Yes in the past I have occasionally shot back flippant answers to new/confused/bewildered smiths. Normally later on you'll probably feel bad about it anyway so why do it??

We can but hope most people DO carefully read the FAQ but a few don't and we shouldn't beat them down for it.
    *Sigh*

Actually, the problem wasn't that he hadn't read the FAQ. He actually implied he has in his post. The problem is that his post implies that we are keeping secrets from the public (although in a very nice manner), whether that was his intent or not, which is highly insulting. We aren't outdated information. If someone knew that making cultural worked for other races (which it doesn't) and didn't post about it, asking for a confirmation isn't going to make such a person want to post that information. On the other hand, the people who HAVE given the information that no, cultural does NOT let members of other races make that cultural are going to be annoyed, at the very least, that they aren't believed. I know I was. It's a Lose/Lose situation to make that kind of a thread.

Really though, that's the general problem with all those "Are you SURE it works that way" kind of posts. Yes, we're 100%, absolutely sure it works that way. Otherwise it wouldn't be thrown into a Frequently Asked Questions thread. If you still have to ask if we're sure knowing all that, it wouldn't matter what we said because we still wouldn't be believed. I have nothing against the guy, but I really feel it would have been better for him to try it himself instead of posting.

Like I mentioned earlier, it would have been really really easy for him to try an easy-to-do recipe *first* to get his answer if he feels he's getting conflicting messages from two reputable sources. If it fails/succeeds, great! He can do it! If it DNCs, he can resell the components. He's obviously got a character to do it without having to make a new one, he has the faction for it (assuming), he's got the time to do it, and he wouldn't have to wait.

You know, when I fail to read the first five items in a document I claim to have read... and then have it pointed out to me, possibly with a couple of twitting words, such as "slick," "sugarlumps," or anything else that doesn't outright call me a darn fool...

I'm glad to have an answer. If the person didn't care just a little, they wouldn't be giving me the answer when I already had the resources in front of me and was too lazy or careless to read them.

Giving someone an answer in a speedy and correct manner IS being kind. If we restrict the privilege of giving answers only to those who are properly sweet and submissive, then we're going to have about five people posting here. If someone's enough of a man (or woman) to suck it up when they go through 250 combines without a single! freaking! skillup! then I find it hard to believe that they'd get their widdle feelings hurt by being teased for missing the obvious.

I think if you go back and read the post without anger in your heart you will read an entirely different idea. Stop, take 10 deep breaths. Read it again. He didn't imply anyone was keeping secrets, he implied that no one had checked *because* the FAQ and all posts were so adamant (he even implied that *he* didn't believe it could be done). He was asking if anyone had actually tried recently as a troll to make ogre cultural. Now does that sound evil? Nah. Sounds like something that wouldn't work, but does he deserve hatred because he suggested something improbable? Just think about it, HAS anyone actually tried lately? The fact that someone mentioned he should try, proves that it wasn't that outlandish of an idea. And if it had worked (despite all expectations otherwise), would the hatred have been rescinded? Thanks would be given, but it would already be too late as a valued member of the community would have been driven away because his idea brought out the worst in us.

Granted I don't think it would work, but ya know what..I'm sure gonna try and make something with my husband's troll tomorrow just to see.

Another point: Quick responses are appreciated...demeaning terms are not. That response could have been made even faster (by miliseconds of course) if that one term were left out. Would have made a world of difference to the thread and the point would still have been made by that post and by the following posts. You'll note our beloved Denmother likely had the same feelings towards the repeat (although worded differently) of an already well answered question, yet she managed to not be sarcastic. We should all aspire to be like her.

I'm not at all saying that I'm not guilty of resorting to sarcasm to deal with people at times and for the most part I regret when I do so. I'm just saying that I recognize that failing in myself. It is not their fault when I lose control, it is mine.

          We keep no secrets here.

          Rule #4 in the <a href=http://mboards.eqtraders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7>Visitors Corner</a> (which everyone is <b>supposed to read</b>) is:

The reasons behind the FAQs is to prevent the same questions from being asked for the <b>skillionth</b> time. A lot of work and effort has gone into the main site, the FAQs, and the Dead Horse to help people educate themselves; however, it's <b>not</b> going to be spoonfed to you, people.

