  • WoW and Tradeskills

Well, even though this is not EQ related....it at least involves tradeskills. I was reading something over at the Alla WoW site that did not make me too happy.

To better match the design goals for World of Warcraft, characters will be able to be trained in a maximum of 2 " professions" at the same time. What this means is that characters that currently have more than 2 of the following trade skills will have trade skills randomly removed by the upcoming patch until they are left with 2 remaining professions: mining, herbalism, skinning, alchemy, blacksmithing, tailoring, leatherworking, engineering, and/or enchanting.
I would have quit EQ if they would have ever done something like this. I am glad they left us with our addictions. This makes me double think my eagerness to try WoW now.

      Heh.

If you knew how easy it was to master tradeskills in WoW, you wouldn't be so stressed about this. Bored testers at the level cap were taking all of the skills up to Artisan since there wasn't anything else to keep them occupied..

I think nerfing them back to 2 skills without rolling the associated gathering skill into the main tradeskill is a bit extreme but it's going to be better than everyone and their brother having every skill like was happening and has happened in EQ thanks to the evil that is Aid Grimel.

      Skill breakout is like this.

Leatherworking: Requires Skinning to get materials.
Blacksmithing: Requires Mining to get materials.
Alchemy: Requires Herbalism to get materials.
Engineering (tinkering): Requires Mining to get materials.

Enchanting: Disenchant any Green or higher item for materials.
Tailoring: Loot cloth off mobs for materials.

Note that there's a division here where two "production" tradeskills do not require any "gathering" tradeskills to get their materials.
Cloth wearers could take Tailoring/Enchanting and have two pimary production tradeskills and not require a gathering tradeskill and be self sufficient.
Leather/chain/plate wearer that wants to craft their own armor, and some armor is crafted and No Drop, will have to take the associated gathering skill or spend a considerable sum in the Auction House to get materials.
Engineers are borked because all of the good Engineering items require an engineering skill to make the item to be able to use it.

Or you'll see a bunch of L30-35 druid gatherer mules with Mining/Herbalism as their skills. Fast enough to outrun most people to nodes in Travel Form and high enough to gather most metals/herbs. Leather comes off appropriately leveled mobs for the most part so you have to kill them and skin them and run speed isn't as important then.
