammoths but I tend to see a group of mammoth spawns several minutes after I kill a number of the shaman's and mountianeers. Is it coincidence? Perhaps.

                              The "common knowledge" / myth / possible truth when my Shaman was growing up in Everfrost was that the spiders were place holders for the mama mammoths. No clue how true that may be but that was what "everyone" knew back then.
