  • New recipie books/vials?

Been looking since I logged back on today (will not have the expansion till Friday). Any idea where the new books should be at and all? That should NOT be restricted to the new expansion as it's a game wide skill..... and I've not found any yet

Okay, this was answered by Ngreth on the serverwide channel. They revamped the old/original books (ie. updated them) with the new recipies and the like.

Should be new text. compare it to the text here http://lomonmanor.home.comcast.net/l...des/index.html

if it is the same then something is up.

I tried to keep in the spirit of the way it was written before, so it SHOULD look similar.

Jonas letter 1 has slightly different text than posted as I had to edit and old one.

                Letters of Jonas 1.

                Dearest Allyssa,

I'm writing to you to say that I am well. I have reached Halas and met the locale medicine man (or "Shaman" as he refers to himself). He's a rough sort, but has a good nature, and his manner with those who are brought to him is as fine and caring as I would hope for from any of my students.

Convincing him to allow me to study his use of herbs and potions has been difficult in the extreme. To his people, he is as much a member of the clergy as any Priest of Mithaniel Marr is to us, and his treatments are deeply held as mysteries. We spent a full night of eating and drinking (these barbarians are a rough lot) without success, although he seemed impressed that a "city man" could match his pace at imbibing.

Indeed, I had almost despaired of doing so until the next morning. Waking with a severe headache from my excesses the night before, I blearily made my way from my hut to meet him. Initially amused at my state, he threw some sticklewort and four leaves I recognized as nightshade (3 leaves and a sage for cure line)(a general folk remedy chewed for aches in these parts) into a medicine bag and proceeded to pulp the leaves to a liquid. Pouring the noisome concoction into a vial, he handed it to me. Not wishing to appear effete, I drank readily (if without enthusiasm) and a more disgusting flavor is hard to imagine. However, my pains left me entirely within seconds, as did any remaining intoxication.

He told me that he had developed this antidote so that he could recover his sobriety quickly in order to treat unexpected patients on feast nights, when young bravos are prone to fighting. With a wink, he also confided that those same young men were quite fond of his "Philter of the Snake", an unlikely combination of bugbane, three maidenhair fern and a duskglow vine, which aided them in impressing the ladies of the village.

Please write and tell me you are well.

                Your Jonas

                Letters of Jonas 2

                Dearest Allyssa,

I was overjoyed to receive your letter, but dismayed yet again over the words your father had for me. My resolve to learn pharmacopoeial skills to make me a prestigious consultant and worthy in your hand in his eyes has only redoubled.

My education proceeds, as my host allows me to observe his treatments and preparations. Today a party of hunters came. They were preparing for a long expedition to the Icy Plains. Apparently these are as frigid as they sound, as the group was dressed in warm furs, even though these same men face the frozen avenues of Halas in no more than a kilt and a pair of boots.

I was reminded of just how chill this was as I was sent out to the shops to find certain leaves and skins (cold enough to wrap myself in uncured skins). When I returned, my mentor arranged these on his bench where a couple of jars had been already opened. I watched with interest as he proceeded.

First he took out a small amount of bugbane and added three lucerne and a duskglow vine to create what he referred to as "Potion of the Rhino." Apparently this brew enhances the strength of those that drink it.

By simply exchanging the benzoin with Mullein, Somehow it armors the drinker against disease.

Then vox's dust and two eyebright leaves were mixed with two grains of cententialspore. The resulting "Serpent's Conviction " was apparently to allow one to see better. Certainly hunting in these climes is always dangerous, and better vision will help.

I am sure that the skills I am learning will serve me well, and look forward eagerly to your next letter.

                Your Jonas

                Letters of Jonas 3 Options

                Dearest Allyssa,

I was saddened to hear of your sister's accident, and fervently hope that she is well again when this missive reaches you. It is shameful that the sunken portions of the dock area have never been fenced or railed for the safety of passersby. I saw no end of injuries like hers in my practice, and expect that there will be many more.

