  • Someone has my name >.<

I cancelled a few months ago but came back during the 14-day freebie because, well, EQ had been calling my name. I'd missed Norrath more than I thought I would.

Only I logged into find myself Brynnex instead of Brynne! Apparently, someone on E'ci also had the name Brynne, and when the merge was made, one of us got X'd. I found out that whoever was the older character could get rid of the X. I figured that since my character was born October '99 and over 1500 played hours, I'd have the edge--but apparently, the other Brynne "has far more playing time than [my] character."

Sucks for me, but I can get a new name of my choice. Except the aesthetic variations on Brynne I can think of (Bryn, Brynn, Bryne) are taken on my server. (I used to run into them all.) It's just an ouchie that after six years, I've lost my EQ "identity" on that server--what're the chances that someone else named Brynne played even longer?! :/

I despise my X but I don't know what to call myself now. I could do Brynnee, I suppose, but that's as bad as the X. Or some up with some longer name like Brynne'vela or something, if they'd let me do that. I'd really like to keep the "Brynne" part at the start, because I don't know how else any of my old friends will find me.

Suggestions for the name thing? (Can't do anything about the rest. )

Embrace the X, it is your red badge of courage.

Breathe, what race is your character? If you chose a dark elf, Brynne'vela (providing the guides or GMs would allow it) would make a superb name, as it has a dark elven ring to it. KB1's suggestion of Brynnex is a good one as well, as the "x" and the end of your character's name doesn't conflict with it.

I heartily agree that getting the identity of your long lived character zapped like that sucks. When the Ayonae Ro server was merged with The Tribunal server (my longtime home), I feared I would log in and discover the dreaded "x" tagged on to one of my character's names. Fortunately, I didn't.

While it is kind of hard to take your longstanding name being nerfed, Brynnex doesn't sound like that bad a name. It does break it down into more syllables, but I would think the name would work just fine.

Just be thankful (or envious) that your name didn't previously end in SE. I remember ribbing a vendor who was previously Nurse, but had become Nursex. I was tempted to create a character on each server prior to the merge named Hotse, just so one of them would come out of the merge with a catchy name.

"So, how do you say your name?"

            "Brynne."

            "But--"

"::levels a look:: The 'x' is silent."

I'm kind of liking Brynne'vela, but I don't know if they allow apostrophes.

I'm drawing on some extremely old memories, but as Fox the Clever says, I believe apostrophes are allowed when they suit your character, like for dark elves. You may have to petition for it, but there's no harm in that. My own experience with characters getting names Xed (thankfully not Verdandi) involved GMs who were very sympathetic and willing to do whatever the rules allowed to find something satisfactory.

Got one better. One of my groupmates on Morden Rasp was named Manse. Hilarity ensued when we merged with Povar. He got a free rename, of course, but I suspect he'd have gotten that even if they weren't offering them to everyone.

So far as I know you can't have a puncuation or space in a character name. For the (somewhat) obvious reason.

                    It's a FILENAME.

Your -surname- can have ' in it, your first name can't.

Do a complete name change, change your first name and take your old name as your new surname. See also the "what's in a name" thread in the OOC forum.

Sorry you lost the name in the merge. I was really happy that I didn't get X'ed on any of mine.

The hardest part of changing a name would be "how will my old friends from Y find me on X when someone ELSE has the name Itek now."

Guy-I-Don't-Know: Hey Itek, when did you change guilds?
Itek: Huh? I've been in this guild for 2 years... do I know you?
Guy: Aren't you from Server Y?
Itek: Nope, always been here on Server X. Sorry. Check Itekx and see if they've changed their name yet. Use in-game email.
Guy: So wanna tank for us in RSS?
Itek: With my 65 enchanter or my 53 cleric?
                    Guy: .... nice meeting you.
Itek: Be safe and good hunting.
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

                      Breanne?

Brnn ? (I know the gm's can make 4 character names even if players can't)

My cleric - Zeah - would be amused. Haughtilly amused of course, she IS an erudite. Her name was created by ME, not a GM. My bazaar mule was created much more recently. I had no trouble creating "Meah" to be the Mule of Zeah. Now if I could just get THREE letter names, I'd be Nee.

The spelling you have now doesn't suggest the same pronounciation to everyone. My wife has the same situation. Her "Tysche" is pronounced like Tighsh, not Tisky. Many people think she rhymes with "psyche"

So how do YOU pronounce "Brynne"? Something like "Brenn", "Brighnn" or "Brinny" would be appropriate depending on the existing pronounciation. Hard to make good suggestions without knowing which you intended. Most of those will sound WRONG to you.

I tried combining Celestial Solvent, a Raw Rough Hide, Rough Hide Solution and a Skinning Knife. But the result was such an oxymoron, it opened a rift into another universe. I fell through into one of Nodyin's spreadsheets and was slain by a misplaced decimal.

I take it someone from SOE told you that the other Brynne "has far more playing time." If not, maybe there is room to play. I had a character transfered from server A to B then back to A. When it came back from B, the name was "x-ed." SOE dropped the "x" upon request (the non-paying type), so I guess the other character was dormant (perhaps cancelled account). Can't hurt to ask. =)

1500 playing hours is small potatoes... thats only 62 days.

                            I'm over 500 personally.

Um, yeah, four character names can be created by players.

Itek is a real character name I play. (Used to be a mule, then I deleted my mule and made a cleric.)
