  • Don't mess with my baking city!

Yes, I know I can buy all the components elsewhere, but I am a crotchety old woman who likes going to Thurgadin to bake.

My trader sold out her Halas Meat Pies tonight and I thought I'd log my main back in, do another batch of pies and hope for a few more skill ups (I'm on the slow and steady road to 250 baking). But, no! There's a camp of dwarves outside Thurgadin as I run from the Great Divide book. I know what I'll see when I zone into the city: lots and lots of useless corpses.

So my main is now camped inside Mordin's Meats, looking mournfully at the Butchered Butcher. With all her clerical mojo, she can't rez him and pick up her bear and lion meat to get on baking. That's it: the residents of Veeshan will have to go hungry tonight!

You do understand that was probably due to a 10th ring quest, right?

    It's a temporary condition.

Look on the bright side - think of all the shiny, new, empty vendors ready to buy useful things off careless people... then sell to you!

Yup, I do realize it was the ring war (hadn't heard it was going on, that was all). It won't last -- I was just in the mood to finish up a batch of pies then and there.

Tweedledea, thank you for the bright side. I hadn't thought about that at all (and I'm really sick of all my favourite merchants being full of expensive junk so I can't buy spaces out anymore to wait for good things to show up).

I've spent a lot of time in Thurg, foraging and doing tradeskills, and I've watched the city die from inside, a number of times. My guild hears me swear and say, there goes Thurg again! and we know someone has failed the ring war...

How on earth can you fail the 10th ring war?
All you need is 1 bard and its a peice of cake.
You only lose if a giant gets past the dorfs.

One bard near the dorfs = never lose.

A raid can still get overwhelmed (either that or we just haven't had good enough bards ), as well as "caught napping" - the wave difficulty increases in pretty big jumps. I've been to at least two wars that lost seemingly because of that - we had a strong enough raid, but the war was going so utterly easily that people got lazy. Suddenly hit a hard wave, and its over before you realize.

I've been to more failed wars than successful (both participating, and just observing/passing through). Its probably that the war is coming into reach of a much broader spectrum of players, so more people are considering it "reasonable" to attempt the war, and are driving down the wins:fails ratio. I haven't personally seen many wars in the last two years or so (spending less time in Velious), but of those I have seen reciently, *zero* won.

(This is ignoring things like bugs, etc, which have also created some interesting losses from time to time)

My guild will be doing this soon, and we may well fail unless I recruit friends from other guilds. Usual guildies for an 'epic' raid -- 65 beastlord, 65 mage (being 2 boxed), 62 cleric (me), 58 shaman (the 2 boxer), 58 warrior (getting the ring), 58 enchanter (maybe), 58 paladin, 57 paladin (maybe), 57 warrior, 55 ranger, 55 necro, 59 druid (rarely on). That's if *everyone* is on who regularly plays, which will only happen Saturday days or Sunday evenings due to schedule conflicts. Notice that there is no bard? There is a 52 bard in guild, but he would replace the mage. I could box my 55 warrior; the 58 warrior can box his 55 rogue; the enchanter could box a 53ish wizard; the shaman can be replaced by a 55 wizard. The necro and I are working on shawl 7, and I'm almost dreading shawl 8.....

Even though I swear briefly, I don't really blame the folks who fail. That's how you learn to do stuff in the game, but trying until you get it right!

                    God i feel so noobish....
                    What's the 10th ring war?

Then again, I'm not surprised I don't know from the levels I'm hearing... I've never had a toon beyond level 13 and I only level to farm better things for my skills.

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/q...tml?quest=1291 (read in the comments if you want full descriptions about what happens)

Its the last ring that you get , think the same as the shawl progression.
It is a very fun event, you basically have to defend Thurg from waves of giants that attack, one giant get into Thurg then you lose, you defeat all the giants then the quester gets a really nice ring.

Depending on how many coldain hero's you kept alive you get some other rewards too.

THe Shawl and the Ring... are items that are part of a progressive quest started in Velious. The Shawl is bent towards tradeskills and the rsult is a good item for casters. The ring is bent around combat, and the result is best for tanks. Both of these quests have elemetns of the other (Shawl has combat, ring has tradeskills)

The shawl has 8 parts, and the ring has 10 parts.

You can find a writup about the shawl in the quest section of our website, in the Veliuos section

The 10th ring is why I always go to Shadow Haven to buy meat, unless I happen to be in the area.

(I've never actually been in Thurg during or after a 10th ring quest, though.....)

I was going nuts for my 8th shawl. Someone failed but won the war. It was soooo weird the giants got thru and killed the city but Narandi spawned anyway and they killed him and got the head. I had to petition them to reset thurg and icewell after checking for 3 days for the npc's to come back lol. I was ready to turn my armour in for the orders hehe Sal