I am doing very well, and have found the cold mornings much more endurable since my patron instructed me in the creation of the "Effusion of E'Ci" solution from a small amount of bugbane added to three benzoin and a duskglow vine. It is amazing how preferable this is to the usual barbarian method of dealing with cold (which is to drink one's self to a semi-stupor, beyond caring of the weather).

Recently I managed to reverse things and teach my host a lesson in medicine, when a small child was attacked by a giant wooly spider and poisoned before the nearby patrol could arrive and dispatch it. The "Antidote" he made that I mentioned previously was not sufficient to neutralize the arachnid's venom and he lacked the ingredients for a stronger brew. However, my mundane approach of lancing and draining the bite to draw the poison made the difference (I doubt it would have done alone, so strong is the bite of that creature) and the child lived, much to the appreciation of her father (who nearly cleft me with an axe when I made the incision).

In gratitude he showed me how to blend bugbane, three allspice, and a duskglow vine to make the "Effusion of Solusek" specific against heat and flame. It was impressively effective, allowing him to stand in the flames of a bonfire without harm even as his clothing scorched and burned.

Please give my best to your sister and mother, and my respects to your father.

                Your Jonas

                Letters of Jonas 4

                Dearest Alyssa,

Fortified by Effusion of E'Ci potions, I have begun exploring more of the area, traveling with hunting parties as they go out to bring in the food for the village. And such beasts they hunt, mammoths as big as houses, white leopards with black spots, creatures I had only read about and sometimes not even believed.

Hunting the mammoth, especially, is a difficult undertaking. One party had a novel approach, taking along Gnomish Boils solution, they surprised a cow mammoth at night (which the solution turned nearly to day), in a scene of slaughter that was too much for me. Another group, however, was even more amazing, they went swimming for fish, using Aquatic Haunt (bugbane, three woundwart and a sage leaf) to remain underwater for incredible lengths of time, with no apparent need to breathe. Once again I was amazed at the hardiness of these people, as they literally had to cut holes in the ice in order to reach the water and swim!

With any luck, this letter finds your sister well, and you as well as always. As always, I wish you and yours (even your father) my best, and hope that I may soon be able to return.

                Your Jonas

                Letters of Jonas 5

                Dearest Alyssa,

Truly I was overjoyed to hear that your sister has recovered, apparently without permanent harm. She is, as you, of fundamentally healthy nature, and it served her well in her recovery. I hope that she will be more careful in the future, however.

Myself, life has settled into something of a routine, even the exotic becomes familiar with time I am finding. In an effort to see something new and different, I went seeking that shyest of creatures, the air elemental. Although an invader of our plane much like the fire elementals of Lavastorm, it is not aggressive but retiring, not even visible except when defending itself.

To find it, I prevailed upon my host to show me the way of combining violet tri-tube sap, two eyebright leaves, and two chips of katuka bark to create a potion of clear sight. This substance makes the normally invisible visible, and with it I was able to see the flighty but insubstantial sprites. They seemed to be very amused with themselves, playing tag from one side of the Icy Plains to the other, almost like children.

However, I also witnessed a most primitive spectacle that day, fortified by another of my host's concoctions made of bugbane, two tri-fern leaves and two curuloth, one of the hunters wrestled a small bear with his bare hands. The Titans Potion certainly seemed effective, as he won rather handily, growing to the size of this "small" bear was 3 times even his own rather impressive normal size.

I found the elementals to be better company, especially after partaking of Gulon's Impunity (made from blue vervain bulb, two pinches of ground figwort and two sprigs of birthwort) which allowed me, believe it or not, to sport through the air with ease, joining in their games. However, when the fun was over I used Copal's Demise (vox's dust, two grains of hemlock powder and two pinches of mandrake root) to dissipate the magical effect, so that I could return on my own feet.

As always, I await the day when we may be together again.

                Your Jonas

                Letters of Jonas 6

                Dearest Alyssa,

I miss you as much as you me. I believe that my time here grows short and I will be able to soon join you.

