  • Trivial -- Defined, so that SoE understands what it means.

Trivial - adj. 1. Too simple to bother detailing. 2. Not worth
the speaker's time. 3. Complex, but solvable by methods so well
known that anyone not utterly cretinous would have thought of them
already. 4. Any problem one has already solved
    important

    adj 1: of great significance or value;
Now, by combining these two terms, assuming something is both Trivial and important, for Instance, the final 7th Shawl combine, one naturally would assume such a thing would be impossable to fail, right?

Well then they need to wake up and buy a dictionary.

They seem to be confusing the words "Easy" and 'Trivial". One there is the slight possability of failure, the second there isn't, especially on an item deemed "important".

Trivial things still can go worng!

Even writing your name in pencil on a piece of paper. (sounds pretty trivial huh?)

Well.... the pencil 'could' break when you start to write.

someone 'could' think it was funny to nudge your elbow while you are writing.

You 'could' Sneeze and blow goobers all over the paper while headbutting the pencil jamming it in your eye and getting blood all over your goobery paper!
(I would really tag this one as a Critical Fail, i suppose)

Isn't this why they took the "This item is trivial" message out...leaving just "You cannot further advance your skill making this item"? (These are, of course, just paraphrased...point is that it doesn't say the item is "trivial" anymore and hasn't for a long time.)

As mentioned above. In the game itself, SOE no longer says "trivial" we say it here on EQTC because we could think of no simple ONE word (I mean ONE, not a short phrase, not two short words... ONE word) that means "You can no longer gain skill from making this item." Not that trivial means that... BUT since it was the way they used to say it, we just let it be.

does it really matter if trivial is the correct word to use or not?

True, by the defenitions put forth from an english dictionary, SOE could be confusing trivial and easy.
However, we are not in the wolrd of Websters, we are in the world of Norrath. (or at least we are when we log on).

Woot: Gushy feeling you get when you get a groovy item on a raid. Or two skillups in a row post-200

This of course presupposes that both "gushy" and "groovy" are defined appropriately

                      .

that means "You can no longer gain skill from making this item."
Yeah, heh, more than one way of saying the same thing.

It's still pretty ridiculous. Granted, if you were doing something repeatatively, over and over, you're bound to mess up on a couple here and there.

But doing one specific task of importance that you're likely to spend your time on, that's well below your level of skill, there shouldn't be any 5% chance of failure. There might be -some- chance, like .05% or something, but for game purposes they should just level it out to 0%. You really can't justify having 1 person out of 20 have to work twice as hard for the same results in a game. Real life may not be fair, but the concept behind games is to instill a semblence of fairness. No game that involves random chance can do this 100%, but there's alot of little things you -can- smooth out the "luck" factor from.

How would such a thing be accomplished for this? Well simply add a button onto tradeskill containers that says "Skill combine", and after pressing it, it'll eliminate the chance of trivial failure, maybe even reduce the chance of regular failure, but it gets grayed out for 5 mins, maybe even an hour depending on how long they feel is neccesary. It would represent the fact that instead of merely throwing the object together, you actually spent your time on it to make sure you got it right.

Does anybody remember the post that linked a news article about why death is part of a virtual world? It argued rather compellingly that, if we knew we were always safe to try anything new, it would easily become boring and people would quit by the droves. In the same way, failure has to be part of the tradeskill system. Thats what keeps things exciting. Sure you are mad when that item that you worked so hard fails but hey, its just that much sweeter when you suceed the next time. Life (and game), without risk, is boring.

                          .

That might be true if the tradeskilling system was all that exciting in the first place or obtaining the stuff for it was something more than just farming green trash.

Not always this way.... depends if you started tradeskilling at am early level like me, or if you got to 65 and saw the Grimmel earing, and decided to power tradeskill.

At various stages through my EQ life i have been able to collect components and exp at the same time.

When Luclin first came out i was getting great exp quading the rockhoppers and was getting GREAT plat for selling Acrylia studded cloaks....