A word of advice to visitors to this site: Read. Take a few minutes to read and navigate through the <a href=http://www.eqtraders.com>Main Site</a>. Take 2 minutes to read the FAQs, to use the ALT + F function to find keywords and read the context therein. If it isnt in the FAQ, do a <a href=http://mboards.eqtraders.com/phpBB2/search.php">Search</a> on your subject. If you dont find it then, feel free to post your question. If you did everything else first, you'll more than likely be spared a sarcastic, scything remark <img src=http://www.boomspeed.com/sinuuyanea/dcrazz.gif alt="My favorite kind...">

But, most of all, <b>use your brain and <i>THINK</i></b>. <img src=http://www.boomspeed.com/sinuuyanea/dcrazz.gif alt="Try to use a little logic, for crying out loud!">

Meh, I'm just annoyed that although he was in the best position to answer his own question that he didn't bother to try. It would have been a better use of everyone's time than waiting for a response, where a large portion of the rest of us would have to hustle a possibly new character over with the cash, and try a simple recipe, then come back and reply with a "No, it doesn't work," assuming that someone cared enough to try. Of course, this is coming from a biased point of view where I can afford to experiment with reasonably expensive tradeskill supplies. Although granted, I'm not usually as irritated--I had already edited down that post because I felt I was being offensive (editing within minutes of the initial posting doesn't show up as editing)--but I guess I didn't edit it enough. :P

I do not think "Slick" is a derrogatory name or anything of the sort. I saw nothing out of line. If he/she was offended by such thing, perhaps he/she felt foolish for asking the question. What everyone needs to understand is that there are no stupid questions...only stupid people that ask the same question over and over and over and over...so please, do not make fun of the questions that people ask. Make fun of the people that ask them.

                  "Jeez, I crack myself up."

I think the original poster of the thread needs to lighten up.

Did Will Smith flip out and start yelling everytime he was called "Slick" in MiB?

Cripes, when I want to insult someone, I will let loose with at least one barrel, if not both.

And swearing to forever leave a messageboard because one of the regulars call you slick is MIND BOGGLING.

There is a fatal flaw in your logic. People who are too (whatever) to read the recipe pages and posted how too's are also going to be too (same whatever) to read the FAQ's, walkthroughs, and Dead Horse. I once saw a sign with a store's return policy next to the store's customer service desk. On it was another sign. The second sign said "Read this before asking questions about our return policy." I laughed so hard everyone was staring at me. It's like what one of my professors said about why he doesn't give out extra credit assignments: the only ones who do them are the ones who are doing more than passable on their own.

(Stepping to the side topic wise) This is obviously a topic that people want/need to talk about, but guys: TWO threads have been shut down on this issue very recently. Any patience on this topic is likely to have been used up by now so please be careful with your wording.

Actually Will Smith got ticked at being called "Slick" in MiB after specifically stating he didn't want to be called any condescending names =P

I agree leaving the boards after being insulted slightly by someone that normally uses much more direct insults might be taking it a bit far. But insulting someone (albeit relatively mildly compared to your normal reactions =P) for asking a question you didn't like is going a bit too far too don't you think? If the original poster is required to hear only the answer, and not the implications...then the responders should be required to hear only the question, and not the implications. Right? Fair is fair after all.

Getting mad at someone for getting mad is just silly (on both sides of the issue). We can't control whether or not we get mad, but we can control how we deal with that anger.

Grimina (please don't anyone misconstrue this as an "attack" on Lilosh...he knows I love him =P)

I heard his question. I responded. He got pissed, and said "But thanks for the condesension and sarcasm, sorry I asked. I won't be back".

To be honest, he was the first to read any kind of implication into anything.

5th question down, in the cultural smithing section, slick
This is where you assumed something that was clearly untrue by his post. You assumed he hadn't read the FAQ. Here is the line you missed in your reading
I know this site claims that it can't be done
You read and thought it implied he hadn't read the FAQ although he stated that he read where the site said it couldn't be done. That was the first response created after an assumption. In retrospect, I imagine your post would have been different if you had gone on what he said instead of what you thought he said.. The whole "slick" line wouldn't have been necessary at all, because contrary to what you (and others) assumed, he did indeed read the information before posting, it was that very information he was questioning. Rather changes the whole feeling of the post when looked at that way, rather than the same ole "I'm too lazy to read the FAQ so answer my question" posts which this clearly wasn't.

Anyway it's a neverending discussion. I understand your irritation, and I understand his...my only point really is that we should practice control on our own actions because we are the only ones that can or should (and that of course applies to all involved, original poster and myself included)
