I have a 228 smith and a 186 tailor and I've noticed that in the last couple expansions not much has changed. GoD-OoW-DoN. If you want to skill up you still use the same path, killing the same mobs as before. The new recipies dont give you anything worth making unless the droprate on the components are poor- in which case its easier to do quests or camp mobs that drop the final product than to farm the components then take a rist. It just reminds me why I gave up tradeskilling.

I am not trying to invalidate your comment.
But I am just saying.
If it is easy to get the parts and make it, then it cannot be done for tradeskills... because then it would be common, and therefore it would not matter and no-one would ask you for it because everyone would just do it themselves since it is easy.
It would be nice to have more variety in the skillup path
Maybe the eventual coming of the "bonus skillup items" will help make it a bit different.Ngreth Thergn

Actually...
OoW brought us Bazu & Magnetic... both of which, while uncommon, are reasonable additions to the skill-up tree.
DoN has brought us new Cultural... and while some races don't have it as easy as others (compare Great Reptile Teeth for Half-elves to Yttrium Ore for High Elves), it is yet another addition to the skill-up tree.Angelsyn Whitewings, Cleric of Tunare for 66!Seasons.

I went from ~220 to about 240 primarily on GoD weapons (ending with Velium Gemmed Daggers, but starting with a range of other stuff which trivial lower). All the materials were bazaar bought or vendormined, and I generally broke even or profitted, including failures.
Since 240, my primary skillup route has been OoW magnetic (ingredients purely bazaar bought), which has been *hugely* profitable in addition to easy skillups. I do throw in a few Velium Gemmed Daggers occasionally, since they make a nice profit, but they have become secondary for skillups (don't sell very fast, and I don't have much room to hold stock).
I never did acrylia plate or black acrylia, I haven't done a shadowscream combine since I started GoD weapons, and the number of Blue Diamond cultural combines I've done is laughable (probably less than 20). It's really GoD and OoW that got me from where you are to where I am now (for smithing)
