Bellfast's Scrindite quests - waste of time for non-researchers?

I recently finished up the Bellfast quests (Parts for Bellfast, More Parts for Bellfast) which resulted in a Scrindite's Mechanoinstruction Manual. This was a quest specially customized so non-researchers could complete it, but the result is completely useless to someone who can't do spell research. I'm wondering why the non-researcher arc was even put into the game.

You have to do this quest to get the later quests from Bellfast. These are the quests to get the recipes to make an AAAA/holepoker. While these days you can simply look up the recipes here on EQTC, that is the in-game source. In addition in order to make a holepoker, you need Scrindite's Senescent Scribbles, which is a result of one of the later quests. If non-researchers could not do the first quest, most of the gnome classes could not do the quest to get the Scribbles.

Ah, I see, by completing the subsequent quest I can manufacture a holepoker that I can give to a researcher to make the mechanoinstructions. So it's not useless after all.

Does the holepoker vanish after one combine, or can it be used repeatedly?