I have finally noticed that my shamatic friend uses different vials according to the strength of the potion he makes. The more expensive the vial, the more potent the potion that can be put in it. Then there seems to be some extra herbs that also have a consistency to them, and change as the potency of the concoction he is making increases.

For most potions, he uses the following items in order of potency: Sticklewort, Vox's Dust, Violet Tri-Tube Sap, Blue Vervain Bulb, Betherium Bark, Bugbane, Dragonwart, Valerian Root, Balm Leaves and Blade Leaf. Also, for these, whenever he uses Dragonwart of Valerian Root he uses a noxious blood from some particularly hearty goblins. When he uses Balm Leaves he also uses an essence that can only be found from some of the deadliest zombies. Finally, when he uses Blade Leaf he uses a powder that I have yet to be able to identify, and he will not share with me.

For potions that cure disease and poison, if have seen him use some of the same herbs, but the list seems slightly different. It is Sticklewort, Vox's Dust, Violet Tri-Tube Sap, Blue Vervain Bulb, Arnworth, Berterine, Mugwart, Bistort, Stinging Nettle, and Wormwood. He pairs Mugewart with spores from living mushrooms, Bistort with blood from some bipedal lizards, and Stinging Nettle with what he says is blood from talking rats. With Wormwood, he uses some of that same powder that he uses with Balm Leaves.

As always, I await the day when we may be together again.

                Your Jonas

At the same time, he had an infusion that was in all of the different levels that he gave to the shaman as their rank would infer. For this he used two sickle leaves and two Yerbhimba.

And for the scouts that would be sneaking about, he used two burdock and two horehound. For the ones that had to be particularly sneaky he added some liquid from a being made all of slime and used a smooth vial.

                Hastily Written List

Gate: Simple Potion Vial, Yebamante, Blade Leaf, 2 Heliotrope, 3 Measures of Prism Grains.
Army Ant Potion: Fine Potion Vial, Valerian Root, 2 Feverfew, 2 Damiana, Robust Shadow Essence.

In my spare time I like to sew. Taking my primary into skill into consideration I have made some potion bags that allow for easier travel.

Foldable Medicine Bag: High Quality Bear Skin, Silver Ribbon.
Foldable Bearskin Potion Bag: Thick Grizzly Bear Skin, Silk Cord, Gold Ribbon.

                Liquid Power

One must use any method for an advantage, and for those who may not be the best with a sword, this is doubly true.

So for that, I came up with these philters to broaden the power of those who take the power of magic over the power of the blade.

There are five potency levels for each of these, and you will find that you will not even be able to drink the higher potency ones unless you yourself have more power. Each potency has a specific vial that must be used along with a specific herb, the highest potency even has an extra component. For the lowest potency you will use a makeshift vial. For the next potency level you must use a simple vial. The top three potency levels actually all use a runed potion vial.

For the herb, you will need to use Larkspur, Vinuk, Blade Leaf, Wormwood and Yebamante. This is also the order of the potency level of the herbs. For the philters with blade leaf, you will have to use the essence from powerful shades. For Wormwood you will need to use some of the very rare powder of ro, and for Yebamante you will even need to use two.

With that as a base, you will need four additional herbs for each type of power you would like to influence.

Fire: Figwort, Agrimony, and 2 Lucerne

Ice: Storm Cloud, Agrimony, and 2 Benzoin

Magic: Elderberry, Dhea, and 2 Mandrake Root

Poison: Storm Cloud, Briar Thistle, and 2 Night Shade

Disease: Aloe, Briar Thistle, and 2 Birthwort

Beneficial Spells: Aloe, Clover, and 2 Sage

Range: Pickleberry Extract, Briar Thistle, and 2 Nettle Creeper

Efficiency: Pickleberry Extract, Briar Thistle, and 2 Blue Nightwort

Duration: Pickleberry Extract, Briar Thistle, and 2 Marsh Algae

Use these philters and you will become feared by all who know you.

