  • Rollbacks...sheesh!

Ok Folks I for some reason I cannot explain have been having difficulty linking from Sony's Forums so i decided to cut and paste this item...

    From...http://eqforums.station.sony.com/eq/...id=261....this is taken...

    Hello everyone,

We have now completed our last group of character restores in regards to the update issue that occurred on the morning of January 18th. Before I go into the details let me start by giving our apologies to all of those that were unknowingly affected by the correction of our error. We did feel that we needed to be aggressive in dealing with this issue. I also hope that everyone can understand that we needed to be vague on the details while our actions were being taken. However, now that it is complete let me take a moment and explain our solutions.

The summary is that we rolled back any character that had traded with the Beta merchants from our Prophecy of Ro testing server. We also rolled back characters that had traded with those ground zero characters as well as any subsequent traders along down the line.

Taking a step back I will start with the morning of the update. During the beta testing of an expansion we will have a number of NPCs available to facilitate the testing of new tradeskill recipes. Since the point is to actually test recipes and combines the items are free or extremely cheap. Unfortunately, due to a data error, these 25 NPCs with 1,530 items ended up on the live servers. As soon as we realized the issue we removed the NPCs from the Plane of Knowledge. We decided not to take down the servers until we fully understood the situation and its ramifications. This was the approach that we continued to take throughout the day – slow, steady, and methodical. After researching and tracking both the players and items we crafted a solution that would not require server downtime and would only affect a small percentage of our overall population.

We began with the characters that purchased items directly from the Beta merchants taking the time to exclude those people that only purchased harmless items such as water. We also excluded anyone who only sold to those merchants. After that we expanded to those that traded with those characters and iterated down the chain to include all trades. We felt that we had to widen the web in this way to prevent a number of secondary methods of dealing with these ill-gotten items such as trading the results of tradeskill combines. At this point we understand that we are directly affecting players that might have had no knowledge of the source of these items or results of these items. However, we believe it was necessary to take this aggressive step to maintain the integrity of the economy.

Soon thereafter we expanded our investigation to the other sources such as guild bank, shared bank, bazaar transactions, and other more obscure possibilities. This afternoon we ended with a final sweep of all areas to ensure that we conducted as thorough of a clean up as possible. We did this in a step by step manner so that we could keep an eye on the number of characters affected, maintain a high level of thoroughness, and minimize any chance of errors.

I have also seen a number of people suggest that we should have taken down the servers and rolled back every active character on every server. That was my first thought as well but once you get into the details you can see that this would not have been the best course of action. Primarily, every character would have lost their play time instead of the small percentage that was involved. Also, keep in mind that any rollback or restore has a small chance of an error and rolling back that number of characters would have magnified those exceptions to an unacceptable degree. After going through this process over the last 24 hours and seeing the results I am confident that we took the best course of action under the circumstances.

The result is that the integrity of the economy has been maintained while touching less than 1% of the character population of EverQuest. The majority of the EverQuest population was able to enjoy the game normally with zero server downtime and no loss of play time. We do understand that this might not matter to those of you that were rolled back and for that we apologize.

In conclusion, there are two known issues with the rollbacks regarding guild membership status and missing corpse issues that may have affected some customers. Customer Service will be assisting with these specific known issues, but will not be assisting with requests for reimbursement of items, coin, experience, AA’s, or flags that were removed due to the character rollbacks. If your character is having problems joining or being removed from a guild or if your character appears to be missing a corpse, please submit a petition under the appropriate category and they will assist you as quickly as possible.

    Thank you for your patience,

    "I'm late, I'm late...."

...Ahem please forgive this method, but I also want you to excuse this whine...45 MINUTES is NOT a terrible loss of playtime Chris Lena and would not have cost one of our Guild mates Epics or another's 1.5 epic loot among other things...What should have been done is to drop all servers imediately and then rollback all online and offline to the point before the servers were put back up and go from there THIS has happened before, and no adverse problems nor were innocents subjected in any way other than a few minutes loss...

Bad Call Sony...Just my humble opinion.

From the horror stories i have been reading in the general chat thread, people have been loosing all sorts of stuff. A whole lot of people are talking about leaving the game and to be honest I dont really blame them.

I am glad I am away from the game at the moment, as a daily tradeskiller there is a good chance that i would have probabaly got snagged into this somewhere down the chain.....

Seems like a huge mistake by SOE is being taken out on players.....

I hope those affected manage to survive and get their stuff back.

I had my main and trader rolled back. I wasn't even online when the *bad* mercs were up. The only thing I can see from my logs is I sold 2 small bricks of velium to a person...80p worth of sales got my toons rolled back with a lost of DoN crystals, exp, AA gotten from a mission, and a ton of fletching precombines that I had waiting for me in my bags. I'm just glad I waited to do the combines. I prob would have quite EQ if I dinged 300 Fletching only to get rolled back for 80p sale in bazaar. SOE continues to screw this thing up. Thanks alot noobs.

Wont happen Sony does not admit to their mistakes like small children they try to focus the blame elsewhere. I just still cannot fathom how the method they chose to do this was the right choice in their minds. I am not in favor of people taking advantage of the system it hurts us all, but in this case it would be better if they rolled back their rollbacks and just let us go on with our game lives. Theystill should have did the rollbacks imediately and in this I stand firm...

Huh there are people who bought and sold to vendors and get to keep the ill gotten plat, this is wrong it is ill gotten gains...

