Started in PoV, got the first 25% of my level. Business as Usual.
Went to Velks, got the last 35 silk threads, and made Shawl Five. WOOT!!
Went to CS with a bud of mine, and got the last item I needed for shawl six (one Siren Hair needed).
Succeed on Spool of threads, 184 Tailoring + Geerlok. WOOT!

Ran to thurg after we got our hairs, borrowed his geerlok, and got the pattern.
You lacked the skills to fashion the items together.

Gave him back his Geerlok, and he combined. (187 + Geerlok)
You lacked the skills to fashion the items together.

Bah. At least I had 2 spare whiskers. And I bought two more Manes, and a beard. Less then 75p for all three things.
Tomorrow, more sirens die, and attempt #2 happens.

This would be a bad time to post a belated 'Yay!' for me suceeding on the 6th shawl a few days back, right?

Oh, and I got a skillup from it, too.

      *sigh*

      Become accustomed to pain....

Shawls 3-4 I didn't fail anything. Prior to PoP I used to keep a bag of "pre-made" Thurg Gate potions because having 2 bind points was useful.

Shawl 5 I failed *one* thread combine so I only needed 80 threads and 5 biles.

Shawl 6 and Shawl 7 .... no failures.

      Shawl 8. *grrrr*

      jewelcraft 182 trivial
need 171 with geerlok for 95% success

      tailoring 176 trivial
need 167 with geerlok for 95% success

      smithing 187 trivial
need 175 with geerlok for 95% success

so I got my JC to 171, tailoring to 159 (woot skill up on shawl 6/7), and gave up when smithing hit 163

Friend helped me track velium hounds. He's KOS to dragons and got smushed once in the process of getting me 4 fur.

      4 fur = 4 soft padding *woot*
      4 soft padding = 4 armor attempts

      boots ... fail
      bracer ... fail
      gloves ... succeed
      helm ... succeed

Mental Note: buy ONE mold at a time, make it, buy another... do NOT buy "one mold for each type" and combine as a series...

      *groan*

I broke down and bought 7 furs in the bazaar. At 500 pp each. (which is double the price they were 3 months ago... sigh)

      6 fur = 6 padding *woot*
      6 padding = 162 skill *woot*woot*
      store the extra
store the geerlok sewing contraption *this is important*

equip the geerlok smithing hammer *you will see why*
      bracer ... fail *groan*
      bracer ... succeed
      bracer ... succeed
      boots ... succeed
      vambraces ... succeed

So I run around, sell off the spare peridots (bribes) I keep in the bank for plat, buy a velium rings for 25 pp (but... large brick of velium = 50pp and velium temper = 26 pp .... don't ask questions Itek) take my LAST block of velium and make a folded sheet.

      Ok...

      3 sheets ... check
      1 ring ... check
      velum smithy hammer ... check
plat to buy BP mold ... check
      velium hound fur ... check

oops... nearly forgot the silver thread before running back to EFreeport for mold ...

silver thread + fur + sewing kit = *POOF*

      *scream*
      *looks at screen*
*sees icon of hammer in primary slot*
      *screams louder*

I -forgot- to re-equip the BLASTED geerlok.....

      So I've failed
      3 armors
      1 padding

And I've got 37 plat to my name.

      A level 64 enchanter with KEI .... and i've got 37 plat.

Did I mention I got 23 plat in donations running thru the nexus for 2 KEI's ? (20 pp for KEI ... well I never paid more than 15, but i'm cheap, i had c2 myself, and i'm usually broke, and that's about average ... but -3- plat for KEI ... Well I should be happy, originally he handed me a VEGETABLES *faint*)

      *crawls off somewhere to whimper*

On the lucky side once I make the breastplate I've got really good odds on the jewelry combines, and can do them "in the field" as I get the unrefined gems.
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.

Perseverance is the key. I got my 8th shawl last Friday. I was able to solo everything, or buy it, except the no drop shark tooth and, of course, the final 'walk'.

As a diehard tradeskiller, I was well above trivial for all combines. I consider myself very fortunate, because I only failed one combine enroute to the eighth shawl. The failure was one velium hound subcombine.

There is a great deal of satisfaction when you get that final shawl. It's an item that I know I will never have to upgrade.

        Good luck to all.

What level are the hounds? Think a level 49 ranger could take them out easily? Does Panic Animal work on them?

          Thanks,
          -- C.

PS: As for money, here's how I did it, and I didn't even plan it this way. But it will only work for a very specific race/class mix. And it isn't a Get Rich Quick scheme either, it was a long process.

As a young enchanter (20s), I did the Stein of Moggok quest a few times (sold them for 200p). Using the profits, I funded my start in the "Vial of Viscous Mana" trade. (It's much easier if you can leave your character logged in over night in the Bazaar.) Not much profit per vial, but making 4 stacks at a time worked well and they sold quickly.

