I first ran into this Bard a month or so ago, asking in the Plane of Knowledge if there was a Human Smith around who could do Expert DoN Smithing for her.
She had two Wooly Rhino Horns, and was not overly happy when I told her I could make only one or two items with them, but in the end, she asked for two Bracers and left happy. She found me a few days later with materials for the augs.
Enter this morning. I know how hard it is to get those Horns to drop. Finding Rhinos, dealing with the one in ten (with luck) drop rate, the adds, the general hassle of the zone. I get a tell from the Bard asking if I would have time to make another few pieces of armour for her and she hands me fourteen Horns, enough for the rest of the suit she wanted with two to spare. This lady has certainly done her research too, as she has available every piece I need for the combines other than the patterns.
So we head to Qeynos with a pack full of materials and she chats happily about how limited her play time has been this fall, and I toss the items into the forge to make the Claviger Bars . . . and I fail.
My Smithing skill is 282, I have Smithing Mastery 3, luckily I have Salvage, since I get the Large Brick of HQ Ore back (as I said, she did her research; she brought me enough HQ ore to make four batches of three bars and two spares).
Happily, she thinks it is funny that I would fail on a 122 trivial combine, until I fail a second time. At this point I tell her I am going to run over to buy Small Bricks to minimize losses. And I fail, and I fail. Salvage gives me back roughly a third of the bars I am combining, but in the end, I have made two Bars of Claviger Steel out of fourteen Wooly Rhino Horns.
At least the conversion to Stalwart Sheets is NoFail, so we laugh and I make her an Expert's Stalwart Helmet out of the only two sheets I had managed to make.
Well, not really. I failed on that too.
I think I am going back to bed.
