  • A nightmare come true

Was in the middle of doing a smithing run last night (8:00 est). In total I had 110 shadowscream attempts ready to go (220 swirling shadows). Ran to West Freeport, started making humming orbs and doing combines. After 40 combines I had made a few skill points and was feeling quite happy about it.

After 40 attempts I decided to camp, log out of the game and then log back in (I do this to reset the rng). When I tried to log back in, I got hit with a patch that had an estimated download time of 6 hours (cable connection). After trying to reconnect several times, I could not escape the patch. Eventually I gave up trying and nearly threw my telephone through the window. When I finally could log back in without getting patched it was 4 hours later and the 140 remaining no-rent swirling shadows were of course gone from my packs.

So...I am out 6 hours of my real life time farming 140 shadows. I petitioned in-game and the guide told me they don't replace no-rent items. At this point I just feel numb.

    Try emailing a GM.
Remind them of the fact that these norent components take a LONG time to collect and are NECESSARY for smithing skillups.
If the patch was not scheduled, point that out too.
Hope you get a positive response.

The patch message seemed to be running last night and really messesd a lot of people up when they tried to log in. I logged on fine at 7pm est. My husband went afk for half an hour at 8:30pm est while the "patch" downloaded, then was able to log in just fine. Whatever they did last night REALLY messed with the log-in and this is blatantly unfair and not your fault.

That just sucks, , a lot of wasted time.

Myself, I would never camp out with difficult to attain no-rent items to 'reset the RNG'....

We don't know enough about the RNG to even know if that matters at all, you lost the shadows to superstition.

I hate to be so rude and blunt, but I honestly think the GM's will see that you camped out with the no rent items, risking them in the process.

If the game had crashed and kicked you out, I'd be crying a river for you, and so would the GM's.

I Agree with Delftones. You did take a risk by camping out with No Rent items.

But in this case, I can definately see why you might have a case with them. Their unplanned outage caused your risk to not pay off. It could go either way.

Was it an outage with the login server, or with your specific server?

A friend of mine recently lost 20 hours of work due to a server crash. Not only did he loose his stacks and stacks of no rent stuff, but his shar vahl anvil and "other thingy" (can you tell I don't smith much?) were in the forge when the server crashed.

Of course, everything poofed. He still hasn't heard from the GM's (yes, he emailed).

I think what needs to happen here is the removal of the stupid "no rent" tag. It's moronic. I would suggest an outcry from the smithing community is in order. No other tradeskill required component is marked "no rent" - why the heck is this one?

And don't give me "it's swirling shadows - they don't hang around forever". How about "morning dew" or the myriad of "essences" (moonlight, sunlight), "swirling mist"...yeah...those are just as bottleable as shadows...

I also don't smith enough, so I wont get into a debate on weather they should need no rent components.

I also don't know about no-rent stuff being returnable, in this scenario I think is should be returned, but haven't asked. That Anvil and other thingie are definately returnable. I posted about my Corking device temporarily lost in exact same scenario... best thing to do is petition when you first get on, and still be there 2-4 hours later when a GM shows up. All the GM has to do is see that you had the items in your possession prior to the crash or some such.

He's been on every night for 4-6 hours each night, checking his petition and waiting...nothing. Server crash happened Sunday.

Anyway, I really think the no-rent tag should be removed. It's dumb.

I agree with Chenier. I think "no rent" should be removed as well. At least for tradeskill components.

I don't care if the tradeskill is fishing - none of us NEED no rent components - if they think it's a good idea for smithing and we let them get away with it then whatever tradeskill we may or may not do enough of could be next.

So I guess everyone wants to debate it on this thread... ok.

Firstly... do you actually NEED no rent for smithing, or is it just an easier path to 250?

Adding a recipe to tailoring/brewing or whatever that requires no rent components would only annoy you if you made the item.

If you are making the item for profit, if its too annoying, stop making it.

If your making it to skill-up, lifes a witch that way, and almost all tradeskills have difficult to attain skill-up items past 200.

And if it is the absolut only item in the game to get to 250, thats why I shouldn't get into smithing debates.

No-rent items are a bad idea, but you can easily get around it by dueling somebody and getting killed. The no-rent stuff will still be on your body when your corpse decay timer is up a week later (though you will have no mana after dueling).

What really burns me is unannounced patches. We're talking primetime here, 8:00 est, and they are basically locking people out of the game and don't give 2 shiznits. They should include the option to decline any patches before you log on.

                          No.

                          Nononono...

Unless I can "decline" the Fletching/Pottery "Fix".

Letting people pick and choose which patch they want its a bad idea. Even more so when they are squishing bugs out of the software.

No rent (and no drop) items are required - and compose all the farmed items in said recipe - which is the only way to skill up that DOESN'T require an enchanter or priest to enchant or imbue.

So technically, yes, there are other paths.

And yes, we've been complaining since the recipe went live. Since it's part of a Vah Shir newbie quest and not intended to be skilled up on, I expect we will continue to see the same response (none). In addition, since tailors have undermined our complaint (you're whiners, tailoring is harder) and there are a number of 250 smiths from the fine plate days who can make all the spiffy new recipes, I don't expect to see a lot of movement on this.

Personally I'd rather see the enchant metal block broken and never touch shadowscream. I'd rather PL a druid to 29 to imbue emeralds than fart around in hollowshade.

To the topic: I think it's absolutely insane to camp with 140 swirling shadows on your character.

                              I seem to remember...

I thought I remember a post on the old message boards from one of the fan fair tradeskill sessions when someone brought up the subject of swirling shadows being no rent and someone from verant answered with, 'They're no rent?'

By all means correct me if I'm wrong, but I had the distinct impression that the someone from verant didn't *realise* swirling shadows were no rent. I also had the impression that the someone from verant was going to be looking into it... course I have no idea what might have happened to it since then.

I'm also not entirely sure this 'comment from the someone at verant' was verified by anyone else on the board. So please do not take this recollection from my horribly mangled memory as fact.

Just thought I'd throw some bones out there. As for me, I'm more than happy making the bit of cash I do on successful attempts at old school cultural armors, helps my tailoring out significantly. ;-)
