Let's give a counter example to Itek's tomato theory:

So, the community garden has tomato plants, and you work from 7am to 4pm every day. Sometimes you get up in the morning and find a ripe tomato before anyone gets too it. Great, go ahead and pick it.

Unfortunately, the guy next door doesn't work and picks the entire garden clean twice a day and the only time you get a tomato out of the garden is if you sneak in early. You can't compete with him since you have to be at work every day and don't have the ability to pick fruits even though you might have planted the seeds...

Anyhow, long story short, I've planted seeds and never had any fruit grow.

So now my technique is to till the soil and buy all the vendor junk I feel I am able... (You can buy lots of stuff for 1s each) and clean out the vendor as much as possible. It's a lot cheaper for me, I occasionally get some fruit when I find it. It also has the advantage of making rare item 1 potentially available, also leaving room for rare items 2 3 4 5 and 6 if you're lucky.

Do you guys all till the soil? If not, please stop saying things like "selfish" and "self-serving".

    Ten.

When I wrote this I was not directing it towards the EQTC community, or anyone in general.

It's the rant forum, I assume you rant about things that bother you here.

The point of my post was not 'OMGEES YOU GUYS PLEASE STOPP SO I CAN GET MY STUFFIES'

The point of my post was 'grumble grumble, dern people'

      one last quote

realy. I don't believe that I'm the only one picking them off the vendor. otherwise they would, well still be there.
When I purchased them off of the vendor, though, by leaving some on the vendor. I allowed, if not myself, at least the next person, who may or may not have bought them all up, to also have some.

Truly I may not have done it for the benefit of others. I did it also hopeing to find more items one day again in quantity.

now if the person who had purchased the last one, had left it. then more may have accumulated. so the next joe who comes along, and decides that he needs them, gets some, and he may decide to take the last piece, or leave it so more folks may dive the item when some more accumulate.

Anyway, I did not post to yell at anyone. I like the EQTC community and I would never intentionally attack anyone on their boards.
I posted because I thought that it was rant-worthy and felt like contributing.

But Flehmen, wouldnt you feel bad about taking away all the communities tomatoes? so you could have one?

(I'm not talking about discordant scoriae here I'm talking about items who's value lies in their quantity, just to clarify)

        props for planting tomatoes though!
may i suggest seeding fuzzlecuttter formula next to them to keep away worms

Edit: just so you all know, I just tried to type in 'tomatoes' as my password at login

CONTEXT ... go look it up.

My comments all say, in effect, "you are doing YOURSELF a dis-service when you purchase the last one of a rare item, because you've just slain the golden goose, no more eggs for you."

I'm deliberately selfish. Self-interest is GOOD. But the point I tried to make is "thou shalt not ruin the market trying to get a bigger share."

The "counter-example" of the community garden isn't. It's a complaint that some people have more chances to "prune" the garden than others. Guess what, this is true always and everywhere. Don't expect equality of outcome, you will only be disappointed.

If you never see the fruit grown on the tomato plant, that isn't to say it doesn't grow. But if you up-root it it NEVER WILL grow, and you've hurt others who WERE picking the fruit.

You should also note that I didn't say "we should make a pact to never pick each other's seeds" since I'm not completely insane. I just said "those picking up the seeds are acting against their own self-interest."

As for "greed" ... if we weren't greedy for components we'd not be vendor-diving correct?

Diver A: Wow, 120 "rares" ... I'll take 100 and leave a stack so people will not clean them out and let them re-grow.
Diver B: Wow, 20 "rares" ... good to see people are selling them here, better leave one so the stack doesn't disappear.
Diver C: Dang, only one "rare" ... better grab it while the grabbing is good.

Which one killed the golden goose till the next server reset?
If A and B had switched places would B not have still left one?
Would A then just have been unlucky not to find these precious "rares" before someone else came along?

I'm in FAVOR of greed and self-interest. But "enlightened self-interest" is hard to find.

I'd get into a "game theory" discussion of "vampiric treatment of sources of rare resources" (there is actual academic discussion of the topic in several gaming books, most frequently White Wolf Vampire: the Masquerade and some old TSR Ravenloft sources) but it's a little high-handed. Basicly there are two theories. One, that it's destructive to over-cull and the other that if one source is destroyed another will eventually present itself. I subscribe to the first theory.

I get to say I disagree with your theory of game play. (Which I did in my original post.) After I've explained why I disagree you can debate that. (People's responses.) But I'm certainly allowed to say "I think you missed my point" and re-state it and refute your position. (My second post.) This isn't personal, which I tried to short-circuit by explaining that you can take all the seeds you find, as I don't vendor-farm much at all, because you aren't hurting anyone in the end beside yourself.

And to a lesser extent I was also just comiserating (spealling ?) with a fellow tradeskiller (and later discovered guildmate) who was venting some frustration.

So I'm gonna stop replying to this thread. I wouldn't have made this post except I felt that I needed to make it clear to Mae that I wasn't "lobbing" words around AT people, but using them in a completely different meaning from personal or semi-personal attacks. (I'm a Comp Sci major. We -deliberately- study "greedy" methods and attempt to use them all the time. Calling me "greedy" is just another way of telling me "successful" in my opinion. You pretty much have to call me a "liar" to upset me personally.)
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

Itek all I can tell you is reread the OP. The post is a complaint that he is seeding the vondor for his own purposes. I understand the argument as to why this is against self-interest, but the OP argument is that we are all acting against HIS interest.

I, like many other tradeskillers, like to grab rare items off vendors, knowing full well someone gave up something of value for very little. But to expect people to leave items on vendors for the purpose of making it easier for YOU to acquire more, is selfish and unrealistic, hense my charge that someone should leave items there in bulk for others....which is also unrealistic.

What seems to be the case with the OP here is typical of a lot of the EQ community...so caught up in their own self-interest that they expect the rest of the community to bow down and cater to their needs, without themselves offering to give back to help people.

Ok, time to close the thread.

I don't care who you were aiming for, yourself, or the great mass of "other-but-certainly-not-you-my-fellow-eqtc'ers" when those words were used, I said to stop using em. And those responding to your posts can't seem to help themselves either.

So enough. If you can't just get along, you'll have to move along.

              Next topic!
