  • Most Fun Melee! =)

Since I started EQ the only characters I had ever played were casters. For once I want to try out a pure Melee character. Problem is I can't decide which is the most fun.

So can yall help me out?

    Warrior
    Monk
    Rogue

I think thats all the pure Meleers.

I'm probably a bit biased, since I've only played one of the three, but ...

My main is a paladin, and my alts are (by level, highest first) magician, enchanter, bard, sk. Since they'd all been casters, I wanted to try my hand at a melee. Being a paladin, I didn't think I could stand being a warrior - too boring, and very similar but lacking a lot of the interest of a paladin (no spells). I'd known a lot of rogues, and they have a hard time soloing, and are always drooling over uber new weapons for backstab.

Monks, on the other hand, caught my interest. They have a number of special abilities (which helps avoid some of the pure melee monotony), and have decent hand-to-hand, meaning that even weaponless the monk would be alright (although far from stellar). When I started looking at the class and boards and such, people who did little monk alts generally were happy with them, describing them as fun little chars that didn't take much money or time, but still yielded a sense of success and accomplishment. I chose Iksar monk, for the added regen (as I figured I'd solo a lot, and bandages are expensive), forage (only the bard foraged previously, so would be nice to experiment with), innate AC (always handy), and because he starts in kunark - I'd always avoided the continent, so I figured this would be a good way to see it, from the eyes of a native :P

My monk is up to lvl 18 now, played him occasionally whenever the mood hit. Had been in quested Curscale armor, and then upgraded to Wu's in exchange for his farmed silk swatchs & threads. Got an polished steel ulak as a gift from a friend that was passing by, and a 1hb in trade for supplies. He's been a fun little char, messing around in Field of Bone and Kurn's Tower. I've been very happy with him

So anyhow, I'd recommend a monk :P More interesting things to do than a Warrior, more options and less weapon dependant than a rogue (while rogues have H&S, monks have FD-flopping :P)

I have a rogue, a warrior, and two monks (one of each race).

By far, I would recommend monk. They're very interesting characters.

Bard! Bards are hte life of the party, and so what if there's no party? Make one! No group will ever turn down a bard given the chance, and i fyou can't make one, be a group into yourself. A bard can hop on the bandwagon (no pun intended) and solo himself/herself when unable to find a group. Be warned however, bards take massive time, give worse Carpal Tunnel than making Mino Brews or MTP's, and are often expensive to equip considering hte wide range of stats we draw from.

The subject is melees. Bards are melees like Rangers are healers.

as you posted your question on a tradeskills board, i wonder if you're a tradeskills type of person?, in which case you may like to think about a gnome rogue, as that is i think the only race / class combination that can be in the 2250 club?

fun is relative to what you enjoy..

warriors can be fun if you think you might like to be right in there toe-to-toe with the nasty monster hurling abuse and taking the hits square on the chin..

rogues can be fun if you like being sneaky, un-noticed, poisoning, backstabbing, scouting, cr work, up close blast-gun style damage..

monks will be fun for you if you like the challenges of pulling, splitting mobs, fd scouting / cr work

warrior may lose it's fun if you're not in a position to be the main tank

rogue may lose it's fun if you dont like the idea of having to get to level 63 / 24aaxp points to buy back the hide & sneak skill that they should have... i'll stop here as i'm a little bitter on this subject atm :|

monks wont be fun if you dont want to learn how to pull, how to split mobs, etc.. a good monk player is a joy to watch but theres a lot of skill in the art

I made myself a Human Monk so I could explore different areas of the game. So far he's pretty fun. But sadly can't forage. =(

Still, very cool character that can handle himself combat. Trying to get him from Qeynos to Felwithe so I can do the Orc Belt quests. =)

Anyway I am going to make him a Tradeskiller so he can make his own food and drink without having to run out so fast (fish cakes.)

I've played a Monk AND a Warrior (but never a Rogue - Backstabbing doesn't appeal to me all that much), and I have to say I have more fun with my Monk alt than I've ever had with either of the 2 Warriors I've ran.

                You made a good choice.

I object. Without getting into a big debate here, Bards are excellent melee characters, and post 50, bards can produce more total melee dps associated with htem than warriors can. And, oddly enough, bards wear plate, so we are counted as melee. Besides, even with my paltry 1036 ac anf 2100 hp unbuffed, I still tank groups and/or fight, simply because I can stand toe to toe with the mobs in most lower planes and fork it over too. And, dont knock ranger healing, one has saved my ass before (Ok, I['m embarassed)

                    I'm an SK.

Am I an impure meleer, then?

Yea, but if you want to do something different, I'd recommend the SK as the best class. Why?

                        Good AC and HP.
                        FD
                        self invis
                        ITU
                        DA
                        Summon corpse

Basically, the best class for on the ground exploring. Invis past mobs! Invis dropped? Unlike our bretheren in dresses, we can survive to FD. You can always DA and sprint for a zone if it's close.

Downsides are no gating and no sow (plus you need to get to 30 for FD 51 for summon corpse and 52 for DA).

If want want to see the dungeons, SK is the class for you.

                          Psst, Kiztent:

He wants to try a *non-casting* class. Hence, the choices of rogue, monk, or warrior. No SK (and no bard) by these rules. I still say monk is the best of the bunch. =)
