  • ARG!!! waht do people Think Niami and I are going to do!!!!

WHY oh WHY must people lie about their email address when regestering for these boards?

It is not like Niami and I are going to spam you.

If we refuse to put ads up to generate revenue for the site, what makes you think we will sell your email?

The board autogenerates a welcome email, and that will be the LAST email you get from us unless you basically ask for mail from us, or have a technical problem so bad that I cannot service it on the boards.

I am so sick of bounced emails in my mailbox. (from the welcome mail)

Hehe, I'll tell you what you can do. Its yer boards, but I would promptly smash their account flatter than a halffer on the bottom of your boot. Then I'd start a sticky thread listing their names and label it "Lousy Rotten Stinking Liars"......

Ngreth, I think I gave you a real email address. But, people generate fake email addresses by reflex.

Heck, creating malformed email addresses (blah@REMOVE_THIS.foo.cx), even if they are going into a "friendly" database, is often a good idea. You may lose control of your database (someone hacks it, you go bankrupt and the list is considered an asset to be sold for your creditors, the box you use for eqtraders is replaced, you sell the old one, and someone recovers the data from the hard drive, you join the dark side (see: monkly-business.com), etc etc).

While I personally doubt that any of the above will happen to you two in particular, I would also have doubted it (to a less strong degree) that it would happen at monkly-business, or that courts would decide that privacy clauses didn't apply to bankruptsy sales, that the thing I wrote for Dragon magazine when I was 12 would be findable on google, etc etc etc.

              But all those things happened.

Once you let information out of your grasp, you can never get it back. So, people get very very cautious about letting information out. If you require a field to be filled in, and don't allow for a "I wish to keep this information private" option, people will fill in bogus data.

              Welcome to the information ghetto.

                make a junk box

Bah, generating a mailbox on hotmail, or something like that, to receive your mail, is not hard.

Plus it doesn't cause you privacy problems.

So what if someone gets that e-mail address.

Exactly Xaanru. Awhile back I set up an email specifically designed for my everquest mail. I have 3 emails that I use almost daily. My normal email for friends and family. My everquest email for things eq related. And another box for everything else. Works quite well, and I dont have to worry about people getting my personal email.

*nod*, I use a variation on the same trick.

I own a domain. When I give away an email address, I give away something like:
                    eqtraders_registration@...

Makes it easy to eliminate email addresses if one gets out. =)

I have five email addresses myself. One is for close friends and family only. One is for mailing lists. One is for extended friends who tend to send me stupid forwarded stuff, one is for EQ and one is for spam. Any time I have to fill out something with an email address I use the spam address.

While I don't think I'd actively start trouble with someone by posting thier info for giving me a bademail account, I do run a few yahoo groups and if someone can't be bothered giving a legit email, then I simply can't be bothered giving them membership in the group - that's just to protect me and my group from spammers.
