  • It's only my opinion but .........

SOE's new skill-up formulae really stink!

I'm not a hyper-tradeskiller by any means. But I've been playing the game for six years now and have been doing tradeskills for probably all but about the first 4 weeks of that time. I have one skill (Fletching) over 200, another (Baking) at 200 and the rest are at least Apprentice level, with several over 150.

When I can't get a group I enjoy doing tradeskills, just for the sense of accomplishment I get as my skills go up. But with the latest Major patch changing the formulae I'm rapidly losing interest. It just feels as if I'm wasting my time now because I'm simply not seeing much in the way of positive results. Let me give you a specific example.

I decided that the next skill I would try to get to 200 would be Pottery. Making the various poison vials can take me to 196, and then it would be just a few Cassarole dishes to 199 and finally Planar Steins to 200. All relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to obtain the necessary ingredients. Or so I thought. Boy, was I wrong.

I spent a couple of nights farming Zombie Skins in Unrest and last night headed to Halas to do the combines. I began with a skill of 164, did 200 combines (about 180 successes) and now have a skill of 175.

Now I'm certain, from what I've read here, that many of you would be ecstatic with 11 SU in 200 combines. But until the changes went into effect, I was getting one SU for every 7 or 8 tries. Those 200 attempts SHOULD have gotten me at or just past 190. Instead, all I got was more and more frustrated.

I know that Sony was responding to complaints that the high-end results were much to difficult to get. And so they said that they would "smooth" out the SU path. Well it would appear to me that instead of making the high end a little more easy, they went the other route and made the mid- and upper-level combines more difficult to SU on.

Am I the only one that feels this way?

Well, you had some bad luck...because you have just NOW hit the point where the formula changed at all (pre-175, it is the same.)

So, it's not the new formula...yet.

Edit: Also, if you have Gates of Discord (or someone willing to make some supply runs for you), you can make the vials using Crow's Special Brew (sold in Abysmal Sea) instead of the zombie skins or pelts. Vendor bought, cheap, and unlimited quantities.

Actually, around the 180-190 mark, there was a "hell level" in the tradeskills that will have been smoothed out because of the new forumula.

So either before or after the new skillup forumula was implemented, things were just about to get tougher for you, either way.

Btw, be sure to /feedback. Feel free to continue here, but /feedback is not the bottomless pit it may seem. It's a good friend, especially when used en masse.

Like they said above, You have been on the OLD formula. You just hit a streak of different luck than you had before.

And if your goal is only 200... you actually have it EASIER than before the formula, because at skill 176 to about 267... the new formula makes it EASIER than before the change.

You can see it in some graphs in this post: http://mboards.eqtraders.com/eq/showthread.php?t=22246

As others have said, you're still on the old formula, but that doesn't mean you have to like it. Pottery does require a high number of combines. Twice as many as other skills like smithing. (Though if you've done fletching, you're used to this.)

Also, you never mentioned what your int/wis is. If those aren't maxed or darn close, then you'll be getting a low rate of skillups.

20 failures in 200 combines seems just a *little* higher than it should be. Check that the combines you're doing are as close to your current skill level as possible. Using a geerlok (support us gnomes). A successful combine may be twice as likely to give a skill up.
I tried combining Celestial Solvent, a Raw Rough Hide, Rough Hide Solution and a Skinning Knife. But the result was such an oxymoron, it opened a rift into another universe. I fell through into one of Nodyin's spreadsheets and was slain by a misplaced decimal.

Meh, try imagining how you would feel trying to get 290+ in JC *cry* My children's college fund is drying up. But, I rather like the challenge. Maxing out in anything in the game should not be easy. I anticipate and EXTREME sense of gratification at obtaining 300 JC and tinkering *someday*. Besides, it's just a game unless, of course, one is spending RL money on plat *ridiculous*.

PoNightmare. Average farming time: 5 hours per day. Time so far: 14 days.
With my necro and botting my cleric I clear 75-80% of the spider field, I bring one more person and we clear the entire field.

Tailor Skillups: 18 total so far.

Yes, the new system does suck.

But you must love this Rissenn! If you don't may I gently suggest you not spend 70 hours doing this?

And OK it is not Tailoring, but when I hit 300 in JC I had perma-grin in RL for days!
