  • 8th shawl hell

Don't know if anyone else has encountered this new bug, but as of the patch a week or two ago, I've been randomly crashing to desktop - it's not a link death, EQ actually totally disapears and I occasionally get a Windows error message telling me illegal opperation. This particular bug seemed to be linked to going into EQ window mode at first, but now it's not even waiting for me to go into window mode.

It became particularly fun for me this evening while trying to do my 8th shawl walk - just getting the walk to happen had been rather murderous to begin with - most of the guild is KOS to coldain since we've joined sides with the giants (and easy/lazy faction is slaughtering coldain of course), there were some problems I've already ranted with on the Dain himself and for the coup-de-grace, I had about 4 or 5 walks get cancelled due to someone else having either just done it rescently, or one time, another guild being a bit faster on the scramble to help the general out.

But this evening was to be my walk - we had an adequate number of non-kos folks on, the general was up and IC was empty except for one guy keeping an eye out for the mob for the eyepatch quest.

So of course, the @#$% crash bug was EXTREMELY aggresive with me.

Over the course of the walk, I crashed to desktop out of the blue EIGHT TIMES - I finally got to the point that I had to leave the walk and just hang out at the gnomes and pray to my RL god, the computer gods and even a few EQ gods (including Absor and the RNG - what the heck, couldn't hurt) that I didn't crash again right as the Avatar spawned - it was even more stressful then the 5th and 7th final combines AND my BPP put together - EEP!

Finally, it looked like EQ had finished crashing me - that was only because it had another treat in store for me.

I don't know if this was a one time peice of bad luck that happened just to increase my stress levels by a few more factors, or if this is a new bug for the shawl walk, but the General got stuck on the land somewhere just past ToFS - nothing was working to dislodge him - folks were trying to pull him, hail him - you name it - but whatever the appeal was of that patch of snow, he was staying there.

We of course /petitioned and /bugged the heck out of the situation and of course there wasn't a single GM/guide on the server. Finally, thank god, he just unstuck himself and started on his merry way again.

Happily, I didn't crash and the turn in went smoothly - I am now a proud owner of the 8th shawl! (Which of course means that an uber set of SK only shoulders should be dropping sometime for me in the next week or two  )

No more EQ for me till they fix the crash bug.

      Cigar -

      I suggest a few things...

Run Windows Update. I'm guessing you're missing a patch or two to the Operating System.

Don't upgrage DirectX until you check to make sure your video card and sound card will work. And double check the dirvers. If all is happy with the video and sound card support, DirectX 9 is a happy thing.

Defrag your Hard Drive. Really. You'd be amazed at how much this helps performance, especially since Windows loves to swap data to the drive for "Virtual Memory." If your disk is highly fragmented, this makes the swapping task very difficult for the OS.

Depending on your version of Windows, either uninstall unused / broken applications from the control panel or from something like CleanSweep. Saving space and cleaning out the Windows Registry are happy things.

Do a "Through File Check" in the EQ patcher. Perhaps something is damaged.

If you use texture-caching, turn it off. Delete the old cache files, and re-enable texture caching. Corrupted cache files are often troublesome.

And if all else fails, delete the eqoptions.opt file and reset all your options for the game from the Login screen.

I'm not saying that any of these is a surefire cure for what ails your EQ experience, but none of it can really hurt, and many of them might actually solve the problem.

        Congratulations on your shawl!

The but with the General getting stuck is commented on in a sticky thread in the Quests forum. The trick to getting him moving again is to "crowd" him (ie stand almost on top of him).

          I have the same problem.

It usually happens if I leave myself at character select for anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.

I can usually log in, but the instant I zone, boom. Crash to desktop. Sometimes, I'll have been online for an hour or so, zoning several times back and forth.. be running and doing something and I crash. No errors, my eq screen just totally disappears.

I hadn't thought about defrag.. think I'll have to try that tonight.

KK - will give that a shot.

            Tried already but no luck.

Not sure what you're saying here? I'm proficient enough not to cause problems but not quite proficient enough to fix something that wasn't caused by something myself or someone else did?

Do a "Through File Check" in the EQ patcher. Perhaps something is damaged.
Banged that out after the disk defrag.

No clue were or what the cache files are called?

NP - am willing to try anything reasonable - figured if I couldn't get any descent input here then I'd just delete EQ and reinstall - really don't want to though - SoL was a 16 hour download from hell for me - whimper.

CS, they're all of the files in the EQ directory with the *.txc extension.

You don't even need to turn cacheing off before you delete them as your system builds them automatically as it needs them.

This also speeds up zoning times for some folks, and when you get those weird graphics glitches where wolves look striped get's fixed by doing this as well.

Perhaps I didn't say that properly.

Essentially, I meant to "trim the fat." Get rid of any application that doesn't behave well with others. Anything that causes your system to lock-up or crash after you run it. Anything you don't use. Any shareware that did not behave like you expected.

Why? Sometimes applications replace valid system files with outdated versions, or don't play well and leave random junk in memory.

Example: I know that I have had one or two applications that were troublesome. My ISP requires certain software to connect to their servers, and they auto-matically install an Internet Explorer add-on. This add-on caused all sorts of problems with Windows until I removed it. You might have similar things happening in your case.

Example: Used to be that if I played Heros of Might and Magic III, I had to reboot my computer before playing EQ or crash after the second or third time I zoned. Turns out that the game didn't clear video memory properly at exit. A patch from 3DO fixed the problem.

Look for those sorts of patterns. Then, either patch the offending software, or remove it from your system.

Updating the Operating System can also fix problems. I know things work much more smoothly using DirectX 9 than with DirectX 8.1, at least for my hardware.

Maintence (Defragging, scandisk, removing old applications, etc.) can make your computing life much, much easier.

Ahh, OK - yeah, I'm very good about cleaning the junk out of my computer - have already had that kind of stuff bite me on the tail one time too many.

The problems with the random crashing to desktop as well as not being to log onto the Sony message boards started back on the 6/11 patch - although at that time, I'd only crash to desk if I was in Window mode.

Then this last patch when they claimed they had made the zones more stable, they had expanded the crash to desk feature from only when I was in Window mode to any time it darned well pleased and EVERY time I went into window mode.

I just deleted all of my .txc files so lets pray that's the issue.

I guess while we're covering the new features, has anyone else also noticed that the game no longer remembers your clip plane settings? I used to keep it at 5% (because I knew about the 0/100% feature) but now I find that I've simply got to go in and reset it every time I log in, and even sometimes when I've zoned, anyway?

As much as I hate to sugguest it to someone on a dial-up connection, perhaps it is time to simply reinstall from scratch?

Whimper, I know - I'm making one last ditch attempt at getting help from Sony before I go through that fun again.

Won't have any other choice though - after deleting the txc files the other day, the @#$% game won't go more than 5 minutes without crashing to desk.