From those profits I worked on Tinkering and JC, even though there really isn't a lot of profit in JC. But by the time I started selling Geerloks and Collapsed Kits, I was making good money. And since I worked on other trade skills, I got in the Prismatic Dye market (brewing and pottery). It's still pretty good money, even though it is slowing down.

But the really good money is in the shrinking devices. Oh, and I've made a fair amount off KEI (but nowhere near paying for the cost of it).

I started in January of 2002. My li'l gnome enchanter is up to 65, bought KEI for 24k (it's dropped a lot since then), VoQ for 20k, VQ for 20k, and a fun little toy for 20, and the cheap horse (9k). I've also decked out my ranger (now 49) with a Nightmarewood bow, Windblade (16k), Tolan's Darkwood Bracer, Ring of Gallantry x2, Cloak of Greater Pernicity, Centi Longsword x2, and a few other toys. And I've also funded my trade skills (250 JC w/trophy, 249 tinkering w/trophy, 200 in Baking, Brewing, Fletching, and Pottery, and about 180 in smithing and tailoring).

I don't mean to brag (well ok, yes I do /grin), but I just wanted to point out one way of making money.

Sorry for lengthy post-script after my short question.

Lol Itzena, I did shawl 6 at 118 tailoring, got a skillup to 119 and succeeded on first attempt.

            Was some time ago though.

I failed 3 times on the 6th shawl the first time around...you'll get it, sirens are easy. =)

              *edit*
A 49 ranger would take quite a while to kill one, but yes, you can fear kite them. I would only suggest doing this if you are not KoS to CoV because otherwise, you'll be dead in a heartbeat.

I farmed my furs recently and am max KoS to CoV. You gotta keep a look out at all times for nearby mobs and see invis dragons. Because I'm 65, the aggro range is a bit smaller, you being 49, if you're kos and you wanna kite, not gonna work.

After 3 hours in SG, we both got 2 more hairs.

Made the thread, then almost passed out from holding my breath, but made the 6th shawl.

                GRATZ ME!!!!!

I failed 6th shawl 6 times, till I finally got it on the 7th attempted armed with geelock and C5.

The runed sea shell for part 7 is quickly becoming my worst enemy. I've lost 3 so far to combines that were between 20 and 40 points trivial. You'd think by now the sirens would just give them to me when they see me coming to avoid the carnage.

                              Ranger and fur

Few things to consider trying to solo velium hounds with a ranger.

                              1) Getting there. First you have to get through Skyshrine. At 49th you are probably not friendly with COV. Also you cannot zone out of SS into Siren's Grotto without a key. There is a quest to get a key to let you zone out of SS into Cobalt Scar but requires ok faction. Or you can just kill the guy with the key (not easy for a 49th ranger). Cobalt Scar has lots of wyverns on CoV faction as well so if you are KoS you better be invis. Can always get a GG there but realize that the closest bind point for you is either SS itself or Kael. Then you have to get through Siren's Grotto and unless you know how you are going to fail, especially at 49th. GGer can evac you across the zone though so that is not so bad.

                              3) Western Wastes. Home of the dragonkin. Most stuff out here is either on CoV faction, indifferent, or on Kael faction. Most of the Kael stuff is to the southwest side of zone (PC type races some of which give Kael quests). Indifferent stuff is the mammoths and rhinos. CoV stuff is most everything else including some nasty dragons although at 49th any of these guys that aggros on you will leave with a full belly. Oh I forgot the stuff that is pure KoS. The velium hounds, ice burrowers, the named elemental guy that roams between north caves and DN, and a few dragons that will attack you no matter what. Unless you are on CoV faction this is not a safe zone to solo in.

                              2) Velium hounds. These buggers are not a lot of fun. They have a very large aggro radius. If you are in spellcasting range they have probably aggroed on you. They are highly MR resistant and run at SoW speed. Yes they run at sow. They will resist snare alot. They will resist panic animal alot. They will laugh at root. Oh they also hit really hard for their level. Not a huge amount of hp though. I think about.... 4 to 6k. Been awhile since I hunted them with my cleric. Used to take 4 or 5 castings of condemnation (1100hp lvl 64 nuke) and a bit of meleeing to kill them. I think velium hounds range from 47 to 51st lvl or so. They also don't drop fur very often. 1 out of 3 or 4 I would say.

                              3) Death. Well lets assume you die. Unless you are able to get through both SS and SG by yourself your going to need help just to get back to your corpse. Usually will mean a bit of a payout to a GGer. And if you want a ress? Well if you are lucky there might be a group of two out there hunting dragons for Kael faction and a cleric might ress you. If they can find your corpse. If they care to help. Otherwise be ready to pay a hefty chunck of change to a cleric to have them gated out there and then ress you. Unless you have friends willing to help of course.
