  • Anti Virus/Pop up blocker

Can anyone suggest a good anit-virus and/or pop-up blocker? Im really sick of pop-up ads and just want the anti-virus as a safety precaution. Oh yeah, Id prefer if the programs were free, im a bit broke at the moment, hehe.

    POP UP Stopper

That's what my tech guy gave me and I swear by it. Works great for me. Only problem is a lot of Magelo profiles are stopped by it, but it's a small price to pay, I just toggel off and on for them.

      ?

I've never had magelo profiles stopped.

Did you forget to look at what key lets a link go ahead and get through?
You hold that key down then click on the link you want to go to.

There is another type of program that you might be interested in using as well. If you are getting a lot of pop-ups, you might want a program that kills spyware programs on your system. Spyware can be anything from a silent tracking program that logs what sites you go to or topics you search for to something that installs a program (like Gator) or changes your homepage without you requesting the change. Anti-Virus programs don't usually catch these things since they do not usually hard your system, just your enjoyment. If you use a program like Kazaa or Bearshear or any other P2P download program, you'll want a spyware killer (I use Kazaa and every 3 days I run my spyware killer; I ALWAYS have at least 6 tracker programs it finds.) Some Spyware killers will also point out possible security risks on your system. The one I like to use is free (though a donation is asked for if you like it and can make a donation). It's calledSpybot - Search & Destroy

I installed Ad-Aware a few months back and run it about once a week. It never surprises me how many things it catches... and i take a bit of sadistic pleasure nuking them off my drive.

Ok, so it's called Firebird now. /shrug
(click that link, then 'nightly binaries' and then find one for your system.)

It's a browser that, to me, is a cross between netscape and MS Internet Explorer. A couple of times I have to go manually download a certain plugin, but it's painless.

I can't remember the last time I saw an unwanted pop-up.

My BF showed me this, I disbelieved. But it's true. True true true true. It does not block Magelo popups, nor anything that you ask to pop up (a link you click that requires a box to pop up, etc). BEST OF ALL, it uses 'tabs', so I can have, say, my EQtraders window, with many tabs open of many different pages on the site and the forum, and then my comics window, with many different comics open (I'm addicted to them, what can I say? ^_^), and then a misc window, if I want anything else and don't want it grouped with EQTC or my comics.

About the virus stuff, not sure there. But Phoenix has changed the way I browse the web. I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I can't say how much I love it.
