• new Veksar zone

ok - the zone is LOCATED on the continent of Kunark. I know this.
But I specifically had RoK patching turned off, and the zone files were patched to me anyway.

So from the EQ standpoint, is Veksar (as an expansion zone) considered part of the "old-world original game" or part of the "Kunark" expasion? and if its part of the RoK expansion, then why was it patched when I had RoK patching turned off?

Its left me wondering how to refer to items from this zone - are the RoK, Veskar, Old-world?

Since the entrance is located in the lake of LoIO, I would *assume* that it is a RoK expansion. The items that I have seen dropped are very much in line with current items dropped. The dragon that you rescue and then destroy (if I read the storyline properly) is level 68ish. So, it is pretty much on par with zones of the same level anywhere else in the game.

As far as content Veskar is part of kunark due to location. As for patching it comes under optional zones like stonebrunt.

Kunark zones are basically the ones that came with Kunark. Patches that relate specifically to those zones, and only those zones, come from the Kunark patching option.

Optional zones are the freebies that SoE provides every now and again. Veksar is a freebie zone, albeit one that can only be used if you own RoK, so its an "optional" patch.

There's a very simple reason for this, actually.

Turning off the Optional Patcher means that you don't get giant zones downloaded to your computer when you run the patcher. While this isn't a problem for a high speed connection, on dial-up it can ruin your evening. So one simple checkbox means that you can control when the zone-sized patches come to your system. And when it comes right down to it, since the optional zones are free, that's really the only reason to have the optional patcher off.

Its an Optional, PoP-era (LoY?) Kunark zone :P

They seem to be good about including content in the appropriate patch section mostly only soon after release. When the expansion gets older, it becomes all in General or Optional, and the expansion-specific downloader (or now checkmark) is rarely used.

Handy for broadband since they can uncheck most topics and speed up the patcher's file check, annoying for slower connections as they have to download stuff they don't care about :/
