  • /e head explodes in incredulity!

I checked my inventory the other night and found a plethora of sunshard ore. A nice, polite 45 Shadowknight was woefully under-equipped and I had often seen him in the bazaar or in PoK LFG.

I chatted with him for a few minutes, checked out his gear. Asked him if he had a few free minutes then ran to TBS and made a full set polished energeiac for him, totally free. I didn't care since he seemed liked he needed a leg up and I could use the skill ups in tinkering and to advance my smithing and tinkering trophies. 30k plats spent but I like to help folks now and then.

    He seemed happy and grateful.

A few days go by and he has LoN Starter Deck that I thought I could snap up and use for some trades . I asked if he could do any better on his price for an old armor supplier.

His response: "That's the price. Please don't haggle."

Lesson learned...no good deed goes unpunished.

There's a mean part of me that wants to suggest that you send him an in-game email with just the link to this thread within it.

I'm not sure it'd be a large enough clue-by-four as to what a greedy snert he'd been, though.

I agree that it seems like bad form,

however, having said that, I do think writing about it here is bad form as well.
You helped someone and that is your choice but from reading your post I conclude that it comes down to "I helped you and now I expect you to help me" and although the prices involved are different it is very similar to the situation where people ask for discount because the sow-ed, rezzed or kei-ed you for free.
For me it seems like you are claiming the moral high ground yet you expect your good deed to be rewarded.

(Minor point, but if he was level 45, he couldn't have used Polished Energeiac armour anyway? Did you mean Tempered Energeiac? If so it shouldn't have cost 30k...)

I feel for ya Grimwood. Some people have no idea.
On the other hand there are people out there who never forget. In years gone by, I used to do skilling up back home in Rivervale and then go out to the noobie grounds and pass out the stuff I made to all the people starting out.
Then years later I would be running through POK or somewhere and the very same people would shoot me a tell saying 'hey I remember you. You gave me some armor when I was a noob' etc.
Now that is a nice feeling.

Dont worry about that ungrateful prat... there are still people out there who appriciate random acts of kindness.

                  Wow, that stinks.

This took a slightly different turn than I expected. Thought you were going to say, "He dropped out of trader, and gave me the starter deck, along with (various tradeskill components and/or cash.)"

Edit: fix my unblanaced quotation marks.

You are totally correct, it was Tempered, so it was closer maybe 9k total. I forgot what I made and went back and made a guesstimate after things all went pear-shaped.

However, I will complain about this no more.

And people wonder why I do no kind deeds anymore.

Once upon a time, my ego was stroked by thanks and praise, but too often abused and it was time to say "I really don't care how badly you want/need something, you're in my world now".

Just to add a different perspective to doing good deeds ...

A few months back, I got a tell from a trader I'd seen around the bazaar before. She usually had some interesting TS items for reasonable prices, so I'd bought from her at odd points (along with many other traders, of course). I didn't know who her main was (and I still don't); the only reason I even remembered her was because her name was similar to a character I'd read about in some book or other.

Anywho, out of the blue, she sends me a tell. "Could you do me a favor, please?" Now, usually conversations that start out like this don't end very well, particularly coming from a relative stranger. So I just asked, "What's up?" She replied, "Would you please accept this Discordant Scoriae from me, as a gift?" I was floored. Scoriae were still pretty expensive and all too rare, so this wasn't just a minor gesture. I said something to that effect, and she said she knew.

I asked, "So what did I do to deserve this?" She said that back when I was making Heraldic armors (which must have been around late 2003), I had bought lots of Essence of Sunlight from her. The cash she got from me was enough to make her financially independent; in her words, she was rich enough now to buy pretty much anything she needed or wanted in the game. Now bear in mind, I wasn't paying anything insane. It was fair market value, generally around bazaar prices (there was no barter at the time), and I was making profit hand over fist selling the resulting Heraldic armor (which meant I needed truly industrial quantities of EoS).

So I guess the point is that good deeds can sometimes be rewarded too. I didn't think I was doing anything exceptional by paying fair market price for my supplies, but it apparently meant a lot to this person and got her set up for life in EQ.
