  • EQ fanfiction masquerading as official lore

The next time somebody quotes anything about 'Trakanon and the Hero' from the First Fist of Heaven website to support their arguments, I'm going to evicerate tham.
    Slowly.
    With a scaler.

    That is all.

PS. Don't get me started about teir'dal vs drow, ok?

    hmm.. a dull, rusty scaler?

That may be an exploit. You'd be gaining a use from somethign that was never programmed to have a use.....

This wouldn't be much of a problem.....if SoE actually wrote decent lore. That Trakanon story is better than ANYTHING Sony has ever coughed up and tried to pass off as game lore. The books available in PoK directly contradict several lore references that preceded them. What happened to Erudites being a sect of Humans that seperated from the main body in Qeynos? PoK books totally debunk that. And that's just one example.

Revisionist history has never been a viable means of storytelling for accuracy. Fails miserably when attempted in writing game lore as well.

Not aimed at you personally Oberon but quite often when people talk about 'conflicting lore' the conflict is either IC differences between viewpoints/factions/etc, or obsolete beta lore and/or fanfiction vs current game lore. Now, I'm in no way saying that SOE hasn't screwed up history more than once, but for fictional lore put together piecemeal by many, many different people, in general it's not held together too badly.

Jazheira, where's the PoK book you are talking about? That's sounds intriging...

It's off of one of the Erudite's in the Myrist library in PoK. He "sells" books of lore about the Erudite people for 0pp

I read them, and it doesn't speak about the original game lore (in the book that came with the first disk 3 years ago).

I do think the idea of having that sort of thing in game is cool, but, c'mon stay with the story line folks.

I assume you're talking about the old story of Miragul. I've read the books in the library (they talk about Erud and others visiting the land of the elves and 'acquiring' a spellbook), and I don't see how that conflicts with the background of the Erudites as told in the story of Miragul. Miragul's story used to be on the official site (I thought I saw it there not all that long ago), but I can't seem to find it now. Allakhazam's has it, however.

                http://everquest.allakhazam.com/lore/Miragul_Story.html

Note that Allakhazam's also links to the infamous so-called 'Beta Lore', which is the stuff that Banegrivm copied onto his 1st Fist of Light site, and which causes so many problems when people talk about game lore.
(also note that, as near as I can tell from my own research, the beta lore isn't)

The best place to find conflicting stories is, oddly enough, also due to the actions of the Erudites. When the residents of Erudin had the little 'incident' that turned the Vah Shir into space kitties, they left three different versions of events.
The ignorant and unsophisticated Kerrans claimed it was all a plot to dispossess the felines.
The rebellious Heretics thought it was aimed at them (they were camped outside the walls of the Vah Shir city at the time).
The isolated Kejek still don't seem to be entirely certain about what happened, although they think their Kerran cousins are overzealous in attempting to punish the Erudites.

And, of course, the version that matters most - the Erudin version of events - is completely absent from the game.

Itzena, Ubercyrus is right but I'm gonna try to get you the exact guy who sells the book in question. In it, they basically say that Erudites have always been a different race in and of themselves. The book that came with the original EQ said that Erudites were a faction of humans that split from Qeynos (led by Erud) and went to Odus to set up their own gig.

Miragul was one of the people who left with Erud (according to the original lore) but years later, he left Erudin when the Heretics were cast out for studying dark magics.

A saying comes to mind my mother used to use on us when we got in trouble and tried to talk our way out of it.

                    "Get your lie straight."

While I'll concede that history (or, in this case, lore) can be largely dependent on the perspective of the person telling the story, it shouldn't differ THIS much. Especially since the person telling the story in the original book was AL'KABOR (the Erudite Wizard who's supposed to be the be-all, end-all in lorekeepers?).

                      Bah, Al'Kabor is a hack and a self-publicist. :P
I would imgine that the retcon in Erudite history is there mainly for the reason that erudites are a playable, distinct race in EQOA.

And, spinning a tangent off of my own thread - it'll be interesting to see what lore EQ2 has about current EQ events, and what spin the various factions will put in it.
