  • Windows and computer [stinks]

Since Sunday, I've hardly played on EQ or for that matter any games.

Sunday night: guild raid. Missed the raid due to bad storms causing power failure for a few hours Thankfully I don't need Saryn flag so no loss here.

Monday early morning: guild was just done with raid, was forming xp group when second power failure crept on me like a red con scowling mob to an afk player

Monday evening: was able to get power but computer started leaking badly. Somehow the water cooling system broke apart during the power failure. Thankfully water missed the computer compoments.

Wednesday evening: repaired system leak tested and running good. But computer somehow "lost" the sound system repeated reinstalling and uninstalling failed. Suspected corrupted driver.

Thursday early morning: found more problem. computer can't access any thumb drives, all are "not recognized" and when I tried to print out the help page, printer printed only in ASCII garbage (like old DOS mode) Multiple corrupted driver maybe?

Ran Windows XP install and used repair feature. 5 hours later still downloading 2 years worth of updates, patches, and a SP2 pack. So far printer's working right, thunb drives working, and sound's back on.

I would be very cross if EQ won't play by tonight's guild raid.

I feel your pain. Last week my computer locked up on me while trying to exit out of EQ. I was pretty tired, so just hit the power button. I've done this in the past, no big deal. The next day I went to start up, and kept going through a Windows restart. After 2 hours on the phone with a friend, ends up I had a corrupted partition on the hard drive that was unrecoverable. I spent the next 2 days loading everything onto a new hard drive and still need to ship my old one off to a friend to recover the data.

ah gives me a /rant on place..
seems my sister installed Sims 2 and has been installing crap left and right for it.. as well as installing any games she wanted to play. on the EQ computer that oddly enough has the worse virus/spyware protection..
im playing EQ and it finally kicks in, the background for viewing an image pops up, goes nonresponsive, and the virusscanner goes insane.. starts popping up..2 files infected, i decide to ignore and bother later..
alt+F4.. 2 seconds later.. 4 files infected.. hmm.. /wonder.. alt+F4.. 2 seconds later..6 files infected.. etc. etc.. 16 files infected... /tell friend screw it, it wont shut up.. im rebooting comp, ill brb (note i said that horror movie nono the "brb")
i reboot, and evidently that sets off a chain reaction of spyware/adware/downloader programs and other crap..
pops up with "Thank you for installing this and this and this"..
i finally just go get someone who knows more about it than i do and tell him to look at it, we start up virus scans, spyware scans, .. 12 hours later, im still running constant virus + spyware scans with new programs lol..
the programs are automatically reinstalled after deleting so its getting annoying
      aka- scan = some found
after scan i rescan and the same are found
hopefully i can play EQ today, this is getting to the point i want to smash my computer into little bits and install EQ on this comp
ah well, back to forum hopping waiting on something interesting to talk about.. i needed to /rant to vent off anger before i do something.. mm... drastic..

I'm really surprised your friend didn't mention this...

Run your spyware & Virus Scans while your computer is in Safe Mode. Makes it harder for the spyware/viruses to reinstall themselves.

I would also run several different ones. They seem to catch different things. Spybot, Adaware, Windows Defender and Trend Micro's housecall (housecall.trendmicro.com) are all good (and free) ones.
