    Anagrams

Why bother creating a new language for your game when you can simply rearrange existing English words? I hadn't noticed the EverQuest anagram system when I first started playing... but a friend pointed it out to me a few months ago, and I haven't been able to respect the gods of Norrath since. The names of most of the gods and goddesses are simply anagrams of the deity's role. Tunare, goddess of druids and rangers - Nature. E'ci, goddess of frozen water - Ice. Xegony, from the Plane of Air - Oxygen. To some people, that might make a twisted sort of sense, but I personally could never worship any entity whose name was so... banal. Gods deserve strong names, powerful names: Jehovah, Allah, Odin, Hades. Not Ice.

Yet another funny one from same site

    Random letters

I don't care how foreign or unusual the Tier'dal language is... names like X'Onnu and X'Lottl would not exist in any sentient culture. Names have to be pronounceable to function on a basic level. Drugged or otherwise incapacitated parents might name their children Happy, or Sunshine, or even Placenta, but no parent would ever be wasted enough to name their offspring F'Lok. Not even dark elven parents. And C'Luzz isn't a name, it's what appears on the screen if you clean your keyboard while in Word.

First, may I refer you to Aztec Names... surely you would not debate that a civilized culture is sentient?

Names have to be pronounceable to function on a basic level.
Second, to me the first name would be either ZONE-new or CHON-new, and the second would be Zill-LOT-tul or Chil-LOT-tul. I can see TWO ways to pronounce these names; why can't you see any?

      Eyith (rhymes with a-myth)
also Nhinx (rhymes with minx) Aphsion (Aff-see-on), formerly Impious (emm-pee-us)

        It's sad, I suppose.

Never occured to me to rearrange the letters.

But in D and D, one of the two main demons, who were always battling with other demons, we T'nari.

I thought it was a veiled DandD reference. I feel stupid.

            Lilosh,

I believe you refer to the Ta'nari. They were forever battling the Ba'atezu.

Ah, the fun of a party of adventurers finding out that their henchman of two years was actually an Erinyes, who was using them as weapons to fight against a Ta'nari scheme to grab power and solidify a prescence...

I digress... I'm sorry, but non-humans are not going to name their kids Jeff, Mary, and Frank. X'onnu, to me, looks like ksahn-noo (like the X in Xavier). F'lok is equally easy: flock.

What's in a name? Sometimes nothing. Mnydogg, the name of my dwarven fighter, had no real meaning: it just looked right.
Mnydogg? And he complains about X'onnu? At least I can work a pronunciation for X'onnu, Mnydogg just stops me cold.

What I find sad is that people think that elves should be pointy-eared humans, dark elves dark skinned pointy-eared humans, dwarves should be short bearded humans, ogres should be tall ugly humans, and iksar should be humans with a skin condition.

These are *alien* cultures, people. Races that do not think like humans. Their names *should* sound strange and puzzling to us. I'm sure wood elves are saying "What in the world is a Thomas?"

Either way, you gotta admit it sounds alot like Tunare.

                Granted. =)

Of course, it should be noted that with the release of third edition, Ta'nari and Ba'atezu are no more, having been renamed: (drumroll please)

                Demons and devils.

Yes, that's right, those proud majestic names are gone. Now all we have are horribly generic. What next?

Actually, they still have those names. They are just grouped under Demon and Devil in the various books.

My take: you're thinking it through backwards.

The god was not named for the substance, but the substance was named for the god.

Tunare is not an anagram of nature; nature is an anagram of Tunare.

                    Make sense?

I always find it humorous to imply that cultures other than my own are lesser in some way.

                      In EverQuest, that is.

Actually, that's what they were called in the first edition too (demons and devils). Due to the general anti-roleplaying sentiment at the time of release of 2nd edition, TSR made up the names you like to appease the fundamentalists - and the first edition players hated the new names. Now that the balance has swung more to the left the old names are back.

Not that I'd ever accuse TSR of a lot of originality in AD&D - type 6 demons anyone?
