  • 10years in service looking for work.

I have been going to School full time for Arcitectural drafting. During my schooling I got a part time job working in an office for a Mini-storage company. I have over 10 years experience in Customer service with many of them as a floor manager over dozens of people. Needless to say I'm not being payed what I should for somebody with my qualifications.

I have worked here just about 18 months with no problems, Sales were up customers were happy. Seeing as I have a small family I thought I'd help out the facility manager by working his shift today. All is going well and good like normal until the owner shows up.

I had never met the owner before. He drives arond the compound and after a short while comes in to the office. Being Christmas Eve I hadn't brewed any coffee yet expecting nobody to come. I did have it ready to go should sombody want a cup though. He looks at the coffee pot and fires me on the spot. gives me cash for my last days worked and tells me to "Get the F*** out of my office!"

I head home confused. Not 10 min later I get a call from the Facility manager, a person I consider a friend, asking what happened and asked what I did to set the owner into a rage. We talk for a while and the best guess was that there was a snowdrift at the end of one of our buildings blocking a tennants door. (who hadn't been seen in 3 months) Due to that fact and there was no coffee he decided I was a worthless "PoS" and not a good match for the company.

To him I say "Merry F'in Christmas to you too you ^&@&&^%@&^%$*@!#%^$!@#!&*%&@$@$#!"

Bah I feel better now even if I did get fired on Christmas.

Few ways to look at it

    1. Any boss who acts that irrationaly isnt a godo person to work for.
    2. If he fired you without just cause you can take him to court and sue for about 1 year's salary.
    3. You can call him up and tell him what a jerk he is (least u will feel better)
    4. You can shrug it all off and find work for someone who will appreciate you and won't be such a (word censored by Renjah due to the fact EQTC is a family oriented site )

Sorry you had to go thru this on Christmas but I bet you find something better. I lost my job after I was off a week due to a car wreck/loss of family member. Within 1 month I was working at a place with MORE pay, better employer, and MUCH friendlier employees!

        Ugh, Scrooge lives...

I'm so sorry you had to be subjected to this.

Take the few days off, try to relax and enjoy some time with the family. Then, make sure you hit the unemployment office and, as Rehjah suggested, look into legal action, whether through legal aid or a private attorney or small claims.

To tide you over if need be, look into temp work -- believe it or not, temp positions have been known to lead to full-time offers!

The timing definitely stinks, the owner certainly sounds unstable (I'm trying to be charitable) and things probably looks sort of bleak to you right now, but I'm willing to bet you'll bounce back better than ever.

/sending hugs and good wishes your way

          Sorry to hear Grimrose.

To tide you over if need be, look into temp work -- believe it or not, temp positions have been known to lead to full-time offers!
The above statement is so true, the department of company I work in hires exclusively from temp agencies. I wish you the best luck in finding a new and better job!

Ugh. Super-horrific stinky timing, and a very unreasonable-sounding employer. But yes, I can speak from personal experience that temp work is a good way to go when someone pulls the rug out from under you.

also as much as I hate to say it apply for unemployment ASAP! It starts from when you apply NOT when you lost your job. I know there something better out there it will just take time. I had to work part time for 9 months afte rI graduated until my job finally came along. After 9 month of waiting I work from home and make more than I had expected! Just takes patience...

I got fired a couple years back at the beginning of December from Large_Online_Service; started looking for work immediately after the holidays, and now have almost two years' tenure in a small family-owned business, with a GREAT boss, making about 15% more than I was at my previous job, MUCH more self-respect, lots of pats on the back and an actual Christmas bonus (wow!). Here's hoping your search leads to something as good-- especially with your years in the field. And of course let us know if you need anything, ok?

I dont know if youd want to go back to that place, but there might be a possibility that the guy was unstable about something else(Christmas does that to alot of people) and made a rash decision when firing you. If youd be willing to go back there, call up the facility manager and see if hes talked to the owner and see if he can find a definate reason for the firing or even if it was a mistake. If you dont want to go back, or if the owner is just a (expliatively deleted), well then, find a nice 4 legged friend and some wrapping paper. Make a nice little late Xmas gift...

He wasnt firing you. He was promoting you to unemployment. Now you are getting paid to play EQ and tradeskill. Slightly less pay but the hours are great and you're your own boss.

                            Congratulations on your new job!

That sucks. I will say file a complaint to the local Better Business bureau though and definetely start some legal action, because you may not be the only one who's experienced this.
