  • I feel slimed

As someone who's been in roleplaying guilds for over half a decade, I've got a pretty strong view of what is/is not roleplay.

Today I was out hunting on my "baby" (just turned 57) druid, minding my own business, when out of the blue I got asked in tells "would you roleplay for 9-10k pp?"

    Say what?!?

This slimeball wasn't asking for anything PG mind you. He was asking for cyber, plain and simple ... from a total stranger ... and not even from within the same zone.

I just sat there, staring at the screen in pure amazement at the gall of someone to proposition a stranger like that, and almost just brushed the incident off. On second thought, though, I thought of all the parents with children who play the game, and what that {cough} creature could/would do with them. So, I reported him/her/it. Given the wording of the proposition, I doubt they'll get in much trouble, BUT, I'm hoping that it'll give the CS folks ample warning to keep an eye on this slime.

      Well one time

We had a radi in PoN about 6 months ago. We all waited outside in PoT for about 1 hour getting ready. So I begin shouting in /ooc about how I was willing to pimp out some halfling ladies in my guild for PP. That was it. Nothing more, nothing explicit. I got lots of laughs from the raid and so on. So then I start gettign tells. I mean I counted 7 individual ones from this simple statement repeated a few times.

So they ask me "how much", "what would they get for their pp" and so on. I don't really respond and then I get 5 different /tells asking if I would have them do cyber-sex for pp, did I make money off of it, were they RL women etc.

Well I thought it was funny so I said to them all "talk to Ofus he will set you up good but make sure you have at least 1k in pp and the more the better"

Ofus got tells for a week after and I laughed for a month straight

When my daughter used to play she always played a male toon for exactly this reason....

Too many creepy people, makes my skin crawl.

In final fantasy XI I play what must be every 13 year old boy's wet dream...a cat woman (mithra). This is a very popular race for any melee job (and to a certain extent the caster jobs as well) thusly, there are a million mithra running around. Now the sensible person would take that knowledge, coupled with the knowledge that there are many more men players than female players, and condense that to the fact that there are many more RL men playing mithra than RL women. And thusly that should lead to them NOT flirting with every kitty that walks by. However, we go back to the "13 year old boy" thing...and that means I get hit on CONSTANTLY.

I don't tell people I'm a woman, and for some odd reason they turn that into meaning I must be a gay man when I don't respond favorably to their advances. I had a guy actually /shout to the zone to watch out for me because I was a gay man posing as a woman to get gay sex. /boggle

Some real stupid sickos out here *nod*

I've also gotten that kind of tell....offered plat for cyber.

I told the guy if I wanted that sort of thing I'd be in an AOL chat room, not on EQ.

              Agree

OK as a male that RPs a Female troll warrior I have gotten some very odd tells and lewd emotes that have me shuddering. I mean come on who hits on a troll with MOM in the name and a beehive haircut. I get Ogres at zone lines emoting me and have had a half dozen Gnomes try getting real friendly in the last 4 years. The worst I was too shocked to react. If I was thinking I would have reported him. I just hit the power button. We really do have some major sickos.

If I were ever propositioned for plat, I'd try and find a way to get the plat first. That way I'd take the plat and not deliver. That would show them. I've been propositioned before, but never for plat. Either willing women are getting scarce (the fact that there were any in the first place alarms me) or y'all have got a reputation  Just kidding DenMom and others

Hopefully Soe CS will scrutineze this (curse you scammers that eat up the CS resources at SOE!). I had never thought of EQ as the type of environment a sexual predator might inhabit, but it's pretty niave of me to think they are somehow limited to chat rooms.

Those that consensually talk this way back and forth with another individual in the game does not garuntee the person on the other end is of legal age to be treated that way no matter what they say.

I guess it doesn't suprise me that this still happens, but being an older player thats been higher level for a long time I don't see it much myself. I do remember there being some serious problems 4-5 years ago with this kind of thing though, like ogre trapping wood elf females against walls (due to geometry issues) and effectively "******" them visually/verbally. Report them and petition is all that can be done, which probably won't do much these days of 24 hour petition responses.

