  • Wonderful timing

I am happy as my tailoring is now up to 212, but the last two skill-ups really peeved me.

Between 200-210, I was averaging approximatley 1 skill-up per 50 combines. It has been hellish.

I finally hit 210 and am happy to get a couple freebie skill-ups. I pull out the 8.5 stacks of ether that I had saved up, and buy a couple stacks of curing agent for 80pp each (owwie). I only bought a couple stacks because I didn't want to end up with extras and would just buy more as I needed them.

    4 combines later I was at 212.

Don't get me wrong, i'm all about fast skill-ups, but this made me mad. Why couldn't this have happened when I was doing solstice robes, or velium tailoring? The only points that are storebought this high up and I didn't even have time to say "it's nice to not have to farm for these combines".

I suppose it's back to the 1 success in 50 now that my luck was used up on the stupid ethereal swatches.

Because you were doing combines to which you were extremely close to the trivial, as opposed to doing combines that do not trivial at 250...=P

Maybe we should include this as a warning somewhere for these "freebie" points in tailoring and smithing...

I personally don't belive that attempting stuff that is closer to trivial makes a difference.

About half of my attempts between 200-210 were on the LoY robes that triv at 212 and 222. I had no better luck skilling up on those than any of the >250 stuff.

I tried combining just about everything to get skillups. Just mentioned velium and Solstice as examples.

I too think that the 'closer to trivial' thing is bunk.

Prolly the easiest way to test is to do brewing with brand new toons. Fetid essence with a triv of 122 and something else that trivs much lower, like 40ish.

If you want to see the way your proximity to the trivial works, use jewel crafting. Lots and lots of little gaps between skill ups there.

In my experience, you want to be between 5 - 10 points away from the trivial. (With the expense of JC, try to stay as close to 5 as possible so you don't burn a lot of money needlessly). Skill ups come much faster at this range than with a bigger--or even smaller--range.

I just got JC to 200 and had a chance to see this in action around 191. I wasn't aware at the time that Fire Opals, Fire Emeralds, and whatever the other jem is were available on the metal vendors at the time (yeah, wasn't looking too closely /blush), so I started in on a combine that was ~212 using (I think) ruby's and gold (and yes, I'm entirely to lazy to go look up the charts right now). Anyhow, 60 combines, no increase. Called it a night, came back a little later doing what ever it is that trivs at 196, got my skill up in the first 10 combines.

edit: this wasn't my hell level number either--I had that at 188 with 80+ combines between skill ups.

Well if you want data that goes the opposite way, here goes. My skill started at 212

Last night I attempted 84 attempts of color skewn robes (Trivial 222). 1 skillup

I had the components so I threw together 20 combines of solstice robes(trivial >250) I had 2 skillups.

Sorry, I still don't buy that theory.
