  • Changing Servers

I've recently been on a two month vacation from EQ taking a much needed break from the game. I've spent the last year and a half leveling up a druid to 55, plus a handful of other characters to 40+. But all my characters are unguilded, most of the friends I've made in game no longer play or have advanced so far above me that theres a rift we can't even communicate across.

I've been getting the urges to play more frequently now, but I don't have any desire to play my main or my higher level alts. My boyfriend has talked about moving over to Stormhammer to join some friends of his that switched. Then I got to thinking about starting on a brand new server, knowing no one and begining a new character.

But there are a lot of servers to choose from. I started on the Nameless, which I've heard is an old server. I read a lot of the boards so I know that Stromm is new and some of the servers are based in European time zones, but other than that, I don't know where to start in choosing a new place to start playing.

Anyone have any suggestions or advice? Anyone ever pick up and leave because they were unhappy on their old server? I'd appreciate any thoughts on the subject.

    Thanks,
    Morgani Windlance

I've packed up and left several times.

I originaly started on Trovonnolious (sp?) and quickly jumped to Rodcet Nife to join a good friend of mine (IRL).

Got up to 16 there, and was quite satisfied with my accomplishment. I got guilded, but then less than a month later, the guild disbanded, my friend left, so I decided to head to a different server.

Welcome to Tholuxe Paells (new server at the time). Re-started my rogue, built him up very well, got guilded, twice, and reached roughly level 23. I was great, but this server didn't seem to cut it for me.

So, back to Rodcet. With a friend's help, transfered all my equipment to a new rogue, new and improved Draggar, started TSing, and got him up to 27. Things were going reat, but then issues with my ISP (@Home at the time) and was experiencing constant drops.

I decided to take a 6 month break (well, I just stopped playing).

Came back, and deliberatly went to the least populated server, which is my current home, Kane Bayle.
Went to Kane Bayle, knowing what to do, what to kill, what to loot, how to TS without breaking the bank, and devoloped an incredible (by my standards) Rogue.

Helped start a guild, then jumped over to another that was a training guild, but the parent guild disbanded, helped keep that guild up for months, then, due to personal issues with some officers, left (with a few other guildies) and heklped start a new guild.

Draggar on KB is now level 39, almost done the Rogue Redemption, in my opinion, the best Rogue I had ever devoloped (including AD&D, other FRPGs, MUDs, etc..). Still in that new guild, I feel I have an extensive knowledge of the bazaar, and appraisal (people always ask me and usualy I am pretty close to the selling prices in the bazaar). Tradeskills are averaging in the 150s (some higher, some lower).

Swithcing servers is hard. I won't deny that. Starting from scratch, being killed by a swarm of decaying skeletons (after you've hunted HGs) is the most fustrating feeling in the world. But you build yourself up. You use past experiences to build better characters (which is important), you make new friends, and go on new adventures.

I've been on EQ for over 3 (4?) years, toured on 3 servers (one twice) and concentrated on Rogues (and a little with Druids and Bards). My guild highly respects my knowledge, my experience, and my styles. Once you got the basics down, and once you work them out, you'll be able to go anywhere and be able to make a better you.

Whatever you do, never move *to* Prexus...if its ever up that is. One of, if not the, oldest servers and its economy is LTWS.

I played on Stromm a bit, but I have been in Innoruuk the entire time mostly and really like this server. It seems to have a good population balance -- not so populated that things get overcrowded all the time (with some local exceptions), but busy enough you can always find groups in whatever level range you want.

Of course we have our share of wanks ... no server is without them.

The advantage of Stormhammer over other servers is that you can take your stuff. Also, I understand there are fewer problems with young kids -- fewer of them can afford it or can make their parents pay for it.

Yep. Of course the downside to stormhammer is that you can pretty much forget about grouping if you are under 50.

Although it does cost, can't you take your built up character over to your new server?

You'd be naked if you did, and it does cost.

$50 if I am not mistaken. But at least you wouldn't be starting at 1st level. Of course I am saying it would be worth it to someone who is relatively high level.

That's iffy though. If I moved servers and started anohter bard, I would rather restart him over from scratch. Not just to fix mistakes, but there is a certain amount of fun grouping in those lower levels and being able to swarm or charm kite for the first time.

If you're from Europe and like to play on a european server, Venril Sathir is a good choice. Don't expect to be showered with groupinvites though, it's a small crowd, but guess what? Movelog to Venril and you get to keep your gear.

It's the special they used when screwing over the natives by letting the uberguilds move over to Venril for free (yes, as in zero charges, all gear and coin with you).

Now, you get to move with gear/coin, but it still costs you 50 bucks. We have a few lower guilds for US players, but all the big guilds, (PoTime-enabled/Elemental) are european.

But before I say anything else.. Moving from Sony billing to UbiSoft billing os oneway only. Once you move you can't go back. That being said, I like my server. KEI-scroll in bazaar for 1500pp etc. High on lowend gear, cheap on highend.

When the movelog first came into place the local uberguild had maybe 10 people at 65, so most of the server were lowend/midend, so our economy may be a bit weird.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with Silound. Do *not* move to Prexus. I tried to move there for a month to play with a RL friend and fled, horrified, back to my home server of Povar, ever so grateful that we're not as demented as Prexus. The Prexian economy is.... well I can't think of a polite term to describe it accurately so I'll just say ... *BAD*

That being said Silound, if you ever want to start on a not-FUBARed-economy server, Povar isn't half bad. And you get to play with me and Lilosh, what could be better than that?

Let me tell from experience. Starting out on SH with a lowbie char is going to be pretty hard (unless you have friends that have lower lvl alts). The reason why is because most all lower lvl zones are sparesly unpopulated. Which might not be bad for you if you like being solitary. But is the price for SH worth having noob characters on it?

On the other hand, being a 250 Tradeskiller is like heaven over there. I made some pretty good plat by just being a Tailor.

Which ever you do decide, good luck to yas.

PS - I'm on the same Server as Arakni and Lilosh.

                            Rule Number One:
Unless you are very very tough of skin and enjoy fighting uphill battles ALL the way, do not start on Sullon. (if you do, start a Good charactor, and send me a tell, i'll do what i can to help.)

I have a character on Tunare, a WElf Ranger. Wasn't endeared by the noobs in GFay, haven't been back in a while. Roomie started a ... halfling rogue?... on Tunare, likewise was not particularly endeared. /shrug.

I have a cleric on MithMarr, not SUPPOSED to be for real playing (just for a tradeskill experiement), but since they've nerfed the whole "high buffs on low chars" thing, and i need her to be at least 30 so she can imbue her own rubies, I'm going to have to start playing her for real. MithMarr seems to be inhabited by Chronically Nice People. At least, I have not run into a great many jerks there. I'm sure they exist, i just think the RNG placed a low number of them on MithMarr. I would recommend it.

While in germany, i keep coming up with names for charactors i want to start on random servers. I would also like to know what other servers people recommend. ^_^

Thank you all for the advice. My plan was to *try* and choose a server with an 'OK' economy (OK by my terms since its pretty much opinion whats a good price and whats not) and begin with a fresh character. I miss the whole experinence of having to get everything on my own, my own gear, my own plat, etc.

I'm still floundering as to which server I'm actually going to start on. I was hoping to be lucky enough to RNG my way onto a decently populated server with nice people and a faily nice economy. I know thats a lot to put up to chance and chances are I won't find all that in a nice package.

I'm still researching it. Hopefully I'll get lucky.
