  • Vehicular Advice

    My fiance recently moved out and I have decided to get a jumpstart on my mid-life crisis. Pursuant to that I jave decided to fill up her now vacant parking spot with something big and gaudy. My summer/fair weather car is a nice BMW convertible but I need something for the winter that has some decent cargo space (I own a gourmet ice cream shop and many times need to pick up supplies on the fly).

    Currently I am considering:
    1) Hummer H2 or H3
    2) Dodge Durango
    3) Jeep Liberty
    4) Something else?

    Needs to be 4wd capable, decent storage capacity, automatic.

    Anyone with experience with these vehicles or ones like them or that have recommendations?

    Dodge Durango for the win...H2/H3..I personally would keep clear of. Jeep Liberty another good choice though Jeep is not really a primary of the Conglomerate makeing it...as to OTHER if I had the money I would look to Range Rover.

      When I lived overseas, the universal choice for going out into the desert and "wadi bashing" (going up and down the dunes at extreme speeds or angles) was the Toyota Land Cruiser, with a Nissan vehicle (Pathfinder? not sure) as a make-do second choice. The Land Cruiser was also the SUV of choice for city driving; the Lexus SUV is a variant of the Land Cruiser with a more luxurious fit and finish.

        Forget the H2/3 waste of money. If you really want a Hummer, just hit a government auction you can pick up a used (Military) Hummer for under $5k. I got one when i was in Haiti cost me $1150.00 for the vehicle and the shipping back to the US. they have some really nice 'luxury' Hummer that the Generals get to drive around in.

        I currently have a Jeep Grand Cherroke, i love it, and am looking at the updated Willies they have out now (Compass i think its called).

          Im not really much of a ford fan myself.

          Cars you might wanna check out are the Land rover LR3
          and the Mercedes-Benz GL450

          tough you might wanna look into some pickups. I know Toyota and ford are the big dogs on the pickup market so maybe getting a catalouge from each and checking if they meet your fancy would be one idea.

          tough personally the way things are going now Id maybe be so bold as to look at some station wagons. Better fule econemy. And some of the newer models aint half bad for what you seem to be aiming for its use.

            Honda Element

            You might consider the Honda Element. It's an automatic with 4wd. Yes it's a box, but it has lots of viewing room, 20-25 MPG and adjustable seats that can actually be configured so two can sleep or camp in it.

            I managed an ice cream shop, and most of the inventory contained either sugar, milk or chocolate in some combination, and spills were a pain to clean (even on those tile floors that showed every friggin speck of dirt ...but I digress. ) Maybe most importantly - it has a polymer interior floor that is flexible and can actually be washed in the event your cargo melts, spills or gets ripped into by a child/dog/gang-of-women-with-7-month-cravings.

            I can say that last part because I watched my otherwise sane sister effectively devour a bag of chocolate chips and vanilla ice cream (yes she mixed them) before we could get her home from the store!

              kinda why I say he should go for a pickup.
              tough by the sound of his post sounds like he really interested in a big flashy SUV.

                I've heard (no first hand experience) that the H2/H3s have a very small interior space given the outside space that they take up. If I personally had the cash to throw around, I'd either go for an off the lot Range Rover, or a rebuilt oldschool Land Cruiser or Range Rover (I'd probably go the rebuilt route cause I think there are too many flashy pointless things included in new cars today, and I'm a bit sentimental about older stuff - Plus Cruisers just rock ). Whatever you pick, just make sure you get a local opinion on it, and good luck with your new car.

                      I like my GMC ENVOY. May be a tad smaller than you are looking for tho.

                      GMC = Envoy
                      CHEVY = Trailblazer

                      Envoy replaced the Jimmy
                      Trailblazer replaced the Blazer.
