But as I wasn't engaged with the mob at the time of LD, nor did the mob do anything to aggro the NPC version of me, I was able to LD in relative safety.
OH well that makes sense. I knew it couldn't necessarily measure whether you were engaged because a caster who is engaged might be sitting and medding. But if they hit you (melee or otherwise) in the 30 seconds after LD and before poof...that makes sense.

Also you don't have to be engaged on a mob to have a long 1017/18 error.
Sometimes, the server still think that you are online though on client side your are in server selection or on desktop (I usually call that being in ghost state like in IRC system). People can do a /who or /tell all and see that you still in game and not LD, but you are not.
The problem is that your computer is still sending data to the server for whatever unknown reason, and the "link" is still here. It happened a few times for me (I was in ghost mode for about 5 min), and the only solution was to reboot computer AND log in EQIM (I am glad that this chat tool disconnect your channels ingame, providing an official LD).

Some month ago it was possible to go LD and log back without being disbanded from your group, there was also the funny bug where you could still have group channel though you had been disbanded, but I think these were corrected in the last patch.

The "zone bug" that a year ago would enable you to stay "online" and preserve your NORENT items now still "work" in another way : if you are fast enough to relog from crash while your computer is not sending data (I think there are some few milisec pause), you can log back without having the character selection showing (game loading, then directly zone loading) and if you are grouped you will not be disbanded.

About the melee LD, the AI does not use gem8 anymore, and pick directly only one spell from your spellbook depending on your class and level. As far as I experienced this, cleric/shaman melee then use CH (if not lvl 39+ it will be lesser direct heal), wizard will use fire nuke dd, but only a few spell will be used (no, the wiz won't snare and kite the mob ). Notice that even if you dont have your spell memmed, the server will still use the same spell (cleric/heal below 20% hp ), and your char will begin to run away at 5%.

Here's how you fix that. They did a wonderful job with that I must say.

You're in a fight. You notice something strange is going on. You look up at your connection bar which is going red. The mob is rooted for rotting. So all you do is run as far away from it as you can get in the safest direction you can run. Then right before you get the link lost signal you stop cold.

When you get link hooked back up the server and client will then agree on your position which will always be where you stopped right before you got link went dead message.

So you log in hit the evac or gate spell instantly while your safe for a few seconds. Viola you don't die from a linkdead. Works alot not all the time but works alot.

Very happy with how that works. Not exploitable but very useable if you know how it works.

I remember, pre-PoP raids and shared xp, that a particularly bad-connection cleric would KS everyone during raids when he went LD...

Who says clerics can't tank?! =)

leave gate in gem 8. would love for it to cast that as i quad a lot. started using autorun instead of arrow for lds. seems like i just stay running forever. zone into unusual places but still good.

Autorun and LD interact oddly. If you're autorunning when you LD, you seem to dissappear from /whos very quickly (often instantaneously if not in combat), but remain in /who alls for a very long time. So the server in part understands that you're gone, and clear you from the zone (hence removing you from local /whos), but is refusing to worldkick you and let you log back in (hence the presence in /who all).

Then again, I've had friends who've said they've, while LD, autorun off cliffs and died (shouldn't you, as an npc, be immune to falling damage?) and turned up in all sorts of strange places, so its not consistant. But the first paragraph is the behavoir I've seen most.

oh i almost never survive a ld quad but that seems to help. also i have the longest wait for return from pok. can get back on quickly in ots of other zones. pok is normally a potty and snack break time.

I thought LD was bad. This last patch caused my EQ client to crash in the middle of a fight. then, when I go to get my corpse, I crash again. Only this time, I also crash everytime I log in. And everytime I try something new that tech support suggests, it goes against my res timer. Especially when they ask if I can get another character into Jaggedpine. (Ever get a level 1 into Jagged pine? It only took 4 tries.)

The good news is that by putting the forest in PoM back, I quickly made up for the lost XP. So I finally made 54 after 3 weeks.
