If I click one the ads at the top of the boards, does that generate more revenue for the site?

Typically they only generate income if someone buy's something. There are a few exceptions to that rule, but dont see why these ads would be an aception to it.

What I think this forum needs is in the donation part, donate to make it ad free. For that I would gladly pay.

I started clicking on them anyway. Hopefully, that will help add a few coppers here and there.

It is per click, with some algorithm in there to prevent someone spending all day clicking ads to bloat revenue. I am not sure where the cutoff on "clicks per IP" or "per x time" is. It is not information that they share with us

Ask and you shall receive. Actually, getting rid of the ads isn't an option, unfortunately. We used to be ad-free but donations didn't cover the costs for hosting and whatnot. As it is the ads only barely cover things.

Then I'll click them periodically to help bump up the clicks. If everyone clicks, then we'll be a nice clique of clicking clickers.

Wow I didn't know that they actually keep track of the clicks. I will have to start clicking more often

Actually it is very easy to make a ad free web site/forum for those who donate. All you gotta do is clone the web site so it is duplicated, give it a different IP/Web address and upon logging in it directs you to the ad free page(s). It is a heavily common practice, many people pay to have the sites they visit ad free. Anandtech did it for a very long time. Thier user database and web traffic is high enough to swallow this site 100 times over. People would pay $2/mo for visiting that site ad free. Thier user database is ~150000. Even if you figure in mere .5% of the users paying $2/mo for ad free site visitation. It equated to $1500 net income per month.
It should be noted they quit doing the pay for ad free. Simply cause thier net income from people clicking the ads generated them more income, simply from the size of users. So going ad free subscribing actually "costed" them more cause less people would click.
