Well, it's official - I'm definitely insane.
Many moons ago, when I began playing EQ, I started working on tradeskill stuff - my first foray was into Jewelcraft. I played (and still play) a barbarian shaman, so there was no particularly sane reason for this. I just thought it would be neat. Well, I got myself to 69, got frustrated with the amount of money I'd spent, and sold off my jewelers kit.
Shortly after that, I got Fal to the magic level 25, and dumped more money into alchemy. Sure, I didn't think it would be overly useful, but once I got to the SoW potion trivial it sort of went onto the back burner. (Today my alchemy stands at 96, mostly because my guild was heading into HoT and the stat potions had just had their negatives removed.) I shrugged and went on playing.
Then I decided to work on baking. You know, making food that I'd actually need? Fish rolls were my first choice, just as Luclin came out, and I trivialed that food, and hung up my apron. I didn't really need any more than that, did I?
But for whatever reason, I grabbed ahold of pottery, and got myself to mastery in the standard short amount of time. I went back every so often to try and make some poison vials, but even with loads of zombie skins, the effort didn't seem worth it.
Somewhere in the midst of all this, the GM trophys were released. I oooooh'd and aaaaah'd at the stats, and the summonable bag, and decided right then and there that I would get myself a trophy. So I scanned EQTraders, looking for the tradeskill that would take the least amount of time and effort to reach the mid 200's, and settled on brewing. Yes, I hear you snickering now, but back then I thought, "I can spend some money on making MHB's, how hard could it be?"
And then... and then I was making QAT's, and making something approaching a profit off them in my guild. I started hunting for tea leaves, merchant mining and offering to buff and/or pay people in EK so I could get more leaves. And I farmed the fungus fields in Kaladim to make the constitutionals, getting an amazing *six* skill-ups in 60 combines! But after going back to MHB's, I got to 231 with a great many combines and growling. So I looked around and thought:
"I haven't done tailoring yet!"
A good RL friend of mine (the one that got me addicted to EQ in the first place) had dumped on me a load of silk swatches, superb and flawless rockhopper hides, as well as other tailoring essentials. And without really giving any thought, I bought a collapsed sewing kit and began making raw silk armor. Then cured. Then handmade backpacks, which was a mistake, as I only had one available inventory slot and ended up giving most of them to a good EQ friend. So tailored quivers was next up on the trivial list, and I merrily headed to EK once again, this time to slaughter spiders and cats, all in the name of tailoring.
And then it hit me. Without a second thought, I'd jumped from one tradeskill (that I was close to GM'ing) to another that was definitely far more difficult! Never mind that I'd been given a helping hand, never mind that in those heady hours of raw and cured silk, I was getting skill-ups averaging 2 out of every 3 combines.
No, even though I knew from these boards just how difficult the tailors path was, I went ahead and jumped into it anyways.
I've finally caught the bug. After a checkered and not-so-long career, I'm finally a tradeskiller. I know some things, and yet there is still so much to learn. But if I can blithely jump into a new tradeskill - even knowing the agony awaiting me - then I must really belong here, instead of checking for recipes and chuckling at people's frustrations with the RNG.
I'm finally home.
Thank you all for being here for me when I finally realized it.