Persoanlly Ifeel for the Devs Like Ngreth who are gettin hit with this mess...

EQ just roll back the roll backs and let us pick up the pieces please...

Ok I am finished with my rantings...for now...muahaha.

Huh? I know of not one single "noob" who would think to put stuff in his share, launder pp in the baz, or many other tricks to try to cover their tracks.

I think we should be thanking the cynical, selfish, old-timers. (And no, I am not saying that because you are an old-timer you are automatically either cynical nor selfish. Thanks to all those who are cool and have helped me.)

My two cents on the subject, a 45min. lapse of time is nothing in a toon's gaming career. Even 2 hours of roll back is nothing.... No matter how many AAs, TS combines, etc. you might have done. (Btw, did anyone get an epic in that 45min you think? I can see that being a problem.)

Everyone should have been rolled back. I have yet to see a good arguement why it wasn't done.
I call for the elimination of EQ levels 1-50.

Ok i am provoked...lol the roll back does not effect only the 45 minutes the venders were up but two whole days plus of play time for not only those who took advantage of the goof up but others who were not even online at the time just because they had dealings with those who had taken advantage of the goof up...why not put a scarlet letter on those who took advantage so we the innocent know who not to deal with then we would not be effected...lol

the problem is that SOE apparently doesnt back up the character database before a patch, so rollbacks take a character to the last save point for that character...which, as some have experienced, can be a few days ago.

              My god what a mess....

...and since I risked buying a few items (nothing spectacular, some hides, 7 windstones...things I always see after a patch when vendor diving) off the REGULAR PoK merchants (SOE said they had re-popped PoK so I figured tainted items were poofed), I dread logging in tonite

Ifeel your pain, true my accounts are dormant right now and have been since before the patch but even I fear catching up my subscritions now and want to wait.

Too many people who have been adversly effected from this Goof up and it will not end even though they should try to some how back up before they patch, which is only good practice, they have Scr*** the Pooch here and they are hurting innocent people with their rollbacks. I just wish they would rollback their rollbacks and let us pick up the pieces, to me this would be the lesser of the evils.

You know, I just assumed that everyone in the IT field made backups nowadays before a bring down the servers type patch....

I guess it was impossible to do anything to really fix the problem. 'cept maybe look around before you open the barn doors.... this was kinda an obvious problem...

The blame rests with Sony, no need pointing fingers at other PCs. If you found a vendor selling metallic drake scales at 1pp each what would you do?? Buy as many as can?? Or petition a GM?? I think most people, if they were honest would go with the former (well maybe just a stack or so), anyone who petitioned the mistake would most likely still be waiting for a repsonse. Ultimately Sony should have had the controls & procedures in place to ensure that this doesnt happen (obviously they dont (a squiggle on the back f a beer-mat doesnt count), but hopefully they will for future).

Im not up with the current legal position for "virtual reality money" but if we have earnt it legally and they have taken it away and refused to except any requests for return, is there a case to be answered??

                      For what it's worth:

Those that are familiar with "Beta-Testing", they would recognize the "Whoops-vendor" and hopefully (honest players would) would report it to a GM immediatly. Those that never tried beta would not recognize the "whoops-vendor" and shop at it like any other vendor. It would be a vendor-divers dream!

The effects of the vendors being on the servers would have been very short lived. Initially it would affect prices and availablity of various TS items, but those items would have been eatten by combines in short order. The vendors were on the servers very briefly so the quantity of items on the servers are limited. Rolling back just seems so extreem for a brief problem. I dont see the harm in the "powers-that-be" saying simply, "Whoops!" and leaving at that.

The Whoops-Vendors is as short lived as the Uber-Experience from various MMs or the uber-plat that was made from selling tunas/crabbies from Abysmal Sea. Sooner or later SOE will nerf them to what the standard should be.

                      Just my worthless 2cp.

                        Here's something really bad:
I SHOULD have been rolled back and I wasn't! Unless for some odd reason someone had 245 othmir furs on them that they suddenly wanted to unload onto my buyer 90mins after the servers came back up... too much of a coincidence for me. Yeah my hubby is stoked about his tailoring skillups, but this is just a case that a lot of the rollbacks didn't hit the people they were supposed to.

The whole thing is a stupid mess- my account is valid until May, and I don't think I'll reactivate my subscription unless something better comes out of SOE.

I managed to buy three coarse spider silks off a vendor a couple months ago. I thought I was just a lucky vendor diver. Should I have actually reported it to a GM?

Actually replace the program files for these patches should only take about 5 minutes (if their networks or disks are slow). If they're not backing up all the users prior to that, then what were they doing for the other 2 hours and 55 minutes? For some of these patches they schedule downtimes for 8 hours or more.

                              Hello,

We sincerely apologize again for the problems caused in response to Wednesday’s update. We do understand that many characters were rolled back due to actions beyond their control along with those that took direct advantage of the situation. We also understand that many other players that were not rolled back were also affected in indirect ways. This weekend we will be offering double experience to all players. This will require us to take down the servers early tomorrow morning and they should be up and offering the modified experience at 9am PST. This event will run until Monday morning at 10am PST. Once again please accept our apologies for any interruptions this has caused in your playtime.

So saying you can understand how the rollbacks cannot effect me one way or the other, but a lot of my Friends are hurt by Sony's actions. and this is an outrage.
