  • *sigh* hiatus time again

    Howdy,

    I'm NOT new here.

I've been here for ... a fair amount of time....

    I post... a lot...

I -don't- post as much as I could...

    I -don't- hack on people...

I -DO- put in my tag line the SPECIFIC statement "your mileage WILL vary" for a _BRIGHT_LORD_AGNOSTIC_BE_BLESSED_REASON_!__!!!__!

Why do people with less than 1/10th my post count feel that they can take me to task over specifics of how THEIR experience DIFFERS from MINE???

Hear me and hear me well.

    1) I'm taking another break. (Sorry Mae et. al. but I'm just about to REALLY go off the edge, because this is the second time IN A ROW this {self edit} has gotten under my skin, and today it interferes with my CALCULUS FINAL STUDY. It may be a LONG time before I post again.)

    2) I don't give a rat's whisker how long it takes YOU to get an AA point or how long it takes YOU to PL to 46. I take a VERY long time to do both. However I know SEVERAL people who can both PL to 65 in a week AND make more than an AA an hour.

    3) Given that -I- have a /played time in the hundreds of days and I don't play obsessively... the total difference between 9 hours and 50 hours to accomplish two different tasks is 1% or less of player time. (Given that someone with an accumulation of 200 days /played 40 hours is < 1%.)

    4) I'm not even READING this thread, other threads, PMs or the entire FRIGGING BOARD for at least 2 weeks. Good-bye for now, perhaps I'll be back, until then... if you ain't a mod, I'm not reading your ... input.
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.
    Private Messages attended to promptly.

I'm glad this post was returned from whatever holding cell it was banished to... I was looking forward to seeing this guy get some responses...even if he isn't planning on reading them I sure was.

            Wow.
I nearly went and said 'its just a game'. but then I realised, it isn't, it is infact just a message board.

Not sure if this one is funnier or not than the 'Wrong!' rant a while back. guess I'll have to wait and see. (and maybe up my post count a bit to increase the worth of my views )

Now that comes across as pretty eliteist. I wasn't going to post but this comment was why I think the replies were as they were. I read the post this OT applied to and it sure looks like, from the outside, that it is a huge over-reaction. BUT. That is just my opinion, which I would not have shared had this thread not taken this turn. So, primal scream all you want with no justification to the likes of me. I'm ok with that. BUT. Don't then turn around and insult the likes of me based on something as menial as post count.

Yes I'm a visitor. Yes I'm a relative newbie. No, that doesn't make you a better person. Get over yourself.

                Rant on!

Post count is (and always has been...on every board) an indicator. It is neither proof of correctness, proof of intelligence, or even proof that the person sitting at the keyboard IS the person who is credited. In today's internet, it is virtually meaningless. Hundreds of "I agree", "me too", or "Does anyone know" posts make you no more of an expert than the person who reads all the posts and finally decides to answer a question.

I'm not saying Itek is in the wrong here, because I don't know the specific situation, but some of the regulars here do, indeed, have an elitist air to their posts. It's not as bad (and certainly not as vulgar or rude) as most other boards, but it certainly exists.

It personally sounds to me like someone corrected him on something (whether they were right or not) and he took offense. Suprising, considering his own sig...but whatever.

                      Weird

                      Wow, weird thread

Wasn't gonna touch this one, but the comment about post counts is just too hard to pass up.

I know that in this community it is slightly different, but as a former lead board admin for EASports and too many games to list, my experience is that it's "usually" the folks who post the most that cause the most problems over the long-haul.

For some reason, as folks post longer and more often they get a feeling that the community owes them something and that they are somehow better than a new poster.

I know this really isn't on topic for this board, but I just HAD to throw in my 2 cp.

Simply pointing out that he has posted many times, and his point is he stated his opinion many times, then people who are new/rarely post take him to task over trivialities.

So, elitist or not, you make his point better than he does. I was just amused by the irony.

                          Hmmm,

Well, I certainly didn't mean to reinforce his point because I personally don't agree with it. I do respect his (and your) right to an opinion whether I agree or not. Now having said that, if we are going to discuss right and wrong, I have a few thoughts:

                          1) Post count is irrelevant in determining who's opinion is more correct. I will happily agree that many with high post counts have made very big contributions to the community and that I personally have benefited from it. This is not anti-high post count just giving credit where it is due. There are also plenty with high post counts that are elitist.

                          2) There are plenty of trolls that reply only to flame or cause grief. Not fans of these folks either.

                          3) "Res ipsa loquitor" is a great phrase. If we want to figure out whos right, then perform the tests and put the opinion bantering to bed. This is the "put up or shutup phase of our gameshow).

                          4) When someone posts something (anything) then they are open to either agreement or mass (and sometime over the top) disagreement. That risk is implied in posting. If you can't handle your opinion being questioned by anonymous masses, then keep it to yourself in the first place. Defend yourself, fine, but don't whine about the mean person who questioned your omniscience.

                          5) I realize that my opinion and my posts are subject to all of the above and gladly accept that.

                          6) I really hope that nobody is ever "really" hurt by what goes on in forums. That would just be sad. Get your shields up and move on.

                          7) Calculus sucks.

Above is the best point made in this whole thread

I would also like to say that I was not bashing high post count folks. Just, as an admin, the folks who have been around the longest and post the most are sometimes the hardest to control.

Sometimes longevity, high post counts, and the fact that they often understand the rules (and ways to push the envelope) a bit more can lead to some interesting discussions.
