  • a wailing substance

I have been killing Owlbears in HM for the last 2 days including letting the owlbears win the war. Approximately 300 Owlbears have fallen before me and not one "a wailing substance" to be found! Anyone else having these problems, especially on 7th Hammer?

according to what I have read, they only drop from the owlbears when they possess the southern Islands camp. What part of the zone were you killing them in?

Starting from a freshly reset zone, I would go kill the Grimling Chief.
This should trigger an owlbear attack on the south camp.
I would clear the defenders and let the owlbears take the camp.
I would then farm the islands (not the cheiftain camp) for substances.
If the wolves attack the south and win, then you can just farm the wolf substance until the owlbears take the south back.

      hum,

The couple times I was hunting in PC Yelloweyes dropped wailing substance. I do not know what it is used for so if I picked it up I either sold it to a vendor or destroyed it when my inventory got full if the vendor didnt pay me for it. My characters are on 7th Hammer also. I suggest you go to PC and pull Yelloweyes' feathers out to see if it will give up the wailing substance.

This is correct. You need to manipulate the Holloshade war to get them to spawn on the southern islands.

Thank you very much! I'll give that a try.

Yes, the owlbears in Paludal can drop the wailing substance; there aren't many of them though so not easy to farm lots for skillups, though. Hollowshade war is best for that.

I have done this a few times and here is a tip. Once you kill the named Grim at the South island, the first attack will come within 10 mins or so, often sooner. The first attack is alway (I am 99% sure) that Owlbear from the caves will attack the South islands. So all you have to do is, wait for the message, kill the grim defenders and you will have the South islands occupied by the Owlbears.

If you want the Owlbears to keep the islands, you can do one of two things. You can defend the South islands from the Sonic Wolves by killing all the wolf invaders everytime they try to attack the south island. Or you can wait until the Owlbears attacking the wolf caves and go kill the wolf defenders. After you kill the wolf defenders, all 3 camps will be owlbears and you can hunt until someone resets the war.

Couple things to remember, if a majority race attacks the minority race, the minority race always wins. For example, if the Owlbears occupy both their caves and the South islands, they can attack the sonic wolves in their cave as many times as they want but they won't win. However, if the wolves attack either of the Owlbear camps, they wolves will win.

The safest bet is, if you want to hunt the Owlbears alone, is to let them will all 3 camps. Then you can hunt as long as you want. Good luck.

One small problem with that is the Owlbear Mother will be up. She drops a mana regen item and is a popular target for casters. Once the Owlbear Mother is dead the zone will reset.

It's a good idea if you farm at odd hours when the zone is a ghost town but expect to have to reset the zone if someone gets greedy. I've seen quite a few fights over this spawn.

any quick ways to get the wolves on the south islands? I usually zone in to find the grimlings up and kill the cheif which so far has always got the owlbears to attack. I then go thru mulitiple owlbear screechmaw killing before i can get the wolves to take over. Sometimes it can take an hour. There has to be a fast way to get the wolves on the south islands.

wolves and bears dont have to own south island to drop wailing/shrieking substances. just the drop rate for them in the east and north is atrocious compared to the south camp. wolves in Tenebreous(sp?) just off of Katta have a fairly good drop rate, but you can tend to get a few bat adds that get real annoying.

now i havent done the war in a while now but last time i passed thru HSM, I watched the grimlings take over all three areas by themselves with no PC assistance (i was only person in zone took about 2-3 hours for it to happen)

fastest way i got wolves to south shore was killed the grimlings, 9 times out of 10 the owlbears (like everyone else has said) attack first. in this case let em win, wait 2-3 minutes before killing the new owlbear chief (reason you wait a couple minutes is i noticed if you kill the chiefs too fast when they first spawn the script doesnt run properly and you will have to wait for them to respawn). this should trigger the wolves to attack the south, and if your lucky youll only have 3 defenders or less to kill.

Also if you can avoid total domination, do so even if it means losing 2-3 mins of farming. thats a lot better then having to rerun the entire war cause some punk kills the general just cause its there.

Hope it helps, oh and at least we get a war to play with for smithing what other tskills can boast that?
