  • Foraging (darn it).

200 minotaur hero brew combines without a skill-up? Hah! I laugh in the face of the RNG! I have the patience to win this one.

Left my evocation skill in the dust 15 levels ago? Not a problem. If I've got to Flame Lick 'a skeleton's corpse' for a few hours, I can handle it.

But foraging. How in the world does anyone ever get to 200 in foraging?

I play fairly infrequently. I moved to test server recently for a variety of reasons, but with a planned focus on tradeskills. The absolute number one reason I moved to test was because I could create a character that started with a forage skill of 130. I figured that starting at 130 it shouldn't be that big a deal to keep the skill maxed.

7 levels later I was at skill 139. After the first couple of levels I made foraging my absolute number one priority. I ALWAYS watch the button and click it whenever it's available. I just can't get any darn skill increases.

So, this weekend I know I'm going to watch the British Open on TV. I logged in, parked my ranger in EK, and other than a few forays after spiders during commercials, did nothing but click the forage key for at least a few hours. Lots of tea leaves. Lots of Plains pebbles. End of weekend: skill 140. 1 point.

I know I should hot-key it to a movement button, but it's personal now. Why is foraging so much harder to raise than any other skill?

Forage for rangers maxes at 200 at level 39 or 40, right? I think i was well into my 50s before forage maxed out, and i hit forage pretty much every time it comes up.
Its just a long refresh. Not exactly sure what stat the skillups are based on, if any at all. Its usually not till your late 50s that any one stat even gets close to maxing, so youre never running with your best chances.

My ranger maxed foraging somewhere in her mid 40s, and I am compulsive. I hit forage the instant it ungreys, no matter what. yes, that means during combat I hit autoattack/forage/autoattack. Sadly, she's 51 now and I'm still compulsive, I'll stand up from medding to hit forage. I swear I'm keeping half the tradeskillers out there supplied in fruit/berries/mushrooms. Just wish they would buy my blasted roots. And who is it that keeps buying up all the pods of water and rabbit meat my merchants have to eat? /boggles

Level 52 ranger and my forage isn't maxed either. I hit it all the time. I have loads of weird foraged stuff from every zone I cross, some of it worthwile and some of it just annoying(feathers anyone?I swear there ought to be birds on Luclin...or evidence of a really BIG pillowfight!). I actually saw my forage go up a point last week! I almost fell down in shock.

(roots...I use mine to prepare fish, as the fishbone darts are actually selling on my trader at the moment. Although, I saw someone advertising them for an unreasonable(profitless, due to the price of celandine.) price earlier, so maybe that market is toast now too. sigh)

Soooooooooooooooooo glad I got my druid's forage up back when you could still get skillups while attacking and sitting.

You can put things in the bag and NOT sell them.

Embarassingly enough, so did I. I just didn't realize that I would get a skillup even if I couldn't forage until the stop attack/forage/start attack was habitual. And I never did notice it when sitting.

Oh, I know, but they are priced high enough I really never expect them to sell, so if someone wants to pay 20pp for a stack of foraged water they can, I just don't understand it :P

Oh, and for a while I was using the roots for darts too, but they are sortof pricey and sell intermittently. Now that my husband is playing his monk again though I should probably make a bunch, though since fishing long since maxed out I think I'll buy the fish rather then go fish, I'd rather spend the time brewing right now.

PSSSTTT <whispers to Xenephex> You can train it up at the guild trainer. It's WELL worth the plat.

Honestly, I very much sympathize, I have a level 40 Ranger with a forge skill of 198 that I bought 190-195 for, the rest are earned the hard way. lets you know how much farming I've done. When ever I hear someone go off about the price of forged goods and how they are going o go make a character and break the market to get even with us, I just laugh. Forging, like trying to GM something, it definitely one of those things that you just don't understand how much work there is until you try.

I tied my forage key to my forward key at about level 20 or so when I realized how much I would need forage. I maxed it at 200 pretty easily that way. At the same time I tied sense heading to the same key, and it went up as well.

I have since taken forage off that key and just forage manually. I keep sense heading on it though - nice for my alts and its always good to see where you are going.

Hadn't thought of that one. I'll start doing that. I DO stand up to forage while medding though.

I would have to say my foraging is only in the compulsive stage right now, but I can see it rapidly progressing to obsessive.

Thanks for all the replies. This was just a rant, and I'm well aware that the biggest problem is that it pops so infrequently, but I have to say that it really does appear to me that skill-ups per click on foraging seem much more rare than on any other skill, in addition to the infrequency.

Ohhhh... that is so tempting. And it would be cheaper now than it would be later. I don't really have a lot of plat though, and I think I'd like to 'beat' this on my own. Thanks for the information, though.

Could you tie 'begging' to the hot key as well? or would the forage item on the cursor (if there was one) affect the begging?

Being a monk, begging works like a taunt for me. Not certain if a druid/ranger wants to be taunting during the fight -- but I turn off my autoattack and forage during fighting.

Not certain if you would get any items from begging (I never have) but it's another skill to go up

my alt, a 36 Vah shir warrior, has begged a dagger out of a goblins hand in HHK, mid fight. And has begged a mace out of a Craig giants hand, mid fight in DL. Should have seen the comments from my party members. Next time it happens, i'm gonna screen shot it.
Still makes me laugh when I think about it.

Begging generates aggro when it fails, but not when it succeeds. It is the one skill that you don't want to go up if you plan to use it as ghetto-taunt. Don't practice it, just use it when you need it.

Begging actually works???? It's not broken?????

I'm at 190 skill and I've never EVER had it work... Not one stinking copper, no weapons, Nothing!!!

                            /sigh
Setup my hotkey to do the following

                            /attack off
                            /doability 3 (Beg)
                            /doability 4 (Kick)
                            /attack on

Usually I get to kick 2 times to every beg.

                              Tie forage/sense heading to l/r

I don't have forage but I tied my g/f's sense heading/forage skills to her left/right arrows. Every time you hit left sense heading ever time you hit right forage. Maxed in like a week

You can do this with any skill, as a monk I tied my disarm/intimidation skill to my left/right keys while fighting. Just put it on the second page of the buttons since I've died 3 times already (trying) to disarm/intimidate merchants

                              Good luck
