      Oh dear bright lord Agnostic....

      Basicly it's a bug.

      (You knew that.)

Basicly .... there's not a FIX for it.

EDIT: Almost forgot. Patch ONLY WHAT YOU NEED TO, and IN SMALL BITS, if you are having this problem.

That means when the patcher starts click CANCEL to cancel the auto-download. Then let it check for files. Then go to "advanced" and unselect everything but ONE era. Patch. Select another era. Patch. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Yes, it's horribly annoying. And yes if you want you can edit the proper xml file in your EQ directory so that you don't actually HAVE to do it by hand inside the patcher and wait for the "cancel, check, advanced, new era select, re-patch" hassle. I don't feel comfortable giving blanket xml advice in open forum. Private message me for the file name.

      END EDIT

Run the patch. Let the error occur.

Here you have two schools of thought....

School 1 - Let the computer run a VERY long time after this error "kills" the download. (It, in fact, continues, but appears to all user efforts to be dead.)

School 2 - Hard reboot your machine. (Usually getting this error causes a complete lockup of the operating system.)

I've gone School 2 several times. I'm not entirely convinced this hasn't been a factor in 4 hard drive crashes, and a full replacement of a hard drive, and 2 complete Operating System re-installs in the last 18 months.

So I'd -strongly- advise that you just let the computer RUN for several hours before rebooting.

At some point you WILL HAVE TO hard reboot. Do so.

      Re-run the patch.

Lather-rinse-repeat until one of four things happens.

      1) EQ successfully finishes the patch and you can log in. (Happens most often.)

      2) Your hard drive or OS melts down and you have to re-install hardware or software. (4 times in 18 months, but EQ is only a serious suspect in 3 of those events.)

      3) Your eyeballs melt, your ears bleed or you suffer some other hospitalizing illness related to the sudden increase in blood pressure. (So far I've managed to avoid this, frequently by staying logged out of the game for months, using school pressure as an excuse to not play, and patching problems as an excuse not to fry my computer mid-semester.)

      4) Someone at SOE Tech Support posts a reply to one of the _over_100_ threads dealing with this error which includes a method for avoiding it ever happening again. (None of the replies is helpful, they all amount to "we can't reproduce the problem and if you reboot/re-patch enough you will either succeed or cancel your account, so we don't feel the need to develop a solution.")
In My (Not Always) Humble Opinion, except where I quote someone. If I don't know I say so.
I suck at this game, your mileage WILL vary. My path is probably NON-optimal.
