  • Dye Trivial Nerf?

Pardon me if this is a newb-type question.

Got back way too late to exp last night with my mains, so I decided to log onto my 47 Shammy Rishathra, who has been woefully neglected since PoP flags got removed. Figured I'd start on his alchemy, something I'd been meaning to do for some time, and had been hoarding charcoal and russet oxide from vendors for.

So I get KEI (hey, he's a troll, needs all the help with wis he can get), shake open a foldable bearskin bag, and pop in charcoal, empty vial, water - and get do not combine. Try the same thing with russet oxide, empty vial, and water, and again get: do not combine.

Being a tad frustrated, I decide maybe it's the container. Not recalling any medicine bag vendors in PoK (like I said, it was late and I was running on three cylinders), I remember my rogue friend who used to make dyes for me when they actually sold for something used a mortar and pestle, so I decide to had over to the poison vendor are and get a mortar and pestle. I figured hey, I know I don't have any poison-making ability, but I can see if it's the right recipe and maybe just the bag I'm using.

I open up the mortar and pestle, pop in charcoal, water, and an empty vial, hit combine. This time they do combine, but I get the "you can not raise your skill any higher" message. This when my current skill level is only 21. I do the same thing, and the dye is trivial at 21 for russet oxide and also permafrost (I fail with my one sarcosyphia fungus, no idea there.)

So to this alchemy newb it looks like:

    - dye will not combine in the foldable bearskin pouch
    - dye trivials have been reduced to 21 for at least three of the dyes
    (black, blue, and russett)
    - shammies using mortar and pestle (poison-making apparatus) still make skill checks against alchemy

Does this square with what anyone else has seen? Again, sorry if this is a dead horse - just tried a search for "dye" and got only one responce, and I'm a total alchemy newb.

I'm pretty sure that the reason you're getting the "you can no longer advance" message is that your poison-making skill is maxed -- at zero. I'm a paladin smith (no alchemy, but I used the dyes for actually dying fine plate armor), and I've done a few of the dye combines in a mortar and pestle. I got the same message.

Only rogues can get poison making skillups. All other classes doing poison combines attempt them at zero skill, and always get the "no skillup" message. I remember doing some other combines in the M&P and getting the same message (celestial essence, I think, is like that too).

It's possible that the dye combines just don't work in a folding bag; they may have missed a few of the recipes when implementing the new container.

I'd try the combine in a traditional (medicine?) bag and see if it works.

Aye, if they don't work in the folded bag but do in a regular bag, then it needs to be /bugged and hopefully will get fixed fast. I'll remove folded bags from the usable containers for the fine plate extracts for now.

That highlighted bag is for combining 5 or 10 potions into a 5 or 10 Charge potion. I believe that was your error you were having with the mixing you were doing. The bag to make potions only has 6 slots that is the way you can tell. Hope that helps.

Ah - wrong type of bag.

Yes, tried it with a store-bought medicine bag, had no problem. Got my 15 cheap skill-ups to 36.

            So:

            - wrong type of medicine bag for the initial combines, and

            - apparently the combines in the mortar and pestle *were* checked against the (unable to be raised) poison skill.

            Thanks,
