  • Hard drive died :(

Was defraging my EQ puter's hard drive while patch was going on when it died. There went all my raw data of skill-ups/combines for research, smithing, fleching, and pottery.

I should have done backups. Will take me months to get enough plat saved to run them over again on 7 different characters as well as another account or two. Dunno if I will have the energy to do it all over again tho. Getting these toon's to 300 in tradeskills is rather draining and I still have not reached that goal. Cant imagine doing it all over again on a new account.

The character doesnt lose skills if that is what you are worried about. Character info is on the server no matter what happens to your hard drive.

All character raw data such as lvls, armor, skills ect are saved on the server. Only your personal settings are saved on your pc such as your chat window placements, hot keys ect.

You can load EQ onto a new hard drive with out any issue. As long as you know your log in and passwords and that you have all disks!

      Been there... done that!

I know the combines are saved and I will remember them. What I was gunna do was provide logs for a data base publishment to show how many combines it takes to get to a skill level on all my characters. ie, this toon got to 250 smithing with.... say 1200 combines. That toon got there with say 900 combines, while this other got there with 2200 combines.

All that data is gone now.

ouch, very sorry to hear that all the work you've done is gone. I found the data you had posted so far very interesting. At least you still have some of your smithing data from your earlier posts here... though I realize that's only a small portion of all the data you collected

Hehe yeah. Gotta update my sig too. This toon now at 199 reaseach. Got enough saltpeters and sulphur to do another 60 runs on solutions. Minus one bad accidental combine attempt with a low skill, he is 100% for making various mechanoinstructions too. 80% for 61 spells too. Level 60 or under spells are just to expensive to justify making tho even tho they provide a higher success rate from the lower trivials. Alas, making the solutions are almost as expensive too.

Once I get to 242 research. It will be a upward and slow battle to 300, I cant imagine how estatic I will become just for reaching 250. Lol

                Nooo!

I registered just to post this since you seem to have put a lot of work into it.
I don't know how badly your drive crashed. If you can still access it in windows(with or without a reformat), you could always get a hold of a drive recovery software and try to recover your files with it.

If that isn't an option, then you could always send your drive off to a specialist company that does drive repairs/recoveries, they will most likely be able to get your data back as long as the physical head of the drive didn't touch the platters while it was crashing/crashed.

I hope you can get that data back, I'd love to see it.

Not A Hard Drive, But Just As Troublesome

I had my computer crash on me while playing EverQuest. About four to five years ago, I was playing this game on a Intel Celeron 433 MHz computer, and I hit the zone line from West Freeport heading to the East Commonlands. Only nothing happened. I was left staring at the distant East Commonlands forest with no computer activity taking place. The computer had frozen up, so I was forced to manually reboot it to bring windows back. The problem was, windows wouldn't come up, but the blue screen of death certainly did. Again and again. Uh oh.....

Fortunately, the computer was still under warranty at this time, and I had purchased it from a local (and easy to reach) Future Shop. I took it in, and a couple of days later it was fixed. It turned out that one of the main memory chips had failed, and that was what caused all of the problems. I brought the computer back home, turned it on, and logged back onto EverQuest. Everything ran fine.

I work for a Forensic Computer team, and we regularly recover data from 'crashed' Hard Drives.

Its not as hard as people think, but a lot of the software tools we use are very expensive.

If you are in England and feel you have tryed everything you can and the Drive is usless to you, I can take a look at it.

Send me a PM and I can give you an address to send the Drive to. All I would need are logfile names and info on anything you need recovering.
(hell if you want to send it from outside the UK thats fine by me)

Just a bit of a disclamer - I cant be responsible for a drive that gets lost in the post. I dont mind doing the work for free, but if you want the Drive returning, you will have to pay. I can't promise that you will get your files back, but will try.

One more really good idea - should you get the data back somehow - or re-create it...

                      The 'poor-mans' offiste backup:

Start up a webmail account - like Yahoo or something and email that file to yourself

Keep a copy on Yahoo's mail servers.
If you zip up those TXT files, they'll pack down very nicely.

Gmail offers unlimited space. I still have a ton of invites left too, if anyone wants one (not sure if gmail's wide open or not now) just PM me here, with an email address you have currently.

I do that with my Resume, just in case - even if my house burnt down, I'd still have that resume

But all in all - sorry to hear that, if your drive's shot - it might not hurt to see if you can get that data recovered. As long as those platters aren't physically damaged (or damage too bad at least) that data can be retrieved..

Pootle's offering you a very expensive service, for free - might wanna take him up on that, if there's nothing on that hard drive you'd be worried about someone else seeing, anyway

No, hard drive died. Data corruption was not a issue. The rotor... motor whatever you wanna call it just wont spin any more. I got a RMA on it but had to send in the old drive for a replacement.

Brought this back up from a aged PM. We need a flashing icon or something to let us know we have PM's on these boards. Lol
