Im a newbeee on smithing ..Like new As new can get 21 ATM in Blksmithing



I was thinking today while working hard at work i could log on and have some fun raising my trade skill....since i have lotz of room to improve


If you don't see a file for sale, you can make one (1 metal bits, file mold, flask of water; trivial at 21).


Lies I got message I lack skill.

Can someone pls tell me what I can do to raise my skill thanks = )

What happened is you failed a combine.

That is the standard message. It might be seen as a lie, and in a sense it is. But even a Grand Master Smith with 250 Skill and Trophy can fail making a file and will get the same message.

To raise your skill, try recipes which are above your trivial level.

Repeat them OFTEN...

Even with max skill I can fail on making a file and I will get the exact same message too.

I was posting that some info is not very clear or not up to date.

I have like zero understanding about what to do..If the how to guide leaves people to draw there own speculations on how to raise there skill or raises any questions.... Well how good is it then?

Important Safety Tip - Read everything first, especially the directions!

You can find the basic smithing guides on the http://www.eqtraders.com/learn/learn_smithing.htmLearn Smithing</a> page.

Those guides are pretty good, and answer the most basic questions.

I assume that English is not your first language, so the style or some of the idioms *might* be confusing.

You can also check the recipe lists for smithing from the http://www.eqtraders.com/recipes.htmRecipes</a> link at the top of every forum.

Check the "Trivial" listings. (In the past, when an item no longer advanced your skill, you got a message that said "This item is trivial to one of your skill." That message was changed to "You can no longer advance your skill by making this item." People got used to calling it the "Trivial Level" and so as a tradition, that's what we call it on the site.) Those numbers will tell you which items are above your skill, and so will give you a chance to increase your skill.


ANY time you fail a combine you get the message, "You lacked the skill...". Doesn't matter what your skill is, that is the message you get.


Now, that said, your rant was somewhat offensive, since the information you requested was RIGHT WHERE YOU WERE READING IT. If some replys were not very friendly, it's because of frustration. You had the information - the accurate information - right there in front of you and you ranted that it was wrong.

We work VERY hard here to keep the recipes, the trivial listings, and all other tradeskills information accurate and up to date. To have someone with the correct information in-hand say it is wrong can make even the nicest of us angry.

Now, I've answered all the questions in your posts. I've pointed you to the correct info, and I even kindly explained the kinds of responses you recieved.

Let us let the matter rest.

I suggest you rewind, reread not only what you asked, but also make sure you're reading the "Before You Start" page over in the Learn a Tradeskill section of the site before you dive into the smithing guide:

When you see mention of a "trivial" on a chart, it means that at that skill level, you will no longer gain skill increases from making the item. You will, however, still continue to fail quite a bit when making the item. Just because something is trivial does not mean you can do it in your sleep. Eventually, as your skill improves, your chance of failing at making the item will decrease, but there's generally always a chance of failure. (silk swatches and silk thread are an exception to this). In addition, there are many spots on the recipes pages where items are listed as &lt;=X or >Y (or a combination of the two). Please remember that: "&lt;=" means less than or equal to -- all we know about the trivial is that someone of X skill attempted the item and it was already trivial. It may be that the trivial is 1 point below it, or it may be 100 points below. The only way we find such trivials is by folks reporting in their skill levels and trivial status after they make combine attempts. Similarly, if you see ">", it means greater than -- someone at Y skill attempted the combine, and it was not trivial. Again, there's no way to easily tell if the trivial is 1 point or 100 points above that in trivial unless folks actually report in their results.

Perhaps, yes, on that page, there should be some mention there about the "you lack the skill message" meaning absolutely nothing on a failure to make the item. This goes for ANY tradeskill, though, and to expect every single person who writes a tradeskill guide for this site to include information that all folks should know before they start tradeskilling, is asking a bit much.

Also, if you come in here complaining about the site being wrong, without being specific about what you read in what spot that seems to have confused or misled you, expect some folks to be less-than-helpful in their responses. A lot of hard work has gone into verifying information on this site, and folks take it rather personally when folks stalk in and make random rants that look like they've done zero research before complaining. (Given that you made ZERO mention of reading any of the guides or information on this site in your first post, their responses were very gentle and an attempt to clarify information for you.)

So next time, please, instead of making complaints about outdated information, and then getting angry when folks are less-than-welcoming in their responses, take a few moments to drop out of d00d-speak, make it clear what you've read and what questions it left you with.

Well, there's a difference between "everything you need to know" and "everything you need to know in such comprehensive detail as to bore you to tears before yout first combine".

I mean, I would expect a guide to explain the "you lacked the skills" message (and what should an alternative message be when it is trivial? "You're skilled enough, but [bleep]ed it up anyway, good going, fella") as much as I would expect it to tell you how to log into the game (since you need to be logged in to tradeskill) and how to move around to look for a forge. Some basic elementary information is expected.

Also, and this is important.... when you call information that everyone here follows and knows "Lies" (your word, not mine), it tends to leave a sour taste, as if we've all supported this site to mess with the heads of newbies and laugh about them when they're not around. Not the wisest of word choices.