This is why I play manly men avatars. Dwarves, ogres, barbarians. Preferably a model that's missing one eye. Then pick a name with lots of harsh sounds, lots of Rs Hs and Gs. I've done this in games for 8 years now, it's the only way to not get hassled. Incidentally I've at times gotten told that I made a very nice guy who was funny. At one point I did get accused of being a gay man though, I thought that was rather funny.

Now when I do play women chars I run into that same problem. If I play them as though I were me I get accused of being obviously a man. Another female friend has the same problem, she's clearly a man in RL because of not wanting to cyber everyone. Problem is I don't flirt with anyone on female chars, so I don't see how I could possibly be a gay man playing a female char. Unless I'm the world's worst gay man. Maybe I need more viagra. Certainly my wardrobe would go a long way as proof since I dress as a geek. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but it amuses me when the female toon next to me that's constantly doing /hugglez on everyone and is sooo obviously run by a man gets accepted as female without question. And I get accused of being a gay man. On the plus side though when everyone knows you're a gay man you do not get hassled by guys on your female chars. I'm just wondering when I'm going to get my own fag hags?

                        Roleplay /= Cybering

Since when does "roleplay" mean "cyber"? (I edited this in vew of our family forum here, originally I didn't shorten "cyber...") Is this an EQ only euphemism, or is it general on the net right now?

As a long time role player in the actual meaning of the term, where I play my character as though I *were* my character in her world (as opposed to what I do here in EQ which is nowhere near the quality role play I've experienced other places)... I find using "roleplay" to mean "cyber" to be offensive.

If that person had sent me that tell I'd have said "Sure!" and proceeded to type in dialect, use emotes, and generally obnoxiously ROLE PLAY, til he said "WTF?" and went away. I would of course make sure I got the money up front...why waste my creative writing skills on someone who wouldn't pay for it, right?

I have known some excellent role players who actually role played out relationships including what you might consider "cyber" except that it was their character doing what their character found natural to do - not the player at the keyboard solely looking for titillation.

Also as pointed out, you never know who is on the other keyboard.

So far in EQ I haven't run into this, although my girlfriend did the first night I showed her around. I was stunned - as I'd been playing for some time and hadn't had anyone even suggest such a thing. The closest I've gotten was some guy asking "Are you a girl IRL?" when I was AFK.

If I had been there to answer, I'd have said "No." Because, my dear, I am a 46 year old woman, mother of grown kids, and haven't been a girl for at least 25 years.

I have been on the net since the beginning, through bulletin boards, MUDs, and now MMORPGs, and nothing changes. There are always weirdos out there looking, and there are always nice people shocked by it. It's life.

As a footnote, the worst one *ever* for me, was on IRC. I was using a variation on my real name, so appeared 'female' to the casual check. Some stranger sent me a totally out of the blue message, asking in graphic language if I would do something to him with a particular implement. I sat staring in mild surprise at the stupidity for a moment, then carefully typed my answer. "i dont know ill ask my mom." I checked 30 seconds later and the screen name had disappeared. I could hope that taught him a lesson, but it's doubtful. Slime seldom has enough brain cells to learn.

Sorry you got slimed, Niami, and good that you reported it.

                        Best regards,

Ugh, some real sickos out there. I've mostly been able to avoid that problem without playing male characters. Of course, it's because of my refusal to play anything that gets hit on. Iksar girls are nearly indistinguishable from Iksar boys, a Trollish baker with a stack each of cannibal meals (I actualy got to use them once, the scumbag went away!). And my main, a vah shir, rarely gets hit on, due to the fact that being a bard, she can barely interact with anyone without being interrupted by the od11223d singing artifact. Also, I have a few emotes hotkeyed (line 1 /me hacks up a hairball. line 2 /me looks in disgust and says "time to change shampoos") and act more feline than 'anime'-type catgirls.