                Lost Adventurer's Alchemical Notes Options

The alchemical profession is one that is well respected throughout the world, our potions bring healing to the sick, help to focus the magical energies of casters, and if the right herbs and chemicals were used, could even grant the drinker abilities they would not normally have.

It has long been rumored that our ancestors were able to craft potions that were able to affect small groups of people concentrated in a small area. This process has been unknown for centuries. . . Unknown until now!

I've managed a breakthrough in my research! I believe I've found a way to craft our potions to have a larger effect to those around them. The solution was not an easy one to find, especially considering it requires a different mode of thinking.

It seems that in the recent discovery of the various dungeons across Norrath, several new classifications of herbs and chemicals were uncovered. These herbs and chemicals are very potent. Combine these with a new method of processing the herbs, and I've been able to bottle what I consider a "mist".

These mists, when uncorked, will encompass a small area, enhancing the air in the immediate vicinity, granting all those who breathe the air, the effect of the potions. The "mists" are a bit weaker than drinking a normal potion, due to the potency factor, but it is a great way to give various benefits to those around you.

Here is a list of the mists that I've managed to create thus far:

                Breathless Mist -
                1 Fine Potion Vial
                1 Valerian Root
                3 Woundwart
                1 Sage Leaf
                1 Robust Shadow Essence

                Weightless Mist -
                1 Fine Potion Vial
                1 Valerian Root
                1 Figwort
                1 Comfrey
                2 Birthwart
                1 Robust Shadow Essence

                Mist of the Wolf -
1 Fine Potion Vial or Gemmed Potion Vial
1 Valerian Root or Balm Leaves
                1 Fenugreek
                1 Birthwart
                2 Measures of Wolf Blood
1 Robust Shadow Essence or Exceptional Shissar Blood
Sabraaz The 70 Iksar Shaman of The Tribunal

The Art of Delicate Throwing Things

                  By Hiloan O'Yviania

Sometimes one actually needs breakable objects. It could be to deliver flaming oil, to send poison a distance, or to silence an annoying husband.

With that in mind, I have a method of making different types of throwing vials. These will be made in sets of varying quantites. Often it will seem like much clay was wasted, but this is necessary to get just the right amount of friability to the vial.

Primitive Friable Potion Vial - Simple Friable Potion Vial Sketch and a Small Block of Clay

Crude Friable Potion Vial - Simple Friable Potion Vial Sketch, a Block of Clay, and four Small Blocks of Clay

Rough Friable Potion Vial - Friable Potion Vial Sketch, Large Block of Clay and a Small Block of Clay

Makeshift Friable Potion Vial - Friable Potion Vial Sketch, and four Large Blocks of Clay

Simple Friable Potion Vial - Friable Potion Vial Sketch, Huge Block of Clay and three Large Blocks of Clay

Plain Friable Potion Vial - Friable Potion Vial Sketch, Huge Block of Clay, five Large Blocks of Clay, a Block of Clay and a Small Block of Clay

Smoothe Friable Potion Vial - Advanced Friable Potion Vial Sketch and a Huge Block of Clay

Fine Friable Potion Vial - Advanced Friable Potion Vial Sketch, two Huge Blocks of Clay, a Large Block of Clay and a Block of Clay

Gemmed Friable Potion Vial - Advanced Friable Potion Vial Sketch, two Huge Blocks of Clay and Gem Powder

Runed Friable Potion Vial - Advanced Friable Potion Vial Sketch, two Huge Blocks of Clay, and a Rune Sketch

Sometimes you need a better grip, so these formed versions have a good spot with which to hold the vial.

