  • *Now* I remember....

Well, ok, I'm back after roughly...a *long* time away.

And I hate for my first post (my old account info is long since forgotten) to be a rant, but I'm starting to remember why I left in the first place.

I'm level 12. I have no rich uncles, and no guild help as of yet. Still, I was anxious to try the new (to me) tradeskill trophy quest.

With my skill at 135, I dutifully undertook the Apprentice Potter test. At first glance, nothing on it looked surprisingly difficult, as everything appeared to be if not trivial, at least close to it.

'There must be a catch', methinks.

And of course, there is. *6*, count 'em, *6* Unfired Ceramic Bola Weight. Each of which requires a Lump of Taelosian Clay. Said lumps requiring a Chunk of Broken Taelosian Stone Worker, which drops from things in zones I have never heard of (off mobs at least 50 levels higher than me to boot, most likely), but of course, the point being, there is no way for a level 12 Enchanter to obtain them.

Hie thee off to the Bazaar, then, only to discover, after looking for 3 days, 1 Chunk of Broken Taelosian Stone Worker, for the low, low price of 1kpp, or, perhaps a day or so later, an actual Unfired Ceramic Bola Weight for a measly 3kpp. No problem--I'll just head out to, hmm, Kurn's maybe, or Blackburrow, and farm 10-15kpp in a couple of days, and then I'll wait a week or so given my play schedule until I make level 15, since the Adventurer's Stone is the only way I can get to whatshername on the ship to turn in the chunks.

Sigh. Why do this to such an otherwise low level quest? Is the explanation going to be that you're just not *supposed* to have a tradeskill trophy unless you're max level, or filthy rich?

I don't mind farming for drops, or foraging, or camping rare spawns, but why make the quest just downright not doable at my level? I have the necessary skill to initiate the test (which, if I am not mistaken, *is* a skill driven test, right? That's why you get different items to make at different levels), but I can't finish it. Not because of my skill, which the test is (allegedly) based on, but the fact I can't get a drop. I wouldn't mind if you forced me to farm something or camp something *that was appropriate for my level*, or even a little higher, but something I have really no practical way to get?

I know, I know. Its like when my son wants to do something, and I always have to say, 'You can worry about that when you're older. You're young, enjoy being a kid', blah blah blah. Maybe I should just shut up and enjoy being a noob again, but still....

While it can be random luck, your best bet is vendor diving. Of course the best vendors to try (other than guild lobby/PoK) are the ones in Abysmal sea and Natimbi. You don't have to be level 15 to get there, but it is a bit of a run. Invis up and go to Jaggedpine Forest (either through Blackburrow or Surefall Glade) then run to the Gnoll caves and zone into Nedaria. Once in Nedaria, you can take the magus (you don't need the stone for that port).

The quest isn't actually a low "level" quest, it is a low "skill level" quest.

I'm guessing that when these were designed, they thought people's level would scale along with their skill level? Just a guess. Some of the other trophies have similar "road blocks" in them, so beware.

I think you can start the trophy quest at a skill level of 50.

        Good luck.

No. I wanted some things with drops. And frankly there is not much. If you have a suggestion for something near that trivial (not lower, but higher will work) that requires a dropped component, I will consider replacing it. It has to be a mob drop, not a forage, or fishing, or whatever.

(BTW... that "6" is 2 combines not 6 combines)

The Apprentice Potter test is an aberration. The tests were not meant to be mean, especially the lower tier ones. You can see that by browsing similar level tropies for other tradeskills.

Luckily there is a pretty reasonable way out of your predicament:
                  1. Delete the Apprentice task.
                  2. Level Pottery to 150+
                  3. Now you qualify for the Freshman task which is much more reasonable. Yes that one it does involve a JC combine that is 110 trivial, but for a fraction of the money needed to get taelosian clay you can level JC way beyond that. The alternative is to ask a jewelcrafter to lacquer 2 or 3 pearls.