Primitive Formed Potion Vial - Simple Formed Potion Vial Sketch and a Small Block of Clay,

Crude Formed Potion Vial - Simple Formed Potion Vial Sketch, a Block of Clay and two Small Blocks of Clay

Rough Formed Potion Vial - Formed Potion Vial Sketch and three Large Blocks of Clay

Makeshift Formed Potion Vial - Formed Potion Vial Sketch, and six Large Blocks of Clay

Simple Formed Potion Vial - Formed Potion Vial Sketch, a Huge Block of Clay, two Large Blocks of Clay and a Block of Clay

Plain Formed Potion Vial - Formed Potion Vial Sketch, two Huge Blocks of Clay and a Large Block of Clay

Smoothe Formed Potion Vial - Advanced Formed Potion Vial Sketch, Huge Block of Clay, two Large Blocks of Clay and a Block of Clay

Fine Formed Potion Vial - Advanced Formed Potion Vial Sketch, two Huge Blocks of Clay, and five Large Blocks of Clay

Gemmed Formed Potion Vial - Advanced Formed Potion Vial Sketch, two Huge Blocks of Clay, three Large Blocks of Clay and Gem Powder

Runed Formed Potion Vial - Advanced Formed Potion Vial Sketch three Huge Block of Clay and a Formed Rune Sketch

To fire these, you will need to use firing sheets according to the quality for the resultant vials.

Firing Sheet for Primitive and Crude vials

Quality Firing Sheet for Rough, Makeshift, Simple and Plain vials

High Quality Firing Sheet for Smoothe, Fine, Gemmed and Runed vials

Sometimes one also needs more range. To accomplish this, one must make the vial round.

The Delicate Art of Throwing Things

                  by Jorlan Hegeway

Those of us who are educated in the art of alchemy have always had a limitation placed on our work. Sure, we can affect all sorts of changes on people, friend or foe. We toil to discover new ways to use the items that nature provides us that sometimes dazzle even the most jaded adventurer.

Making a potion that can turn your enemy into a toad is difficult, but convincing him to drink it is even more problematic.

One of the big advantages of working on the Queen of Thorns is that we have gathered some of the most knowledgeable and experienced specialists on Norrath into a single location. The trend in the past has always been to keep to ourselves, especially we alchemists.

Well, recently I was speaking with Hiloan about something a few days back and she offhandedly mentioned that some of my kinfolk had been destroying her work. Apparently they've taken to having mug-throwing contests, the winner being the one that gets the most ale on the opponent. I hear that knocking the opponent out with the mug tends to make it easier to win.

That gave me an idea, and I've just finished the first batch, so I thought I would write it down.

It turns out that if you use the proper ingredients and put them into the proper container, you can deliver a potion to your enemy without having to get too darn close to him.

The first thing you'll need to find is a vial. You may need to find a friend that works with clay to get the proper vial made. Just like regular potions, you will need to consider the power of the potion you are putting in the vial. The herbs used to increase the power of the potions are slightly different for throwing potions. You will need Cicino, Sticklewort, Vox's Dust, Belan, Violet Tri-Tube Sap, Blue Vervain Bulb, Betherium Bark and Bugbane in order of potency. My experimentation sowed that Dragonwart worked equally well for two more that are even more powerful. For the eighth and the ninth most powerful, I found that some sludge believe it or not was also needed. I have not quite figured out how to make the most powerful one, something is missing. I even dream about it. Something about the gods that are related to Ro, but it just will not clarify for me.

Then gather up some Acaana, Yellow Rheum, and two doses of Flamewort. As you well know, this combination of items is a bit dangerous, so be careful. Work them together and place them into the vial and then toss it at your enemies. You'll find it to be quite effective.

I have only just begun to delve into this idea and I suspect that before long I'll master a few others along these lines. I am fairly certain that I can achieve a cold effect using Seathorn and Yellow Rheum as a base but changing the active ingredient to something like Suranie. And perhaps if I replace the Acaana with Angurth I can use that as a base for other effects. Perhaps Bitterwood might hamper the subject's movements. Then simply replacing the Bitterwood with Arroweed (retaining the Angurth and Yellow Rheum) I should be able to stun the subject. Also Bulb Lotus, Fire Spore, and Stinging Crystal will be particularly vile.

I am certain that other combinations will work to create more effective versions of these basic concoctions. I hope to have the chance to work on them soon.

                  The Liquid Mask

It is simplicity! In a runed vial, simply use fangorth and a sample of the "meat" of the race that you would like to mimic.
